    PCM drives me crazy!

My PCM drives me crazy. I have the Bose premium sound package. When I put a cd in the single slot player, it frequently cannot see the disc and refuses to eject it. It will eject it after some time, but I was not able to figure out what triggers the successful eject . Now, the multi-cd changer has a different bug. It will not load cd number 1, and will go into a deep sleep mode when I try to trick it by switching from a different cd into number 1 . There seems to be occasional engine related static in the left rear speaker, with volume turned down . The radio works great though. My car is out of warranty. Is there any simple remedy like reflashing the unit, or is it a hardware issue?
Has this been part of any official recall ever? (My car is a CS2 delivered October 2004). Thanks for any suggestions.

Even though the car is out of warranty you could still check the dealer. Even if it cost you a little extra they should be able to fix it.

    Re: PCM drives me crazy!

My CD player refused to eject CD, refused to play, then Nav system started to crash. Long story short: Entire PCM was replaced under warrenty.

Try yanking the fuse for PCM (does it have one?) or disconnect positive battery terminal for a few minutes. Make the thing reboot. When car is parked a current is still going thru PCM, so disconnecting from battery is the only way to "reboot" it.

Not sure, but this thread might help:

    Re: PCM drives me crazy!

My colleague at work has a 987 Boxster with the PCM and Nav, but no telephone. Occasionally he'll turn on the radio, (non BOSE), and some Spanish language radio station starts playing. Even if he never listens to that station; even if he was listening to a CD when he last parked the car.

He was informed by somebody at the dealership that it was a know problem associated with the 'selection playing' message that many radio stations transmit along with their audio. Seems this station transmits some sort of unique byte stream that gets captured by the PCM and causes it to switch to their station. A complaint had been registered with the station.

    Hey, that's what he said....

There is a software update (W610) available for the PCM's internal CD player. IIRC, it can be applied to PCM's older than late April '05. For details see PCA.org

You could also try the PCM's reboot sequence: While the PCM is on press the keys 1, 4 and 8 simultaneously until the screen goes black.

Just for the record, my PCM failed completely after about 18 months and was replaced under warranty.

    Hey, that's what he said....

Tell your friend to turn off the "traffic mode" - that should fix the random station change - it's in the manual.

When will we have an iPod interface?

    Re: PCM drives me crazy!

I have done the 1-4-8 reboot. The screen went black after a second of grey pin-stripes, so I assume that the reboot was successful. I was surprised though that the programmed radio stations were not deleted. Can you confirm that this is correct?

    Re: PCM drives me crazy!

That the stations and other personal settings are not deleted is ok. Usually, these settings are saved in non-volatile memory that also survives a battery disconnect. Somewhere in the PCM's menus is a reset to factory settings menu item. That should delete the stations and other personal settings.

    Re: PCM drives me crazy!

I was fiddling about with the satellite navigation system last night on my 997S. I'm planning to go on a tour of Europe this Summer so I thought I would see how detailed my own road plans need to be or whether I can just leave it to the car to do it for me. Well, although the interface could be a little easier to use, the functionality is superb.

To pick a couple of examples: I typed in Strasbourg and then POI (places on interest) and it listed my hotel. Great! And it allows me to pick a Dynamic Route (avoiding traffic using the Traffic Messaging Channel) which avoids motorways and avoids tolls. Even better!.

I then typed in Zurich and again picked POI and it listed all the car parks there so that I can go straight to a car park where I want to go sightseeing. Simply fabulous!

Sure, the PCM has a lot of buttons and the user interface is complicated but once you get the hang of it, it can do quite a lot!
