Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

Another "lukewarm" first drive, I don't know if they all had too high expetations. The main critisism amongst the reviews seems to be the steering.
    http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/coupes/0707_2008_bmw_m3/

    This sounds promising though:
    Quote:
Mash the loud pedal, and the quiet V-8 turns into a screaming demon. Thrust builds gradually until 3900 rpm (the torque peak), but never falls off. In fact, the engine's note becomes more and more hysterical as the tach swings clockwise. From 6000 to the 8400-rpm rev limiter, it sounds angrier and more ferocious than any V-8 you've ever heard this side of Maranello. The soundtrack is nothing short of magic.

As always Automobile Mag provides some really nice pictures of the car in wallpaper sizes, here's my favourite:

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

A friend of mine has had one on order for quite some time, in fact he was second on the list. 1st was a guy who has ordered a convertible and as the convertible usually comes after the coupe in terms of production this therefore pushed mates order first.

However, he called in last week to wonder why he had not been called to spec the car and found out he'd been pushed back to 16th on the list and wouldn't get his car for quite some time. (think he said late 2008). Anyway, he went mental and to be honest I agree with him. This obvious preferential treatment some people get is all wrong it really is. I guess this happens a lot as I know it happened recently with the Audi R8. Anyway, most of the reviews have been "luke warm" as you say and have also indicated there has been deliberate massaging of the M3's performance to make the insertion of another incarnation of the M3 easy, in steps the CSL. So, he's basically said no to the new M3 and will wait to see what happens with the potentially coming CSL. What the M3 should have been.

What was interesting though is that there is some discussion over the current 335i. If you take a Pounds30k standard 335, send it to Hartge and spend Pounds10k, you'll end up with a Pounds40k 335i which has 380bhp and quite possibly as good and involved drive as the M3 without the Pounds55k price tag. Apparently, if you buy with your head this time round the 335 becomes viable, albeit not with the kudos of an M3, but if you buy with your heart you'll get a luke warm M3. Tough decision I think for all these people with high expectations (and rightly so) and an M3 on order. Kind of disappointing.

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

Speaking of the 335i, does anyone have the new coupe? It looks very attractive and I'm looking for a daily driver. Any comments?

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

The 335i is a very quick car. Get it.

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

Yes, it's a great car. Just don't tune it as it will start overheating at high speed.

I think a big aftermarket oil cooler might solve that...

I got mine a few days ago, black coupe with paddle shifters.
Had to call every dealer within 100 miles to find one that was not presold. I bought it as a daily driver to replace my boxster.
The 335 coupe is a great car, very confortable and fast probably as fast as a Cayman S for much less money, 4 real seats and tons of gadgets. Glad I did the switch and recommend it to everyone although they seem to be very hard to find even here in socal.

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

    Congrats!!! very nice .

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

Guys , am I missing something here or what ?? , because just for a piddly small 3.5 k more (gbp) you can get an Audi S5 which is quicker than the 335 (correct?) , its also a great daily driver too . Plus you have that V8 rumble ..

Dont get me wrong , the 335 is awesome too..

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

Make that 4k more , just checked..But it comes out a bit quicker 0-60 wise , dont know about the roll on's though..

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

Perhaps if S5 was available in the U.S. he would have test driven it for comparison but A5/S5 won't be available till almost Christmas time or early Jan. '08.

You either forgot or don't know that for about 1k$, the 335 can be made to kick the s--- of any Audi (save the R8) and don't get me wrong I like Audis, I have one...
Plus when I need to go really fast I have something else to use...

Re: Automobile Mag: BMW M3 first drive

    Ron and AAHTT ,,

Thanks for the info , but , surely that small 1k$ upgrade (chip I gather ) will void the warranty though ??..

yes probably, but it is a piggy bag add-on and can be reversed. I have also checked the pricing of the S5 here in the US and it seems the MSRP is going to be 62k$ vs 42k$ for the 335, that's a huge difference. Also the 0-60 and 1/4 mile for S5 is exactly the same as a stock 335 (about 4.9 and 13.4s@ 104mph), so no performance improvement for the additional 20k$.

"carreraman" these are some pictures as requested:

The 335i is a very quick car, at least on paper. According to M3 post the new M3 is only 0.1 sec faster from 80-120 kph in 4th gear (5.2 vs 5.3 sec) and the 335i is also only 0.1 sec slower than a 997 Carrera S from 80-120 kph in 5th gear - talk about mid-range grunt

Here in Norway, with our insane car prices, it is by far the best value for money for a "performance" car. The Audi S5 is for example 35k euro/50k USD more expensive

    Thanks for the pics!
