Is the Porsche warranty worth having ?

Recently my 997 Turbo started losing pressure from the left rear tyre, so I took the car along to a local performance tyre specialist to check it out. They found a broken screw in the tyre, BUT when they removed the tyre they also found some serious cuts on the inside, nowhere near the screw hole. Their view was a manufacturing defect which could have potentially serious safety issues.

They offered to replace the tyre sending the original back to Bridgestone for a refund, but I said as the car is still under warranty I'd get Porsche to have a look and to check the other rear tyre.

So I took the car along to the OPC who photographed the problem area in the tyre and sent the results to the Porsche warranty department. Today I got a phone call from the OPC saying that the warranty department wouldn't replace the tyre 'as it was probably the specialist tyre company that had caused the cuts when taking the tyre off the rim'

I couldn't believe them to be such a bunch of tossers.

So I spent Pounds105,000 on a new turbo and they wouldn't even speak to me sensibly about replacing a tyre, which I doubt costs Porsche more than Pounds100. Plus of course the obvious safety implications, if I'd crashed and it was found that the tyre was faulty then it would have cost Porsche a lot more than just a tyre !

I've heard other much more serious problems with Porsche warranty in the UK, is this just me or are they this bad everywhere. Having owned BMW's and Mercedes where the warranty is excellent, I find the response from Porsche staggering.

Re: Is the Porsche warranty worth having ?

In the States, if necessary, I would simply go over the service managers head. Call or write the regional manager. Make sure your complaint is accurately documented. Porsche is not in the business of losing customers and particularly TT customers. In my experience, they will not lose a customer unless they feel the car was abused (ie. burnt out clutch, track abuse, etc.). However, and I'm no expert, if there is a nail/screw in a tire it is generally considered normal wear and tear and not covered under warranty. I understand what your saying vis a viz MB/BMW - I haved owned both marques and they readily replace wear and tear items (such as seat belts, light bulbs, windshield wipers, etc.). Again, I do not recall MB/BMW paying to replace any of my tires. Maybe others have had different experiences.

I personally am not a happy camper when I found out my car had the Bridgestones and not the Michelins. Can't wait to replace this tire. I understand they last the longest of the bunch (who cares) I'll take the Michelins PS2's anyday! The Bridgestones are much cheaper in cost FYI compared to the others. Kinda sucks that were stuck with what comes with the car instead of designating your preferred brand on a $150,000 car. I understand the company's profits are not up to par with the others?(cough)......OK that was a cheap shot but come on Porsche!

In this case there's no such thing as a cheap shot. We agreed to Expect Excellence, remember?

They'd blow you (us) off after putting on dangerous tires? "Staggering" is a perfectly stunning word to describe it.

    WOW.

Re: Is the Porsche warranty worth having ?

Ironically, I love my Potenza's, particularly on wet roads. I think they are excellent all weather tires. On a dry surface alone I'd rather have the Pilot Sports, but here in NY inclement weather is a daily, if not unexpected, occurrence. Obviously Porsche NA should give us a choice, but then again, that would be too easy.

I suggest reading the Tire Rack's Technical page on Porsche "N" rated tires. I also have the Bridgestones on my car and, although I have only very limited experience with the car, the tires seem very well suited to the car's capabilities.
