What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up?

I readm somewhere on a French forum than one guy had his blown up 3.4 replaced by a 3.6 by Porsche. I doubt so, but then, anybody if this is possible?
If this would happen to me I would consider:
    - replacing 3.4 by the 3.4 X51 (which gave 320hp)
    - replacing 3.4 by 3.6
Both items above only if done by Porsche
    OR
    - if none works, send the car to a tuner to put something spicy in it?

    Any thoughts, experiences?

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up?

My 3.4l engine blown out and after talking with Porsche tech the replace for a 3.6l unit was a no option. Had to put a remanufacter 3.4L at Porsche.

    That's what I thought. Thanks!
I wonder was is the reason for that though.

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up?

Not on purpose for sure, but still paranoiac with this engine bloc So i am trying to think that if it happens, I can get something better out of it !

GT3 engine would be a wild move if you could find one used it is 10 times better and stronger than the weak M96

that' s something interesting to do... Jeannot, blow up that engine quickly, you are not going to be happy untill you get that GT3 engine in your car

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up

Yeah, but who would do that for me uh ?? not AMAG

Well if you want to blow the beast it's easy just go to large U turn and make it full gas, you'l have oil starving inside the engine and next thing you know your engine is without power and vibrating alot, so that's it, it's toasted that's nearly what happened to mine.

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up

I did not mean who would blow the engine, but who would put another type engine in if that happens :-)

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up

He could probably do it... http://www.mecacomponents.com/index.html

But would you want to entrust your car to a Porsche "specialist" who does not even know that the name Boxster is spelt with an "s"?

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up

I think Sportec can do it. At least they can offer a 3.8l for you :-)

That' s bad ...but he does have a very good reputation around here ! And the place is great to look at... old style garage with lots of Porsche half mounted , parts everywhere... engines here and there... .. grease everywhere !!

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up?

Being a bit of a novice - and seeing talk of engine blow ups on 996 on various forums - I have an 03 996 - with the 3.6L - is this the good engine or the bad one I rean a lot about one of the seals causing the engines to blow - do I need to worry about it on this one?

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up?

Mine blew up!!!!!!!! I had a new crate 3.6 put in.. The only thing to keep in mind is to rewire for variocam and reprogram the computer. Porsche will not do it, Porsche service SUCKS.. Any reputable tuner will do it.

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up?

Anthedwards. BUY THE EXTENDED Warranty, It's crazy not to...

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up?

Sorry about your problem J. Seven..... What did you do with your engine????

I gave back my engine to Porsche as core. So right now my blown engine must be running in some other Porsche after being remanufacter by Porsche.

Yes, you need to worry - all 996 motors are subject to RMS failure, except GT3, GT2 and Turbo (they can have RMS failures too, but much less common).

However, RMS failure doesn't mean your engine will blow - just leak oil. If you drive it with no oil, that's another matter...

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up?

Where do you see the oil leaking from - where should I check?

You'll see oil in your garage floor under the engine.

Friend of mine just sold his 996 3.6 after three RMS replacements. Was afraid of a possible blown engine in the future because another friend of him just had a blown engine in a 996. He his a member here and just bought a beautiful 996 S Cab

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up

I think engine blow-up and RMS are two different issues with the 996/986 bloc. RMS is a pain, but you can fix. A blown up engine is a different story as it would be $10K (min) to replace. I touch wood and always check oil and warm the engine fully before going up the revs.

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up

The majority of the 996 engine failures, not RMS, occured in the first 2 years of the model run with the 3.4 engines. If you have a 3.6, don't worry and enjoy the car.

Re: What would you do if your 3.4L engine blows up

But if my engine blows up, I do not necessarily want to build a track car out of my 996C4 :-)

Pardon me... but I find that highly suspect. These cars have been shown to maintain far higher slick pad lateral accelerations than you can ever pull on a U-turn. Something else was going on.

Also, allow me... did you have any type 2 overrevs recorded?
