Wow! Where do you guys live? My drive to the office, whether I take the back roads or the highway, involves traffic moving at 30 mph, and stretches of stop and go.

Didn't you know? Exotic car owners are surrounded by back roads with no limits that lead them every place in the world at full throttle.

    Supermarket? Back road!
    Office? Back road!
    Center of NYC? Back road!

Dunno what Whoopsy is going on about. What does a car have to do with the route you take? You can only drive one car at any given time. You can't just pick and choose what car to drive at any given time. You leave home in what you leave home in and what roads you take depends on nothing more than where you're going, what you want to see, and how quickly you want to get there.

It's like saying no one would drive a 918 at 80 mph on a highway for 4 hours. Actually, a 918 fits perfectly on a boring highway drive when you're just trying to get from A to B in X amount of time, just like a Tesla fits with curvy mountains roads when you're just trying to enjoy the mountains as you go from A to B.

It's not exactly a revelation that a sports car is more enjoyable on backroads and a cushy sedan on Autopilot on a highway for 400 miles. You'll most likely encounter both quite regularly anyway.

Every morning you might take the direct route through highway to the office in a Tesla and be done with it.

Someone else taking a GT3 might skip the highway and go for back road canyon carving on the way to the office.

No one in a Tesla would do that.

    Simple as that.

Nick, you forget who your are taking to? You can explain it 20 times and still Smiley... He doesn't like to drive, he doesn't even like the noise sportcars make, the more quiet the better, they are about how many pictures and compliments they get, he has never spun a car and don't put him in a bathroom without a showert curtain or we will hear about it on a thread...he even has his own smiley in RT Smiley

Tomorrow's drive to work will have initially about 20 mins of winding mountain roads with perfect asphalt and no traffic, then followed by 50 mins of great highway at triple digit speeds, ending in 10 min city traffic... The GTS loves it, best part of the day!

Re: 2017 Motor Trend Best Driver's Car

My commute is a 8min drive in my p100d at warp speed to my train station. Then a 40min express train ride into manhattan and then a 10min walk to work. Or 1hr 30min in traffic at an average of 20mph if I am lucky.....

Re: 2017 Motor Trend Best Driver's Car

The difference is that I like to drive in nice areas, period. It's merely a coincidence that I can afford exotics. I don't need to pretend a Tesla can't be enjoyable on mountain road.

I'd rather drive a VW Golf along the Kararoam Highway in China than drive a LaFerrari around the south of France...

That really is a privilege it must be awesome 👍👍

Sadly I have to drive for 40 mins outside of town to experience that !!

    Actually up to 125 mph.

The Tesla S P100D does 0-125 mph in slightly over 14 seconds as far as I remember (AMS review).

The new GLC63 S AMG SUV is supposed to hit 125 mph in a similar time.

My R8 does that (according to AMS) in 9.6 seconds (some reviews have 9.3 seconds, others 9.9 but you get the point).

A Panamera Turbo does 0-125 mph in around 11 seconds.

So where please is the "superiority" of the Tesla in this? The P100D is (fully optioned) around 170k EUR in Germany. The lease cost is basically double of the one of my R8 and more than double of the one for the upcoming GLC63 S AMG. No Tesla for me, sorry. Smiley

Also, like Rossi pointed out...these drag races are pointless. The Tesla S is just boring. I am talking from a driver's point of view, not a gadget lover/engineering point of view. Yes, I would have a Tesla S as well if I were that rich to have dozens of different cars in my garage. As my only or second car? Never ever.

Re: 2017 Motor Trend Best Driver's Car

Well, you just saw it. Doesn't matter how quick a car gets to 125, it matter how quick it gets to 124. Do you want your car to be 18s to 300 kph, or 5s to 200 kph?

The Tesla is quicker than most of those cars at low speeds such that they need long distances to make up for it. What good is being quicker to 125 is the max you need to go is 90?

The Tesla fills a niche. You guys don't like it or don't need it. So be it. No one claims the Tesla is the all around best car in the world for every situation. It's a very solid 1st or 2nd car for most people who would be willing to spend the money.

You don't seem to understand: For me, this car doesn't feel a niche...unless you are into drag racing. Europeans aren't too much into that. Yes, we love (sometimes Smiley) to race another car (or motorcycle, I only do motorcycles Smiley Smiley) from a stop light but most people I know couldn't care less about 0-100 kph performance. Smiley

Tesla S P100D does 0-125mph in 10,5 sek so not sure where you got 14 sek from. Not that I care, but right should be right.

This entire acceleration thing is just getting boring. P100D is mainly a marketing thing (a good one), 99% of the buyers run around in the non P-versions and use them for what they're supposed to be good at, not dragracing at a strip.

ps. A fully loaded P100D is 155k EUR in Germany, not 170k.

Re: 2017 Motor Trend Best Driver's Car

0-125 mph in 10.5 seconds? The AMS test of an early production car had a different result. Weird. Maybe they improved the performance after that test?

Even if so, it doesn't matter. I would still prefer an emotional car more.

Again: This is me, I switched from a 991.1 Turbo S to a 991.1 C4 GTS Cabriolet, so maybe now you get my point.

The R8 is again way more emotional than the 911 GTS and so far, only the Carrera GT I drove was maybe more emotional than my R8 (you can actually replace this with a Huracan, Aventador, F12...cars with a soul...and a voice).

Different strokes for different folks I guess...  wink

Re: 2017 Motor Trend Best Driver's Car

I fail to see how you compare a Tesla to a sport car. Some people here keep reverting to that. The Tesla is a cool fast acceleration high tech people mover. A sport car is a fun weekend toy and occasionally a daily commuter for a single person.

Compare the Tesla S to sedans and X to SUVs. The Tesla destroys the competition in the USA and sell more cars than any other in the luxury segment today. If the X 100D (non P) existed when we ordered the RRS we would probably be driving it today. When the model Y comes out the Macan will probably be in serious trouble.

Germans manufacturers need to wake up ASAP. They need full EVs in the next two years in EVERY model line and they need to be at competitive prices with the Teslas. For non car nuts, the Teslas are THE cars to own today. That’s how cool their image is. I have yet to meet ANYONE (outside of RT)  saying they simply don’t like or don’t want a Tesla. Some might decide against buying one eventually, but they never ruled them out initially.

Musk is a smart person. If I was him, I would ready some cool facelifts and interior upgrades. When Germans wake up, let them out of the bag. They will still be hampered by dealership inertia and silly model upgrade cycles.

Re: 2017 Motor Trend Best Driver's Car

Cayenne is a lot of fun, great build quality, amazing interior (new model but I also like the old model interior), power and performance are great as well but...the design is a little bit too old school lately (even if I still like it) but the worst part is...I think you guessed it...the price tag. I am not willing to pay so much money for a Cayenne anymore, even if it still seems to be the sportiest SUV with off-road capabilities on the market.

I assume you plan to get the latest Turbo S (when available)?

came on to read about motor trend best cars, and ended up wasting 10 min reading on Tesla... again.

I can understand why people like Tesla, although I will never buy one and will never change my mind on it.

when mission e comes out in 2 years, it will have good acceleration, and handling, and looks.  Yes, got my deposit in.

by that time, no one will ever talk about Tesla again...Oh, maybe just to discuss its poor resale value...indecision
