    Special Edition of Cayman S

    Hi all
    PAG announced the launch of a Special Edition of the Cayman S today:

    Not sure whether this Edition (limited production number 777) will be available on all markets (only Germany and US are mentioned) .

    Unfortunately it seems to be a pure marketing-gimmick (just like the orange Boxster sold as a "Special Edition" in the US recently) as I couldn't notice any tech changes/improvements

    Instead the car comes with an "elegant briefcase"

    They need as many marketing gimmick as they can come up with . They need to sale the cars. I had never seen Porsche coming up with so many special edition models in one year .

    Mind you PAG calls this Cayman "Design Edition 1" I'm sure "Design Edition 2" will follow soon

    I believe either sales are a bit low or they want to shift all the existing cars before the facelift comes out.(Suppliers have already delivered lights and other old panels hence this has to be shifted one way or the other.)

    No, the Boxster "Orange" isn't on sale yet.

    As special editions go its quite smart. Its just that special editions have the whiff of chintz.

    If/when they bring out a club sport/RS/whatever I hope there are alcantara bits are like this.

    As much as I agree with you, PJ, I have to say that this is one of the better examples of an edition with special trim, no matter from Porsche or any other manufacturer. Well, let's save these horrible decals that looks like a promo gadget for slow-selling dealerships!

    It shows how far the current car can be altered with extensive use of the available options from Tequipment and Exclusive. One might discuss if there is any demand for such a car, anyhow there have been worse examples of special editons on the market so far.

    I hate the decals, but the rest of the car is awesome! Love the alcantra, and the sinister look. Is it much more expensive than a "normal" cayman S?

    in holland the special ed. model costs 96.000 euro standard with p.a.s.m ,turbo wheels ,leather seats with crests and leather on instr.panel and mid console and also black piano paint on mid console compaired to base model S euro 82.550 and i almost forgot a black leather attache suitcase

    I like the car very much, but I think that it is a poor excersize in parts bin emptying.

    Facelift should be coming in a year or two and these special editions never end up being what they promise to be, ie, special.

    They never quite hold their value for the premium. Look at what happened with the 40th anniversary 996. nearly 25k discounts because it was overpriced and not really that special.

    Looks great but it makes an overpriced car even less competitive, IMO.

    in holland with taxes 96.000 euro is approx. 129.908,42 dollars!!!

    Porsche sells much less than the hoped for 10,000 Caymans per yer, more like 7,000 or so. Therefore 777 would be like 1 out of 10 --- not so exclusive.

    What the Cayman needs is a bigger engine, limited slip differential, and normal (non-crippled) gearing. And what does high and mighty Porsche AG give us? Black paint and leather. Porsche AG has got to be the most arrogant, least responsive, company in the world.

    Not true - they sold 6,561 Cayman alone in the US in the recent FY. In the first half of FY 06/07 they sold 7,687 Cayman world-wide, so it's an easy bet that they have reached > 10,000 units in the FY ended 31 July 07.

    Available here in the UK as well - must be "777" for each market, so not quite as exclusive as Porsche would have one believe

    777 is the total worldwide production run. I've got a copy of the UK dealer memo on the car

    At the end of May 07 ie 10 month into their fiscal year 06/07, Porsche sold 13,586 Cayman.

    Bottom line for the fiscal year ended on July 31st 07, they should have sold around 17,700 Cayman.

    So 777 out of 17,700 is around 4.4% which is not super exclusive but not mass either.

    FYI during FY 06/07 (Aug 06-July 07), Porsche sold in North America (US + CAN) 6,561 Cayman (2,700 regular and 3,861 S)

    And for your information, high and mighty Porsche AG only sold 7025 Caymans in NA in 2006. And, sales are so bad now, they're lowering production, and, the dealers are giving hefty discounts off the over-inflated MSRP, and, some used 2006 former $70,000 Cayman S are selling in the $40,000-$50,000 range.

    And, for 2007, only 3691 Caymans, both the crippled S model and the even more crippled base non-S model combined, have been sold in the US. This is a far cry from 10,000. Get your numbers straight!

    I'm referring to Porsche's FISCAL year from Aug 1 to July 31 and not to CALENDAR year (Jan 1 to Dec 31)

    Cayman S: 5,865 (introduced in Feb 06)

    CALENDAR 07 USA (YTD: Until July 31 or 7 month)
    Cayman: 1,649
    Cayman S: 2,042
    TOTAL 3,691

    FISCAL 05/06 (Aug 05 - July 06) USA
    Cayman: 194 (1 month only)
    Cayman S: 4,178 (jan-july only)
    TOTAL: 4,372

    FISCAL 06/07 (Aug 06 - July 07) USA
    Cayman: 2,615
    Cayman S: 3,729
    TOTAL: 6,344

    FISCAL 05-06 WORLD sales
    Cayman: 1,134
    Cayman S: 12,868
    TOTAL: 14,002

    FISCAL 06-07 10 month WORLD sales
    Cayman + Cayman S: 13,586

    My own estimate is calling for WORLD sales of around 17,700 units for FY 06-07

    Regarding production, the issue is not on the Cayman BUT on the Boxster. After 10 month, Boxster sales (world) were down 23%....

    My numbers are Porsche's official numbers ... sorry
