Perhaps the Turbo S is the fast street car when the 918 is being "serviced" (read dismantled)

It does not hurt to have options..

I had always wanted to have another Turbo S, even if they don't release the Exclusive Series car I will likely buy the regular one.

Turbo S is not the most powerful, fastest, best handling, best looking etc but it's the best all-around all year daily sports car. Everything about it is good enough.

Another mistake like selling the Speciale Smiley. You really should reconsider, it would be a worthy addition to the fleet.m

Haha yeah don't remind me of the Speciale Smiley

But my priorities have changed, after the 918, nothing else that go super fast attracts my attention anymore. If I want a fast street car. I will just take out the 918. Plus I already have a GT2RS coming, which a 720S will have no hope of catching on track.

But even then my ClubSport is faster still on track, and I have my eyes set on a Cup car, even faster.

Great news Nick!Smiley Please do it before April....Smiley And you need it in order to get close to Dean. Or mabye you need a F1 for that..?!Smiley

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

Amazing given that the 720S could only manage the 4th fastest lap time at the Road & Track lapping at the NCM Track.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

Keep in mind the 720S was on Corsas while the others were on Trofeos and Cup2. Huge difference in tires. That's how the GTR was able to put down that time. The Performante on Trofeos was only a couple tenths quicker, and it's intended to be an aggressive/track-oriented model.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

As you will see from forthcoming 720S Sport Auto Test Hockenheim Klein Kurs lap time on Corsas is nothing special. Car is slower then 991.2 Turbo S on same Corsas. Regarding Ring time on Trofeo R again nothing to write about. Especially when you consider it has 720hp. Also, Lack of LSD(or some intelligent e-diff) is putting considerable amount of stress to its rear brakes. Suspension is rather good on flat tracks, but not so good on the ones with some elevations.

720S is a straight line monster. On the track, even with Trofeos it is nothing to write about.

Or instead of a straight line (only) monster, you could consider it a comfortable GT with huge performance, why would everything need to be able to post ridiculous laptimes? It's not supposed to be a track car... I struggle to understand the difficulties some here have to write anything positive about McLaren, we're not at war with them... Smiley

    Frank,

I agree with you. 720S is fantastically fast car and I like it a lot. No competition on the autobahn. But, it is not the last word on the tracks. I was simply reacting to noon1 claims about 720S track potential on Trofeo tires.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

I think it great that McLaren did not make their road car compromised just to get faster track time. I could not care less about them, more important is the fun and relative performance in the real world. For track junkies, you can get a real track car, it will be faster and safer. To me it makes no sense to trash around a $250k road car and up at the track when you can have more fun in a clubsport.

+1 . Also there will be a 720 LT for the track in due course I suspect.

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

So far the lap times indicate the 720s is among the fastest you can buy on a track. People have been talking to the Performance ring time, yet the 720a just matched it on Corsas in the latest test. It was within a few tenths. On trofeos it would obviously be quicker.

Unless you're saying trofeos make no difference...

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

Markus, I have to ask why?

720S is clearly the fastest sportscar on the autobahn. Lack of real LSD or e-diff, narrow tires and suspension mainly tuned for road use are a handicap on the track.

The turbo s is also tuned for road use... Also, the 720s is brand new, one should expect it to outperform the „old“ turbo by far...

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    Think of it this way:

The test just posted shows the 720S on Corsas a couple tenths behind the Performante, but it was on Corsas while the Lamborghini was on Trofeos. The GTR was of course on those insane Cup2s. When McLaren put Trofeos on the P1, it gained 1.4s on a 1:12 lap.

So needless to say, the 720S would have no doubt gained a fair amount of time, making it ahead of the Performante and very close or maybe even ahead of that GTR on those crazy Cup2.

The 720S did 7:14 on Corsas with HvS. They said it would go even quicker if they had more time with it. HvS did 7:13 in a 918. If we assume Gebhardt is quicker than HvS, which most seem to think, you can cut a few seconds off that 7:13. Put on Trofeo R and cut probably another 7-10s off that time. Now it's a 7 min or less car on the NR. Remember, Marc Leib did 6:57 in a 918 and HvS was only able to do 7:13.

They haven't released it yet, but an American magazine just had Randy Pobst test it and it did 1:21.7 apparently. For reference, these are what other cars did on that lap. So they'll release this test soon, along with the Ford GT lap time there as well. If it did do 1:21.7, that in very, very quick for what is essentially a every-day super car. It would only be half a second slower than Dodge's factory/pro driver in a very compromised Viper that's more or less fully adjustable and set up for every track they took it to, and who probably has done hundreds of laps in the car.

    1. Dodge Viper ACR (Mk V) Chris Winkler 1:21.24
    2. Porsche 918 Spyder Randy Pobst 1:23.54
    3. McLaren 675LT Randy Pobst 1:24.29
    4. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (C7) Randy Pobst 1:25.00
    5. Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 Randy Pobst 1:25.17
    6. Aventador LP750-4 SV Randy Pobst 1:25.42
    7. Nissan GT-R Nismo (R35) Randy Pobst 1:25.70
    8. McLaren 650 S Spider Randy Pobst 1:25.88
    9. Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR Dominik Farnbacher 1:26.00
    10. Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (Mk VI) unknown 1:26.16

Re: McLaren on a winning streak

To be honest: I couldn't care less if a car is a second faster on a track or not. In the hands of amateur drivers, these cars behave completely different because non-professional drivers have their own preferences and weak (driving skills) points. I prefer AWD cars and I do real magic in them, others are at least as fast in a similar RWD car and so on, it really depends...

Bottom line is: I care more about the emotional part of the drive because in the end, these super sportscars are very similar in (track) performance and let's be honest, most of us are not that often on the track that a second or a fraction of a second really matters.

What I do not like about the 720S is simple: The sound (exhaust/engine) and the fact that there aren't many dealerships in Germany/Europe. As a potential customer, this wouldn't really bother me. I like McLaren but unless they make me an offer I cannot refuse (similar to my R8 indecision), I wouldn't go for one. A weekend toy car is not something I can afford paying big bucks for, sorry but whoever has the financial means to get a 720S, should do it. Very nice offer from McLaren and if you don't care about all those carbon/whatever options, you can basically get a hypercar for 250k EUR, which is a great offer, especially in comparison with the competition.

New Supertest 720 S today in German Auto Bild Sportcars (measured without co-driver)

    0-100 kph: 2.7 s
    0-200 kph : 7.2 s
    0-300 kph: 19.4 s

Race course Sachsenring : 1:29,46 min with Pirelli Corsa, not Trofeo, which is likely faster.

Supertest 488 GTB in same magazine with Michelin Cup 2:

    0-100: 2.8 s
    0-200 : 8.4 s
    0-300 : 23.9 s

    Sachenring: 1:30,99 min

    ( Porsche Turbo S Exclusive 607 PS: 1:31,23)

Very euphoric test of 720 S in Autobild Sport Cars, no weakpoints mentioned.
All is better than at 675 LT or 650 S.
720 S is currently one of fastest serial cars ( longitudinal) you can buy for money and
    also convincing on race tracks.

For me up to kow, I have no regrets having bought 720 S. May be I will sell my 488.

So yea, I think we can say that the 720S is definitely a monster on the track too, even with Corsas.
