    GT3 Englne Noise

    First niggle about my new GT3:

    After all the praise I'd heard concerning the GT3 motor's lovely sound, I am a little disappointed to hear--along with a throaty exhaust note--the sound of metal vibration, as if some nuts and bolts aren't fully tightened. This noise rises and falls with the engine rpm. The noise almost sounds like a bad transaxle or, again, something not tightened down properly in the engine compartment.

    Anybody have this same experience? If so, what am I hearing? If I understood, maybe the noise wouldn't bother me so much.

    Take it back to the dealer. Get a tech to take a drive with you. Rattles and vibrations of a certain nature are not natural. Porsche engineers spends mucho dinero engineering that crap out of NVH.

    Is this the first time you have heard a GT3 engine? I seem to remember you saying there weren't many/any other GT3s on Hawaai.

    If so, you may be suffering from culture shock. It is an uncompromising, highly-tuned engine intended for max performance and not for a smooth, quiet idle. It's like a thoroughbred horse with the bit in its teeth, stomping the ground with its hooves and just waiting for the start. The noises you have noticed may be normal for the GT3. Hard to tell from your description.

    If on the other hand you have heard a GT3 engine before and yours sounds different, then you should take it back to your dealer for a checkup.

    Of the GT3's I've heard, all of them have this harsh, metallic noise to them. Other people, including a Porsche salesman, said that it sounds like that too.

    I mean if it does sound bad, definitely go bring it back and see what they say.

    mine sounds like the movies. not sure what is going on with yours. ask the dealer.

    My service tech says the noises are normal. The service mgr. explains that this is a race car with less noise-deadening than regular Porsches. Plus, the engine is different, the suspension, etc. He said I will hear a few creaks and groans now and then, due to the lack of padding in the car.

    Mine at idle is rough, which can be felt through the car, and people outside have commented that it rumbles and sputters but is nice. Under throttle though it is SWEET!

    On a different note mine yesterday on start up made an odd mechanical noise like someone tapping on the engine with a hammer. It quickly stopped once the car started. I have read this may be the tensioner on the timing chain, or something like that.

    I've had something like this happen on several Porsche flat six motors, especially when the engine sits for a while. The oil drains down and takes a while to get back where it needs to be, so you get this ungodly sound, but then it goes away.

    Yup it used to occur on the 996 series, hydraulic tapits waiting for oil at the top end as the circulation started, but unlikely on the GT3 with fully dry sumped lubrication!

    It actually happens more commonly on the GT3 (not sure if all valve noise though). Dry sump doesn't affect cold start oil supply...

    Mine sometimes makes that hammer like sound on startup too as well as other metal on metal sounds for a second or two. Don't know why it should be different than my 996 TT which has the same basic engine design but I'm no expert.
    Definetely doesn't sound right but my mechanic says it's ok.
    When i bring it in for the after break in oil change I'm going to leave it so he can hear it on cold start the next morning.

    My 996 GT2 made sounds like this as well... Its normal as far as I know...The LSD etc makes these and I think Porsche made these sounds more audible on purpose...

    I was under the impression that this was 996 characteristic specifically & didn't affect the 997?
    Also I thought the new 997GT3 had a vacuum created within the crankcase for improved flow (including first start)& two pairs of oil pumps located in the cylinder heads (plus one in the crankcase)that pre-load on first electric key turn ensuring faster oil supply on first start?
    I have certainly not had any hydraulic tappet noise on first start from my 997GT3 but had it all the time on a previous 996 facelift!

    You could be right - my knowledge was based on 996 GT3 and assumed 997 GT3 was similar...
