997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original?

Efficiency, functionality, simplicity; all features of the _original_ compelling Porsche company ETHOS.

Here are some comps of old 911 and new 997. I'm still fascinated. What do you think happened?

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

    Here's the doors:

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

Back to the Future, of course...

    where's Marty McFly?

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

The old one is in dire need of PCM !
I see straightforward family lineage, no problem here...

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

Evolution...It always amazes me how you can get in and drive almost any year Porsche, feel comfortable and know where most everything is and what it does.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

    That's why I LOVE 997!

Nowadays, it is hard to buy a brand new timeless design car.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

I think the 997 is a beautiful car - I just wish the dimensions hadn't grown bigger in 1999...

but still smaller than most sports car.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

It still is the most practical sports car made today. Great then still great now.

I completely agree. I was admiring the compactness of a 911SC just yesterday. I wish it was smaller and lighter.

As for the dashes - the wart clearly ruins the lines of that straightforward, simple, ergonomic original design, and the 50 buttons or so on the PCM are just ridiculous.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

Here's another one just for fun. Enjoy.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original?

    MMD,

I don't really know where you are coming from. You continue to pick the 997 to pieces, yet you bought one. Why did you buy one? While I appreciate the interior from the air cooled 911's (I had a '95 993 coupe)I don't know how you could hope to duplicate the older 911's look/function with a 2007 car with airbags/air conditioning/power windows/audio system/GPS system, etc. Things that are "required" in today's cars.

What exactly do you like about the 997? I know it isn't the tail lights. And the exhaust pipes seem to drive you mad.

    Phil

Fair enough question; no offense taken.

Let's have posts which only discuss the great things, the succeses and the PERFECTION inherent in our cars, shall we?

I'm wondering how fast and how soon Porsche (and all car mfgrs) will cater totally to the lowest common denominator in order to sell the most cars to the most ordinary-minded (as far as cars go) people. You know..., cars with wings, fake quads, lots of buttons, colored-better-than-yours calipers, huge silly wheels, stuff like that: what's next? spinners on the wheels, cruise missile nosecones on the front bumper?

I'm done with BMW because of the recent "flair" they are trying to sell. I'm buying a Porsche Turbo soon and that will be my last Porsche because I can barely tolerate the thought of me driving a car with a fake wing; God knows how they will look in 2012!

Meanwhile, the ship of refinement, elegance and intelligence in styling is sinking but we car nuts must meanwhile have excellent performing cars to drive around even though they were once-totally-great-looking, right?

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

Don't fret MMD, I'm sure that someday, somehow, you'll find the vessel of your dreams, everything you've ever wanted in a vehicle...

It's clean, a true classic, pure in purpose and form...

Not too big, not too small, and certainly no unnecessary frills....

And when you're at the helm, MAN, you feel superhuman, immortal, like you could ride in that sucker FOREVER!!!

I give you, THE PERFECT DESIGN!!!

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

Here's MMD someday, grinning ear-to-ear (you've just got to imagine that his ears are still there is all...), out for a Sunday blast through the afterworld... Porsche, are you listening??

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

And best of all, no infernal stitching, and no damn quad tips! (But you may want to get a good Orkin contract on it...)

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

Should not be putting Coke in your nose in the first place.

That said. I love the coffin and all things 911.

    Actually, it was Pepsi.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

LOL. C'mon guys. Don't get all kill-the-messenger on me. I can't help it if, in this Universe, successful companies turn into victims of their own success.

I'm just trying to liven up the board with pertinent topics. You might be grateful for my intentions after reading the "painted nipples" thread.

Speaking drug use, I think the comp of the tan and black bi-color interior I posted above is so uncanny it's like having an LSD flashback.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

Agree on the dimensions. I wish my GT3 was more compact like the 993 and lighter like cars before that. But safety and technology tend to dictate more size and more weight.

LOL. I only like 50% of those made.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

MMD, I think you will always be behind the wheel of a Porsche, you like this forum too much! My Turbo should be in any day now, its time for you to take your 997S in and swap it for a Turbo! There are plenty of them to choose from so let us know what you want and we will keep our eyes and ears wide open until you get one. Deal? ......Unless your waiting for PDK? Then get your name on a list for 2008.

Hummmm..., It's all starting to sound good to me, gx. Thanks for the prompting. I really want PDK (got DSG on my M3), OTOH can't wait to get my last Porsche.

People don't get me wrong here, I love the car; or 90% of it. I just wish the 10% I don't like didn't show.

What's wrong with letting Porsche and fellow Porsche owners know that some of us _DO_ expect Excellence and are dissatisfied when we don't get it?

I especially appreciate your comment about the wing on the turbo. I too do not like wings and that would almost keep me from buying a turbo. But since you are such a traditionalist the wing on the turbo shouldn't really bother you since Porsche has been putting them on their turbos for MANY years. It is not just something that current management has done "incorporating all the latest trends to sell cars". As a matter of fact the wing on the current turbo is smaller than many of those from the past.

Maybe that is what is bothering you.....it is not as big as the wings on the old air-cooled turbos. Are you thinking "I want the old style huge wing not this modernistic crap"?

Old whale tails have engine necessities underneath them. I'm (we both are?) thinking I'll take anything that has a true necessity and function, not something that's slapped on the car to add bling factor.

That's the kind of sh*t that GM does to sell cars.

Apparently from what guys are saying here, the TT wing is not _entirely_ just slapped on; it's just somewhat slapped on.
