Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

Sure, a GT3RSR took top honors in GT2 at Le Mans, but are the F430s just too quick in the shorter ALMS races? Is the RSR just too heavy?

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

According to Sean Edwards, Porsche are coming out with a package that will correct some of the 997's shortcomings in relation to the 430's

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

Any details on this? Or is top secret?

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

Flying Lizard Motorsports is ten points behind Risi Competizione in the team championship while Johannes van Overbeek and Jörg Bergmeister are six points behind Mika Salo and Jaime Melo in the drivers' championship. Johannes and Jörg have been very consistent this year; 2nd place in every race other than one. It looks bad that a GT3 RSR hasn't one a single race but Tafel Racing has been up there in the top three most of the time. Even the sister car to Melo and Salo's car has done so poorly I do not know who drives it and the Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning car isn't a blip on the radar. Flying Lizard Motorsports has a strong chance to win this championship because they are consistent, plus there is seven rounds left in the season.

No further details, but they'd better be quick about it and ...it better bloody well work!

Has a team ever won without ever coming in first? That would be a strange accomplishment. It would require Melo/Salo to stumble for a few races as well.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

I personally think the Ferrari package is too strong this year.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

The reason why Flying Lizard Motorsports is so close to Risi Competizione is from the DNF Mika Salo and Jaime Melo had at Salt Lake City, but Risi's second car came in third with 10 points. This also helped in the driver's championship but I looked at the American Le Mans sites and I am off on the points, Johannes and Jörg are actually 14 points behind Salo and Melo. I think there is a chance Flying Lizard Motorsports can win a race and the championship, most of the time their cars have been on the same lap as the leading Ferrari. And again, there are seven races still underway. The only thing I do not see changing is Ferrari's lead in the manufacturer's championship.

    +1

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

Do winning cars get weight penalties for good performance in the ALMS? I cannot remember.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

    No! Thank God!

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

    Thanks.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

I wonder if it's worthwhile for Porsche to spend much more money and time developing the 997 RSR, as the GT2 cars will be "dumbed down" for 2008 and beyond.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

Probably not if the ACO announcements become official. As for now they are investigating the possibilities of lowering costs that may be inplemented soon. From what I understand the ACO is looking at using factory engines and reducing in-onboard electronics, so in other words Porsche could focus on the suspension geometry and aerodynamics.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

Oh Boy!The 997's got another thrashing today at Monza.
This is really getting quite serious!

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

So what class of racing is it in the Rolex today where a GT3 Cup won, but an RX8 was in second (and a mustang in 4th, I think). Obviously the RX8 and Mustang weren't stock...

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

That would be the Grand Am, which the class is called GT.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

    From Racer magazine

'In every possible way it's better,' says Risi Competizione team manager David Sims of the F430 compared to the F360. 'It's easier to drive, it's a better balanced car, there's a little more power and it's easier to set up.'

Last season, the F430 and 996 weer close. The Porsche team expected the new 911s to be better, to put a gap between them and the Ferrari. It didn't work out that way., if the results so far in 2007 are any indication. They may have been working on the same car as last year, but Ferrari and the Risi team cartainlu did their homework.

'We had some problems last year, like straight line speed, losing Porsche out of the corner because they have the rear engine and get great traction out of the corner,' Sims explains. 'There's a little bit of an advantage. But we're very good on the brakes. We've worked a lot on that, and we can brake massively later than the Porsche.'

    some paragraphs later....

'I think [the Ferrari has an advatange] in the handling through the corners,' says Enge. 'It looks to me like [the Porsches] are slightly, slightly faster on the straights. [The F430] is a lighter car. They have a heavier car, probably 100 kilos, because they've got wider rear tires; but they're a little faster on the straight. They are losing slightly under braking, and we're equal or slightly better through the corners'

'The Porsche, to get everything out of it, you're very busy in the car,' he says (Michael Petersen). 'The Ferrari is much more like an open wheel car where everything is very precise. To go fast in the Porsche, youhave to be on the ragged edge; if you're on the ragged edge in the Ferrari, you're going slow. So it's very different opposite ends of the spectrum. They're both good cars, just totally different driving styles.'

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

    Very interesting post Modrocket.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

sorry for the typos. I had written the article on paper and typed it all up last night. Should have spent some time proof reading it but I was tired.

Re: Can Porsche salvage the ALMS season in GT2?

The Porsche's straight line speed was confirmed at Le Mans. They posted higher speeds on the Mulsanne straight than those posted by Ferrari.
