Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits?

I have a bad approach angle on the garage I use.

I'm wondering: what happens when the lip hits the pavement?

What happens when you encounter these difficult approaches like construction sites, ferry ramps, dirt roads, speed bumps, loading docks, garage lifts? Does the thing rip off and break? Is dismemberment a 90% probability or a 5% prob.?

Funny how my/our horror, pain and embarrasment will become everybody else's entertainment and joy.

usually it causes a reflexive blurb of expletives followed by a wave of nausea and anxiety

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits?

don't worry. it flexes and you will be safe...

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits?

even with the best of approach, etc intentions your gonna scrape it at some point...it seems to have decent flex to the point of not destructing in every day type events and at a couple of hundred bucks cheap enought to replace...i think that was the idea

If you don't get enjoyment from bad stuff happening to people why think others feel that way? Seeing bad stuff like spoiler's coming off doesn't make everyone happy, I guess I'm one of the few that always genuienly feels badly for bad stuff like that when it happens to other people....Firm believer good things happen to good people and bad stuff/karma if it goes round it comes round.

To answer your question - It all depends how badly the spoiler gets smacked. For it to comes off would take a very big blow, it usually just gets scraped/scartched up.

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits?

If it's painted, the paint can sometimes come off in larger flakes. I'm still toying with a painted front lip if I go with a white car, but I'm worried about the lip getting destroyed with daily driving.

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits

Sorry to get so exacting here but:

When the lip hits a ramp and the car still goes forward what happens?

Where does that deflected energy get absorbed? Does the front spoiler distort along with the lip?

Does the whole thing just bend upward effecting the seam between the trunk lid and "bumper?"

Does the front suspension ride up (i.e. the struts extend more) to obtain the extra room needed?

How does it go from an absorbed impact with maybe a few scratches to a totally ripped off piece of the car?

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits

If it hits hard enough it will break away, don't worry I've hit plenty of stuff, just a little curb rash on the bottom side. Nothing a razor won't fix.

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits

With a ramp as an example, first the bottom get scratched, go higher the lip flexes and deflect inward at the seam between the lip and the front bumper, that lip is soft plastic and will not hold the weight of the front of the car, so the struts will not go up.

Higher still or the impact is severe enough, the whole lip would probably break away at the clips in front to create the clearance. The lip might also break away at the 2 screw in points at the rear of the lip in the front fender if hit harder still.

If the above is still not creating enough clearance, the lower edge of the front bumper will take the 'hit', it's still soft plastic, but harder than the lip, but I do not believe it too has the strength to lift the front of the car.

The lip is a pretty robust piece, it can take a pretty good beating and stay connected, you hae to either hit something really harder or really high in order to break it off.

Regardless, the flexing from daily driving will cause the paint on a painted lip to flak off, it's only a question of when.

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits

Usually it scratches a bit, it will distort to save your bumper.

After a few nicks it becomes less attached to the front and sometimes flies off at high speeds...

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits

MMD don't worry about the front lip, it can take a lot of abuse and just flex and bend. I have a bit of a steep driveway myself and I scrape a little exiting and entering. Of course your not going to have that painted...that goes without saying for reasons too obvious to mention. We just have to deal with our own unique situations and make the best of it. Don't worry that part is not only replacable it will take a lot of abuse before you get to that point. Every month or so I take 80 grit sandpaper and sand the bottom edge smooth (otherwise it gets that chewed up stringy look to it). Did you pull the trigger yet??

Yeah I "hate" that look. I'm glad sandpaper fixes it. Will put some in my wallet.

Re: Lip on front bumper: what happens when it hits

Ya I feel like a dork, but at least I got the first front diffuser scrape out of the way: pulling out of my dealer's parking lot with about 50 people watching (there was a Volkswagen meeting) I had the pleasure of grinding away even though I took it slow and at an angle. Better get used to it and order a few spares.
