    Boxster - Cayman Comparison

I didn't get the Cayman when it was launched - pricing, performance, looks, the whole thing. However, after driving its somewhat clearer...... (this is sounding like a sales pitch )

blah ... blah .... blahhh ... (audience wakes up) so after driving, the dynamics have made me realise its a model in its own right, and not just a Boxster variant

So the differences, without doing a comparison

    - Much firmer suspension, I can definitely tell its on 19"s
    - Very pointy, with more direct steering
    - Bit quieter inside, so stereo easier to hear
    - Feels lighter and more nimble
    - Engine is more responsive, maybe PSE, or the fact that my outgoing 987 was VERY tight

As for PSE .... the jury is still out:

    - It sounds great when you blip the throttle from idle
    - Under normal load its virtually undetectable
    - Somewhat louder in the upper revs under load

Will report back when it has burnt in some more....

To conclude, I'm feeling happy with the Cayman. On the plus side, its kinda like a mini GT3, but will have to see if the hard ride and lack of convertibleness become an irritation.

    On to the pics......

Fantastic - that's the first time I've thought the 19" turbo wheels look good

Same to me. The Turbo rims are made for the Cayman, only !

    haha...
what is the color?metallic black?solid balck?

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

sorry, i just saw your other thread
    it is Basalt Black~~~

    the rims look perfect!!!

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

That is a beauty! I love the Cayman and would consider it to replace my Boxster. I love the lines and I think it looks better then the 911. Awesome car, I am sure you will love it!

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

    Looks sharp

Turbo rims are perfect on it

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

Awesome! And those turbo rims! I never loved them as much as I do love them on your car... beautiful!

Sounds like you're having fun with the car (which is beautiful by the way) but I do have to say that I don't agree with the above statement. Just because it drives a little differently doesn't change the fact that the majority of parts are straight-up 987.

If dynamics are all that separate a product line, RS, GT2, Turbo, GT3s and other variants could be their own separate models as well.

Must have been talking to toplad

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

Heh, I haven't followed any of his remarks about the Cayman, or anyone else's for that matter. I take it I'm not saying anything revolutionary, eh?

Not at all - unlike the Cayman Board it's a democracy here

Sure it isn't an autocracy? (People governed by cars).

But because it's a democracy you can disagree with me without fear of retribution.

Anyway, it's a great looking car (for a Cayman, of course) (only joking xbox) And those turbo wheels do look great. Seem to recognise those tips though

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

dreamcar - can you beleive the new car came with them factory fitted

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

Would have been cool if P ditched the hatchback design and went for a targa panoramic sun roof

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

    Great looking exhaust tips!

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

Was your Boxster an 06 or an 07 model? 07 models and Cayman have a more advanced valve timing arrangement (variocam plus) than 06 and earlier Boxsters - this might account for the more eager engine response you mentioned

I've always thought the door glass should follow the shape of the Boxster, then have a B pillar flaring into a large rounded glass rear window. This would flow into a humped version of the boxster bootlid, either conventional boot or a hatch depending on how the space works out. And it would keep the more pronounced rear wings.

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

Nicest looking Cayman I have seen....the turbo rims make it.

    Both the Boxsters were MY07.

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

Thanks for all the positive comments, specially about the wheels

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

Beautiful car - many congrats - yes the turbo wheels really look good on a Cayman. I think the spoke design is very similar to the 'gills' on the rear wheel arch - I think that's what helps the harmony - plus the wheels suit the somewhat angular shape of the car.

    Glad you're enjoying it,

I thought the main differences were the more direct steering and nimbler chassis too.

Not sure I agree with you on the noise though, felt the Cayman was loud enough without PSE, it must be even louder with PSE. My 986 with sports exhaust is quiter than the standard Cayman S, not sure about the 987

DC, give it a rest will you

This is wierd! I felt exactly the same...the turbo wheels look fantastic! (for the first time)

    Re: Boxster - Cayman Comparison

Isn't one of them a convertible?
