Wasn't that a Swiss business man in a tuned 996 turbo which burned in the German autobahn near the border to Austria?

Yeah, that was a Sportec car. The hot exhaust ignited the rear bumper valence and the entire car burst into flames shortly thereafter - at 310 km/h .

I asked a knowledgeable F mechanic why this happens. He says it's the cats that get extremely hot and cause the fires. One of the sacrifices for a high performance engine. There are ways to cool the cats but it's expensive. He suggested the use of platinum material as a coolant. When you see these cars really blow it's usually the fuel fumes that get ignited and explode. The cats are typically below the engine which is also a problem.(more stuff to ignite) With P's the cats are off to each side. On Mercedes they've got several coolers for the cats. So, this problem is something all manufacturers face but others just have better designs to handle the high heat. Sound like not until there is some design changes it's, "burn baby burn."

PS - I don't really think that a fire extinguisher is much of a solution because you're not going to want your car smelling like an old toaster for ever even if you do manage to put one out. Probably best to just let her burn.

If this is the cause of the fires then this is shoddy engineering and Ferrari should be ashamed. There is no excuse.

    Re: Another engine caught fire

Halon 1211 gas for fire extinguishers. Don't use powders as you may cause more damage cleaning up the powder than the fire caused.

    Re: Another engine caught fire

Halon is good in that it takes away the oxygen needed for a fire to burn, however it's usually one blast and if you are still moving when it goes off, it just blows away and you'r eno better off than you were. Also if the fire is due to leaking gas and high heat, once the halon disipates, you're back with a fire on your hands...

Foam puts out the fire best, powder is the most messy.

I would think that most Ferrari owners (and other NEW exotics) would rather just watch it burn and get a new one. Saves you the constant headaches that putting out the fire gives you (corroded wires, smell, residue). Now if it's a non replacable car, you do what you have to do.
