100% with you on this one...

Re: 335i vs caymanS highway run .

You're comparing apples and...well, carpets here...
IMO whoever thinks the point of a Porsche is going fast down a straight line is pretty much off target.
If you wanna race on the freeway get an old souped-up Toyota Supra Turbo with NOS - that'll do the job.
Unless the Beemer is an M3 CSL or the Cayman driver is a poor driver, any 3-series BMW would be left in the dust as soon as you come to a corner.
The BMW is the businessman's comfortable pseudo-sportscar - the Cayman a real sportscar for the street.
They do two very different jobs each in their own nice way - why compare them?
Take a Cayman to the beach, and a Suzuki Vitara would outrun it-...and?

You make a good point, but for all the extra money that one pays for the Cayman compared to the 335i, there's no good reason that the Cayman shouldn't beat it in the corners as well as in a straight line (but corners are always more fun)

To respectfully differ, I think you can compare them not in terms of performance versus handling, or track versus highway, but in terms of entertainment. I've driven against the CS at the track and it is impressive. My problem with the CS is that it is so refined that it loses entertainment value, and is only marginally more involving than, say, a 335i with sport package. This is becoming truer of Porsches as so many of us have lamented. BMW is pitting its new M3 against the likes of the 997 in its brochures. Performance numbers, track data aside, the sad fact is that the two cars will probably offer the driver comparable experiences, though the Bimmer will be far more practical. If you want an civilized Cayman, that's great but Porsche needs to offer us a focused Porsche that is an alternative to the GT3.

    A good point, jlr.
Driver involvement or entertainment is purely subjective - and so of course many cars will be as entertaining as a Cayman, or any P for that matter.
I was merely referring to the speed/accelleration points made.

Re: 335i vs caymanS highway run .

In some ways, I agree. Objective data is, well, objective...However, the phenomenal experience of driving a sports car is in some ways more real than the objective data, because many objectively faster experiences (i.e., flying near 600 mph at 30,000 feet in a airliner)don't have as much meaning and don't provide thrills or enthusiasm. To me, to denigrate the subjective aspect of driving is to remove much of the meaning of the experience. If I wanted objective performance at given price point, the choices would usually be rather obvious and would rarely ever include a Porsche among them. This thread started being about the Cayman v. 335i on the highway in objective reality-land, and I do think the Bimmer is close if not better as an acceleration machine. That isn't a crime, but -- to beat a dead horse -- it is a crime when a plain vanilla BMW is about as much fun to drive as a Porsche. Obviously, that cannot be proven in objective terms, but many have written of the softness and lack of entertainment in the new Porsches (note the polemic/rhetorical nature of this post, and feel free to join the bandwagon; Porsche DOES cave in to consumer pressure...AHEM!).

Totally agree to that! Very good point!

Re: 335i vs caymanS highway run .

I don't drive on the beach nor at the track. I do drive on the highway, though, every day.

Re: 335i vs caymanS highway run .

Why do so many harp about P-cars being "underpowered"? I don't live in a world of relativity when driving my 986. The 986 is absolutely a joy to drive in every respect, but yeah, a Hyundai Sonata could probably out drag it. These cars aren't about drag racing, they're about performing surgery on tarmac.

I think this current HP race in passenger cars is ridiculous and irresponsible, especially in America. NO Hyundai needs 250hp and Bimmers drive great with under 200. Oh well! Big HP is really mandated by men who like to punch it off the line but have very little driving skill otherwise.

Good points. I like the "performing surgery on tarmac" part
Porsche - or perhaps Lotus? - should adopt this slogan.

Could it possibly be because they are "underpowered"?

Can't they be happy to ?
