    Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

I got tons of infos, maybe I'm able to answer some of your questions. A lot of technical details are already available in our NEWS section, just search for it.

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

    RC,
    1) Not technical Q. but any idea if they'll offer brush guards or like Safari package on it?

    2) Can you lower the car or since they've got air suspension it can not be done?

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

Will the navi have DVD or CD rom ?

    Easy ones

And I was afraid someone would ask the impossible.
    Here are the answers:

The Advanced Offroad Tech Package will be available starting MY 2004. This package includes a rear axle lock differential (electrically operated), the so called "off-road swaybars" which can be electrically de-connected, some sideskirts with fender protection and skid pads, an improved undercarriage and a headlight washing system.

The so called Offroad Design Package will be available from the start, it includes the same sideskirts with fender protection and skid pads, partially silver painted sideskirts (the lower part) and a front plastic ramming protection guard (sorry, I don't know if this is the right english word for it) on the Cayenne S only.

So there are 2 Offroad Packages available, one technical incl. some optical enhancements too and one design package.

The Offroad Navigation System (incl. waypoint nav.) for the PCM System will be available starting with MY 2004.

The following off-road (semi-offroad) tires will be available:
    All-Season 255/55 R 18V limited to 240 kph top speed.
    All-Terrain 235/60 R 18T limited to 190 kph top speed.

    In reply to:

You can NOT lower the car by installing a conventional coilover kit or different dampers, springs, etc.
This is valid for the air suspension system equipped cars (standard on the Cayenne Turbo).
BUT...I'm sure there will be some ECU tweaks available for the air suspension as time goes by.
Actually, this isn't necessary at all.
Why? Well, let me explain the air suspension system on the Cayenne...it is a pretty impressive system if it works at it's factory specs:

The driver can manually choose 5 different height settings on the air suspension but some heights are adjusted automatically too:
    • 157 mm height - this is for speeds below 5 kph only (for easy loading)
    • 179 mm height - automatically adjusted at speeds over 210 kph to improve stability (NO manual adjustment)
    • 190 mm height - automatically adjusted at speeds over 125 kph
    • 217 mm height - Standard Height
    • 243 mm height - automatically adjusted with Low Range feature, up to 100 kph
    • 273 mm height - only below 30 kph, afterwards automatic adjustment to 243 mm

So the only height you can NOT choose manually is the 179 mm height which is adjusted automatically at speeds over 210 kph (131 mph). This high speed adjustment is kept for about 60 seconds at speeds under 170 kph and is immediately adjusted to 190 or 217 mm below 100 kph. At speeds over 210 kph, it takes about 10 seconds until the automatic adjustment to 179 mm height works.
    Sounds pretty complicated, right?!

    DVD or CD?

As far as I know...CD. But I don't have a 100% info on that yet.

The TV option and Voice Activation module (for the phone?) will be available starting with MY 2004.
I also don't have any info if the phone option will be available to the US market too.

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

I see on the Paris motor show 2 different sets off wheels
Which is the standard 18" wheels?
Or is it the !9" and the 20" wheels?

    Thanks
    Gt3
    Ordered Cayenne S

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

Both, the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo have 8J x 18 wheels as standard.
    The 9J x 19 and 9J x 20 wheels are optional on both cars.

Personally, I like the Cayenne Turbo 18'' and the 20'' wheel very much.

Point me to a link of a picture or describe it and I can tell you which wheel it is.

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

    Are this the 19" weels?
And this the standard 18" Cayenne S wheels?

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

Lower trim mouldings. The Turbo comes with body color and the S comes in grey or black. Can anything be done to get the S lower body mouldings in the body color?

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

The upper picture with the red brake calipers shows the 20" wheel. The lower picture with the silver calipers shows the 19" wheels.

Thanks RC Informative as usual. You da man

    Thanks

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

1- What brand/model tyres are available for the cayenne?

2- What is the off road mesurements for both the standard s suspension and turbo air suspension?(ground clearence, approach angles, departure angles, etc...)

3- The limit you refer to in the post about tyres is the tyre limit or is it a real speed restrictor fitted to the car?

4- Do you have a full list of options? what about their prices?

5- What options will be available as a retrofit? will the offroad packages be available as retrofit?

6- Do you know when there will be a cayenne configurator at the porsche website?

Well, these will do for now...RC, you asked!...

    Thanks.

Well, I know that I'm dumb...this happens if I can't keep my mouth shut.

Let me try to answer a few things:

    1. I don't have any clear information on the brand yet but I heard something about Continental and Pirelli.
I also heard that Porsche doesn't require the N-rating on the Cayenne tires anymore but I don't have any confirmation on that.
    2. I have all data but it would take me an hour to write down everything. Here are the maximum values which should be of most interest (only cars with air suspension and special off-road setting): front 32* and rear 27-28* (edge angel...sorry don't know the right english word) and 24* (ramp angle...don't know if this is the right english word). Maximum ground clearance (special off-road setting) is 273 mm (compared to the standard 217 mm). This means that it is possible to raise the Cayenne's height by almost 6 cm! You do the conversion to inches.
On the Cayenne S with the standard suspension, things don't
look that good. I can give you the numbers if you want to.
    3. the limit I'm referring to is the limit given by the tires.
    4. yes, I have a full list of options. But it is impossible to write down everything and I have no clearance to publish the list.
Tell me what option you're looking for and I tell you if it is available. I have no US prices yet.
    5. the Offroad Advanced Technic Package will not be available for retrofit. It is a very interesting option and without this option, heavy off-road capabilities are compromised. Unfortunately this option will be available from MY 2004 on. The Offroad Design package should be available for retrofit, at least most features. Attention: the towing hook (sorry, don't know the english word...that thing you need to tow boats, etc.) isn't retrofittable. It is highly recommended that you order it from the factory because it improves the Cayenne's towing capabilities.
    6. The Cayenne Configurator will be available around december as far as I heard. But I don't know if this applies to the US website too. I guess they have to make this thing run before they start selling cars, right?

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

    Thanks a lot RC.

I have been dreaming of this car for a couple of years now.
Right now I am only looking for info and maybe in a couple of months time I can come to a buying decision.

I am located in Portugal and we have a auto tax that makes the cayenne S cost around 98000 Euros here...

Anyway, any possible info you can give would be a lot of help.

Do you have any idea how a cayenne S would compare to a grand cherokee off road? on road I don't even need to ask...

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

The Cayenne S with air suspension and the Advanced Offroad Technic Package should be superior to the Grand Cherokee...off-road. I heard real astonishing stories about the Cayenne's off-road capabilities but right now, this is nice theory only. I'll have the chance to drive a Cayenne Turbo mid of december and I'm sure that CR, our other Editor-In-Chief, will get a Cayenne too for a nice off-road trip. He's a real pro regarding off-roading and he'll surely make his points, cons and pros. That's him on this picture.

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

Do you have any idea of what prices we should expect for the air suspension option and off road technic package?

Can you share some of those stories? I have heard that while desert testing the cayenne with a bunch of other cars for comparation, the porsche team managed to roll an ML, Break the frame on a gmc truck and destroy an x5 to pieces...:D

About the standard S suspension, won't it be ok for light off road use? I know that the ride height is important, but a Jeep GC is lower still. It should surelly be better than the x5 you have in the picture. <img src="http://www.rennteam.com/w3timages/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

By the way, model year 2004 means cars delivered from september 2003, right?

    Thanks again,

    Ricardo

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

I don't know what Porsche wants to charge for the air suspension and Advanced Offroad Technical Package. I can find out on Monday but I'm not sure that a price tag is available for the Advanced Offroad Package yet. The Design Package alone (without the additional rear differential and "decouplable" swaybars) costs 2047 EUR in Germany (incl. 16% tax), so my guess would be at least something around 3500-4000 EUR for the Technical Package. Pure speculation though. The air suspension is a pretty complicated system and the Technical Offroad Package also includes an additional differential which improves off-road capabilities and the electrical swaybars which can be "decoupled"-both aren't cheap systems.

Yes, MY 2004 means cars delivered from end of august on but sometimes Porsche produces some new MY cars even in July.

BTW: if the price tag is an issue for you, you might want to wait for the V6 Cayenne. As far as I know, the V6 is ready to go but will be introduced around MY 2005.
The V6 has a speedo going up to 260 kph (actually only 240 is visible as a number), the V8 has 270 and the Turbo 300 on the speedo. Power is rumored to be in the 240 HP range.

Re: Somebody having any CAYENNE questions?

Well, it was my initial idea to wait for the v6, but now I am not so sure. I really want a cayenne with a Porsche engine...and I really don't think that maximum speed or even the number indicated on the speedo is a reason to buy this car.

Regarding price, what really makes me mad is that we have this tax situation in Portugal where you pay an amount for cc's in the engine, so we get a cayenne v8 for the price of a cayenne turbo in germany and we will probably get the v6 at the same price of what you would pay for an S...Furthermore, we pay vat over the price of this tax( Tax on tax...)

I will try to get an S next year, but I am not sure I will not go for a P or F car instead, new or used and keep the Pajero(Montero?) I have as a family car...

    Ricardo.

    Ricardo...

I didn't know that the portuguese car taxes are that high.
It might sound stupid but why not making a complaint in Bruxelles?
I mentioned the speedo numbers only to indicate the difference between the Cayenne models and to prove that a V6 is coming.
The V6 won't be a real Porsche engine as far as I heard, it will be VW's V6 with slightly more power (the Touareg V6 has 220 HP).

    Re: Ricardo...

The E.C. has been trying to get the goverment to change the taxes on cars in Portugal for a couple of years...But it is always a maybe next year situation...Our goverments bugdget would be in real trouble if the situation changed( at least that's what they say...), so Brussels has not enforced any kind of change.

SUV's and off road cars were amongst the cheapest in europe a couple of years ago, because they suffered a tax reduction, but the goverment ended this benefit.

Of course, off road and suv sales plunged down like you wouldn't believe...

What would be the best choice?

Well, Anyway, I guess the best choice between s and turbo is going to depend very much on what you do with the car.

Of course the turbo will be superior powerwise, but, maybe people who intend to take the cayenne off road should get an s and then lift up the suspension and put some more offroad tyres on it.

Would you really compromise your cayenne turbo by putting the off road tyre option and then only have tyres rated to 180 km/h, I don't think I would...

Then again, most of us, including me, don't take our suv's off road so often and use them mostly as a replacement for a daily car.

You should ask the question if you are getting a cayenne to replace your Range Rover, Cherokee, etc or if you are trying to replace your BMW m5, Mercedes Amg...

For the first option maybe you should get an S with off road tyres and either raise the suspension or get the air suspension option.

For the second option, maybe you should get a Turbo with 20 inch wheels.

Does this make sence to you guys?
