    Miles per UK gallon...

Got back from a business trip today. I heard that the motorway was congested, due to accidents and roadworks, so decided to take an 'A' road home instead.

Traffic was quite heavy and I had to negotiate several town centres at busy periods. Still managed to get in some spirited driving and overtaking and found the twisties far more interesting than the motorway.

The point I'm getting to is, when I checked my trip data, I was amazed to find that I'd averaged 31.6 mpg for the 122 mile journey.

The journey took me less than half an hour longer than if I'd used the motorway un-congested!!

What's the best mpg you've recorded so far?

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

    Best ever: 36.7 UK mpg.

I drove from London to Tadcaster (in Yorkshire) and back to London in one day. Total mileage: 454 miles at 32.1 UK mpg.

    Hey Easy - that's amazing.

What was your average speed (mph) for those trips?

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

About 60mph. As soon as you go above that, the mpg starts to go down.

This all happened on Sunday (this past weekend). I filled up at the petrol station and then continued my journey on the A406 and then the M1 for about the next 70 miles with a fuel consumption reading of around 36.7 UK mpg. I upped my cruising speed from about 60/65 mph to around 75/80 mph and then the fuel consumption figure fell over the rest of the journey to a stable 32 UK mpg.

All in all, the 997S is amazingly cheap to run on long, boring motorway journeys...you just keep it cruising along in 6th gear with the revs below 3000rpm...and all this was with the air conditioning ON all the time!

I can manage a maximum range of around 480-500 miles on one tankful of fuel. It's just staggering really.

I make sure I use Shell V Power always. It's 99 RON which means that, although you pay about 6p more per litre, you get better fuel consumption...i.e a little goes a longer way...I would never use any other fuel except BP Ultimate (if I had to)...

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

those are impressive figures. Mine is currently at 17.2mpg and I thought that was good. Previously was always in the 14 - 15 range. I must "enjoy" my driving more than you guys

Ronnie - yours does seem very low. I'm usually in the mid 20's for combined urban & rural, but can be down to 17-19 for very short trips from cold starts.

That still sounds incredible and your range of 480-500 is outrageous.

Just for the record, I also use V-Power (previously Optimax) and run with air-con continually on.

Did you use cruise control for those trips?

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

    No - I don't have cruise control.

Around town with a lot of stop/start driving and cold starts, I was averaging around 23 UK mpg.

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

I've got up to 29 UK mpg on long motorway trips before - using cruise control

My average (across many 1000s of miles) is currently 19.8 UK mpg

Not much of that is motorway trips however. Mainly going through town and also having fun on the A/B twisty roads where I am very lucky if I break into the 20s. If I am really hammering about on the twisty back-roads then I typically see between 16-19mpg

I too only use Shell V-Power, and Air-Con on perhaps 20% of the time. After filling up my estimated range is about 250 miles, so I have no clue how Easy is getting nearly 500! Newer engines are perhaps more economical?!

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

You sure your car is a 997S and not a 997D

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

Like Alex about 20 UK mpg.

Worst average 12 in Germany on give and take driving on autobahn.

Best average 24 on UK motorway in slow but free running traffic.

Shell Optimax and V-power, air con always left on and sport/exhaust always on, sport chrono to on.

I did see 6 once for a while on the autobahn after filling up until it clogged up.

Have to say my 996 C2 was about 20% better on fuel and not much slower.

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

If I drive spiritedly on A roads, sure, my fuel consumption figure comes down to about 22/23 mpg and my range is more like 320 miles. It all depends on the kind of driving I'm doing... but the figure for 480-500 miles range is genuine. Honestly. It's what I can get if I am doing a steady 60mph in 6th gear on the motorway.....honest!

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

I've been averaging 19.6 for the last 1000 miles or so (8,200 on the car), almost all for my 45 mile r/t commute, including a couple of miles of stop'n'go each way. So I can believe 30 for a calm 60 mph ride.

    don't forget 1 UK gallon = 1.201 US gallon.
OR 1 US gallon. = 0.833 UK gallon

    UK 30 MPG = US 25 MPG

    Cheers Easy-

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

I get exactly the same consumption figure provided I'm driving (crazy) at constant speed of 60mph (~100 kph). I did it once using my navi and I can confirm this performance is genuine. However, I normally can't go around unless I drive my P-car in the most spirited way, so consumption match more or less the other guys figures (19-21 mpg).

In any case consider the Guiness record book, don't think you're far away from getting it. At least you deserve it, right?

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

Ahh, not to forget: all figures mentioned above regard the UK gallon!

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

    Amazing!!!

    I've stroked my 2.7 upto a combined 30mpg, 395-miles from a tank, which I thought was good.

    Must try harder

Great, thanks. I've experienced 24.5 mpUSg in relaxed highway driving trips in excess of 400 miles.

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

When will we get rid of imperial measurements? US gallons are different from UK gallons etc etc. Why can't we all just use the more logical metric system? In my dreams!

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

How on earth lt/100km will make sense Easy instead of mpg? It will be much difficult, right?

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

You picked the one example (L/100km) that I find the least useful for comparison purposes!

    I would rather use km/L than L/100km

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

Blame the manufacturers for the lt/100 km unit not the metric system. To convert MPG -> LT/100KM just divide your mpg figure by 1,29. It's rather easy, or not?

Well, it is easy, but you better take about 282 and divide it by the mpg (UK) value to get l/100km.
That converts Easy's 36.7 mpg (UK) to an unbelievable 7.7 l/100km
The lowest value I have seen on my 997S was 9.9 l/100km on a 120km/h limited Autobahn trip but wasn't able to keep that till the end of the journey
The highest value I have seen was 26.9 l/100km during a 217km long trip that ended with 24.7 l/100km.
The 26.9 l/100km is the limit of the displayed long-term l/100km value (short-term value might be greater if you do a onboard computer reset during high speed driving). The actual value might be greater than that. A German paper measured 39l/100km (7 mpg (UK)) on a high speed track if doing 293km/h

    Re: Miles per UK gallon...

    Thanks Ewi for correcting me!

Actually the accurate convertion from MPG --> LT/100 KM comes if we devide 282,47 (which is the equivalent of 1 MPG in LT/100KM) by the figure we have at hand. This works the other way round either, so to convert LT/100KM --> MPG one could simply devide 282,47 by the LT/100 figure.

One way or another Easy's performance worths mentioning in The Guiness Record Book.
