Reportedly, one of the reasons they chose to change it now was the overtaking opportunities at Shanghai, hoping that the penalty will effectively be annulled as a result.

But, if Rosberg starts on pole and gets a good start, he will be difficult to overtake, barring an accident, mistake or bad pitstop, even for Hamilton, who has often remarked that the aero on this cars makes overtaking extremely difficult. I completely agree with him and his comments that if they want to make the racing better, they need to significantly reduce the aero.

Revealed: The best Formula One driver of all time according to SCIENCE

This Daily Mail article lists the top 50, haven't been able to access the full top 100 list (Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports). Juan Manuel Fangio tops the list. Michael Schumacher (9th) does better if his "comeback" isn't included (3rd). Alonso ranked 3rd. Button is ranked 14th -- kiss -- which bolsters my theory he is the most underrated driver on the grid today. The ratings are over the driver's entire career, and some current drivers, like Riccardo, might move up with more races under their belts.

Other current drivers I picked out of the top 50:

    • Vettel 10th
    • Hamilton 11th
    • Rosberg 13th
    • Raikkonen 29th
    • Ricciardo 42nd

Re: 2016 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

Rough day for Hamilton yesterday. At least the choice to change his gearbox didn't cost him, but that has to be tough just sitting watching Qualifying. A podium from the back this time will be difficult, but it should be interesting watching him work his way through the field.

Otherwise, Qualifying back to normal and pretty interesting to watch for the first time this season. Surprising result for Ricciardo.

Re: 2016 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

What a fantastic race! Dan Ric shows once again that he is a future WC for sure. I reckon even as early as next year with Red Bull because that Renau...sorry Tag power unit is going to get better and the new aero rule will surely play into RBR's hand.

Interesting race, for a change, especially after the first six crazy laps!!

Is it my imagination or has Nico had his left ear pinned back?

Think that guy is a fan of Prost and Alonso, not so much Senna.

Senna has to be the greatest ever, no one else have his car control touch, his intuition of probing a car's limit is beyond human.

Best race in years. What a horrible weekend for Hamilton, things just went from bad to worse and he couldn't catch a break anywhere.

Well, I don't think you can really view it as an absolutely accurate ranking, but the results come out of whatever model was created to produce it. However, I think it's an interesting and provocative attempt to look at driver performance outside the effects of drivers simply having a good car most of the time. I mean, put any 2 drivers into a Mercedes since 2014, or Red Bull before that, and one of them would still have likely won the championship, so how do you evaluate them beyond that?

Re: 2016 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

And Alonso had a dominant car, or at least the top 2 cars to have for both his World Championship seasons.

So obviously the ranking is flawed. It took away the car effect from everyone else but Alonso.

Also, for example, Schumacher "made" the teams what they then were - before joining they were nowhere, after he restructured them he used them to win all the championships.

Exactly, Alonso appears to have no skill in this regard... This was a much better race for a change.

Re: 2016 Chinese F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai

That's a very good point. It doesn't directly address the driver's skill as a "driver", but, if the driver can drive the team to produce him a better car, that should probably count for something.
