    What is this thing called LSD?

    I know what it DOES, just curious to know what it IS. Presumably it's not a discrete extra box in the driveline, where would such a thing go? I assume it's a couple of extra cogs or similar components inside the 6 sp. gearbox/rear wheel drive assembly. It can't be much more than that considering it's relatively cheap price, can it?

    basically the advantage of having LSD on your rear axle is to help your car get more traction when coming out of a corner, more grip onto the road surface...

    It does and this is the finest type of LSD available. They are friction discs really (not like the clutch you think of controlled by your left foot).

    LSD's which do not use clutches (Quaife and other Torque Biasing Diffs) do not provide the stability under braking and corner entry that is provided by a real clutch type LSD. 997S with -20mm Sports Suspension, Carrera GT, GT2 and GT3 also use Clutch-type LSD's.

    Another thing? LSD is only us$1K BUT it's just another thing that can go wrong and maybe cost alot more than us$1k to fix. This aligned with the fact that you don't really need it except on a track (or in snow?) is another drawback.

    When resale time comes LSD will make alot of buyers perk up.

    Complicated decision, huh? I mean it doesn't do much, adds extra weight (?), can fail, not needed for the road, needed for resale. I'm _definitely_ ordering it (no kidding).

    I was told by a porsche test driver that unless you are tracking the car it is pretty useless.Has no impact on resale value here in the uk,you see very few specced with it.

    A differential is usually a use-and-forget part. I imagine a clutch(es) equipped LSD will require maintenance.

    Cross cultural confusion alert! In Australia this means a lot of buyers will vomit when they learn the car has LSD. Is this what you meant?!

    Yes, clutch discs do wear out over the years. On a 911 (significant rear weight bias) the benefits under braking and corner entry far out-weigh the disadvantage of it having a very infrequent service requirement, imho.

    This is why Porsche has never equipped any 911, nor any other high performance Porsche sportscar model with anything but clutch-type LSD's (when equipped with an LSD at all).

    Would be great to have the perfomance of a clutch LSD with the maintenance requirements of a Quaife (none), but that doesn't exist just yet

    So lemme ask this:

    When you fly into a corner what would you feel in an LSD-equipped car versus a non-LSD equipped car?

    Does it have a perceptible sensation or effect at..., say..., 50mph? Or is the effect, if any, only evident at far greater speeds?

    It's very evident at low speeds. With LSD you would have much more stability under very hard braking (no tail wag at all, even on uneven surface) and the car would not have as much of a tendency to want to spin if you braked all the way into the first part of the corner (trail braking). The car would be more responsive to throttle inputs while cornering (throttle steering) and the car would hook up and accelerate strongly without wheelspin (unless enough torque to make both rears spin) out of the corner.

    It is generally advisable to use a stiffer rear swabar with LSD to counteract the additional understeer which can be introduced with LSD as well...

    Must admit I did have a chuck(le) when I read your post! Not sure of the origins but you could be right! I've got LSD coming in my TT for October delivery. I figured if I could afford such craziness as leather on the PCM, the least I could do was spend a few bucks on a couple of performance options.

    Having said that I'm not sure that I'll ever know whether Porsche actually put it in the car or not!

    I think it comes from the animal world. An aninimal will "perk" its ears to listen more closely to a new situation.

    One LSD will help you fly while staying on a narrow race track, the other will make you think you can fly anywhere.
