Thinking of selling my 997. Where should I list it

I'm thinking of selling my 06 997 Cab. Where is a good place for me to list the car? Does Ebay or Cars.com really work for a car list this? I have owned my car for about 18 months and only have 6500 miles on it. I feel like I am wasting money just having the car sit in my garage.

Your going to lose 15-20 k if your car has 6500 miles or 16500 miles. Just drive it and trade it for a new one in 3 years when the new model comes out. The face lift is not going to be a major change

These cars are for driving - get out and enjoy!!!...

I bought the car because I had planned on driving it. After owning it for 18 months I find myself not driving it, hence why I asked the question about selling it.

I'm not looking to buy a new one or a new model year. I'm thinking of selling mine and not replacing it.

I'd love to find out which dealer will only make me lose $20k! I called the dealer where I bought my 2006 997S with Aerokit and Powerkit and they told me a trade in value of $73K for a car that cost me $123K and change!!! Mind you that I placed the order in November 2005 and the car arrived in March 2006, so it is only 1 year old and it has 9500 miles. They told me they are getting 08s in the next couple of months and that all the options are not going to make it worth any more! I should have waited a year and gotten a GT3! I guess this is a keeper then.

This is why I pause on buying , its due to work and yes it is my lifestyle (at the moment) ....

Maybe you could find someone on here to buy it , must be a nice example...

I purchased my '06 C2S last summer after months/years of contemplation and thought. I do think about how expensive the car is and the fact that I don't drive it that much (4400 mi in 10 months). It is a lot of money to be tied up in an asset (with a decreasing value) that doesn't get much use. So it seems like the choices are to use it more (it doesn't sound like from your comments above that this is an option); come to terms with it's current use and justifiy it in your mind that your enjoyment when you do drive it overcomes your desire to get rid of it (especially afer the loss of value over the last 18 mos. which will slow down considerably over the next several years) (this is the category I'm in); or, do what you are contemplating and sell it (for a considerable loss). Good luck with this tough decision!

I sold an '03 BMW 525i on Ebay last year and I was relatively happy with the results. It took me two auctions to sell it and I got fairly close to my asking price. I also listed it on Autotrader.com and never got any responses. It's best if your not in a hurry to sell because it my take you several auctions to get anywhere close to your asking price (especially for a car this expensive) and post plenty of pics. Good luck!

I have bought several cars on eBay including my last 996 and my current 997S. That said, it's not the place for a seller to get the best price but it can be great for enthusiasts to find a bargain.

I know it's too late now but - we all would like to be that guy who buys the $120K one-year-old car for $74K - I know, I am that guy.

The best bet might be to join or visit a local Porsche club. There you will meet Porsche buyers who visit the dealer frequently and know that the dealers prices are high, even for used cars, and they may well be interested in your low mileage car. Next I would advertise in the local paper if you are in large city.

The Porsche dealers are a complete joke. The one offering the $74K trade would turn around and try to sell it for $110K the next day with a straight face. Forget the dealer.

Anyway, the lesson is that buying used Porsches can save a lot of money. Low mileage, one or two year old Porsches are typically cared for with kid gloves and are hardly any different from new other than the $20 - $40 K savings. In fact, as has been pointed out - you can get some nice options virtually for free. I bought my 997S for $40K + my '99 996 that the dealer offered me $17K for (84K miles!).
The 997S was a $100K launch car with 20 months and 30K miles. I will drive it for a couple of years as a daily driver and at most lose $10K.

these cars are for very rich individuals. i myself am not very rich but once i do i think maintaining the pcar should not be a problem. (i know blah blah blah i can spend the money elsewhere where it is more worthwhile) but then if you do have to extra cash to spent, why not throw out that extra cash and buy something you can enjoy everyday to work? (i know some of you might not have to work by the time you can buy this car

)

It's about that special feeling....

My advice to anyone thinking of selling their 911 on the grounds that they don't drive it enough is this:

Think of it like a romance that lost some of its spark. You need to rekindle it. I would spend some weekends out driving in scenic places to find that special feeling again.

If it rekindles, great, that's your problem solved. You'll have rediscovered what you were taking for granted.

But, OTOH, if you are still unchanged in your feelings, then sell it and ask yourself if you need a replacement....

UK guys - where do you recommend selling 997s in the UK privately?

My OPC is trying to totally rape me on the trade-in and I could save some lucky new owner at least Pounds5k over what they would pay the next day through Porsche in their showroom...

Alex, autotrader is quite good if you want to sell it privately. All the so-called dealers will reap you off since they want to make a bit of money on the car themselves.You also have to remember that the longer it sits on the forecourt of the dealer, the more money they loose and the facelift is round the corner so sales are slow. Are you getting another 911 if I may ask and also which one are you getting ?

Autotrader scares me for selling anything over about 20k. Getting people to part with that sort of money is never easy and I would just be played about a LOT.

Can you not ask your OPC to do a sale or return? I sold my last 996 this way. I also advertised it on Bloomberg and had two nibbles.

Trouble is, many people buy on finance and want the security of a warranty. Using a SoR you may need to deduct the cost of a warranty, the pre-inspection & their cut, but the OPC will be able to charge more for it. You also don't get the hassle of tyre kickers & potential thieves.

FWIW I was offered a well optioned 2005 997 C2S C16 car (but import) recently. OPC had bid was Pounds45K. I'm still undecided on going for the facelift 997 in April. Oversupply has killed residuals in UK.

I think the warranty is on the car and therefore transferable if you sell it privately. For OPC to sell it, they'd have to put 12 months & perform the 112 point check. (that's the approved used program). It's worth having the conversation with them. The biggest downside for me was being without a car for a while. (It sold within 6 weeks but the money took 8 weeks)

If you're really serious about selling, try to sell it to a private party. You'll probably get more than you'd get by trading it or selling it to a dealer. If a prospective buyer wants to get the Porsche inspection, let them do it and pay for it themselves. They'll know what needs to be done and so will you, so you can then negotiate a decent price.

Suggest you consider listing it in "Excellence," unless you consider their rates too high. You might consider getting the official Porsche inspection and advertising the fact that it goes with the car. A prospective buyer will probably want to see a copy of it and compare the mileage listed on it with the actual mileage on the car.

If you instead decide to advertise locally, be prepared to allow a prospective buyer to take it for the official Porsche inspection (he or she pays for it, of course). This way you can get closer to a fair price without a buyer harassing you if they had to fix something that was not apparent. Better not to have to deal with something like that. After all, you want to sell the car, not be reminded of it by a dissatisfied buyer.
