997 TT Tip S vs Manual( old topic revisited)?

My first Porsche was a manual C4S. My second a Tip S C4S. I agreed to a Tip on the second C4S because my wife is extremely apprehensive about learning to drive a stick. At first I was absolutely bummed with the Tip. However, with time I have learned to manipulate the programming with down shifting and judicious use of my right foot. It's better than I would have expected and definitely a plus in traffic. So I would like to poll the board. Given the choice and knowing that the car will be a daily driver, who would opt for:
    A) Manual six speed
    B) Tiptronic S

I'm getting close to purchase so I can really use some advice from those who know. And BTW, not that I want to start another thread but I still find it awkward hat you can't test drive Porsches' prior to buying unless you have some well equipped friends or happen to be a personal friend of the GM!

Re: 997 TT Tip S vs Manual( old topic revisited)?

Is it possible to purchase what you really want (the manual) and just tell your wife that she can't drive it? That's what I tell my wife.

Re: 997 TT Tip S vs Manual( old topic revisited)?

Sure, but at this point I'm a little torn. Per Porsche the Tip out performs the manual. Besides as a matter of practicality it would be helpful if my wife could drive the turbo if necessary.

I never told my wife these things come in automatic until after the fact. she tried to drive my manual once and did not like it and never asked again.
Get the manual and get your wife something else, that's what I did.

Re: 997 TT Tip S vs Manual( old topic revisited)

I'm glad I don't have to choose between the two because my car will be a weekend amusement ride (I'm getting a manual).

BUT, I _DID_ read that the Tip is better for managing the Tq of the Turbo off the line.

IOW, you just smash the gas pedal down and the thing rockets to 60 in 3.4 secs.

It would take a _practiced_ driver to get the advertised 3.7 out of the manual.

Soooooo: don't feel bad about getting a Tip: YOU WILL BE FASTER THAN 100% of other drivers with manuals. Probably faster than 99.999% of all cars on the road.

Another thing? When PDK comes available I would not hesitate to get it over manual. Tip is almost just as good.

Come to think of it, I would looooove to have a "good excuse" to get a Tip.

The difference between manual and tip is 0.6 seconds. 0-60mph or 0-100mph. Is that worth choosing an automatic over a manual? Not for me. I would choose the manual.

Re: 997 TT Tip S vs Manual( old topic revisited)?

I could careless manual about the numbers manual trans is the way go

Re: 997 TT Tip S vs Manual( old topic revisited)

I got SMG in my M3. It is great. Extremely fast. You have more brain power for sensing the best times to shift and feeling what the car is doing etc. Rowing thru gears is tooooo..., I dunno..., not THAT great.

This debate over manual vs PDK will be predictably nasty. and will be seen as silly in ten years.

My point: SMG, PDK, whatever: it's not for lazy or dumb drivers; it's the way to be fastest around a track and bring your involvement with the car to a higher level.

Your extra speed comes from perfect shifts initiated by extra concentration and brainpower applied to how the car and the track or road are interacting.

Not to bias my own poll but I have to agree with MMD on this one. There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that in 10 or 20 years manual clutch transmissions will be for all intensive purposes of "historical interest only."

For now, however, a choice still exists. I've heard it said that it's amazing what a great driver can do with a clutch. Unfortunately most of us aren't great drivers. It would be an interesting exercise to see how owners did on each tranny.

I've had the opportunity to drive both and have my own suspicions. I would also add that there is a learning curve with tip so with a little practice it can behave very differently than the first time you launch.

    Keep the comments coming!

    hahah, that is hilarious.
I am going to "try" to use the same excuse if i ever get married

Having had multiple wives I can say do NOT get married.

Looking back: if I got the Tip, one of them would try the car once and decide she didn't like it and would never drive it again: then I'd be "stuck" with a Tip.

So will torque converter automatic transmissons. All will be double clutch.

What I "heard" is the Tiptronic will be discontinued when PDK comes around.

That sounds like good news if this odd reasoning makes sense:

If they discontinue the Tip THAT might mean the PDK won't be outrageously expensive. Why? Because nobody's gonna buy a car their wife can drive if the optional tranny costs us$10K to buy.

Getting the PDK repaired might be another $tory as far a$ co$t$ are concerned.

I would love to order an '08 with a PDK! But I'm getting tired of hearing about the PDK's release being imminent. I'll be surprised if the 997 ever gets the PDK. Look to the 998 or later model for it's release.

Re: 997 TT Tip S vs Manual( old topic revisited)

True story............. Last drove a manual car in late 1970's after dating a foxy chick from work. Ever try getting a lube job while driving manual??????
