    Re: SLR Supertest

No-one characterises the SLR as a "sports car", I never said it was a replacement for the CGT or the Zonda on order just a Mercedes alternative and one with McLaren chassis tuning and F1 know-how. Sadly, that is all that is required to sell this car. And I'm one of the saps who "fell for it".

I could swear there is a hint of jealousy in some posts, but there you go.

In your opinions, this car is a disaster/failure/obese slushbox everyday unreliable Merc.

In my view, its the fastest Mercedes, that has an AMG powerplant, and McLaren F1 know-how and looks to die for.

Can we not just leave it at that? Why do you have to INSIST on making this car look bad? Why can't you say its disappoiting for a sportscar but its still impressive?

Brand loyalty and appreciation blindess are what your posts inspire. I'm the same, except I don't make sure EVERYONE agrees with me....

ps, check out my avatar!! Ain't it the best?

Oh wait, the car has traction problems!

    Re: SLR Supertest

In my case I admit there is unbiased bitterness towards this sportcar in my posts because I was ansiously expecting another McLaren marterpiece and MB ruined it like dropping ice cubes on a fine wine. And this sportcar after all the pre-release hype and expensive materials used, etc. in the end turns out to be nothing special an certainly doesn't deserve to be placed in the supercar class, but and thats how its generally treated and regarded everyware and I beg to differ.

Instead of Mercedes-McLaren lets go to the other side of the spectrum and lets take Mercedes-Maybach, imagine if the Maybach would of come out with a jerky engine, a stiff ride and noisy interior in exchange for a bit greater sportiveness than the Rolls? ridiculous right? well thats what happened to the SLR IMO.

I think some of you don't realize how good a time of 7:52 is for a heavy lux GT is and the difference between 7:52 and 7:59 on the track is pretty big as in many car between you and them. Also who do you think will have an easier time getting the best track time on every run?

Think about this in 2000 a 360ps 996 GT3 did 7:56 and that was with Walther Rohrl at the wheel.

    Re: SLR Supertest

    7.52 is a good laptime!

But the car certainly isn't comfortable.
Very noisy inside and with a very harsh ride it's hard to market it as a GT.
If I was to cross Europe I would much rather have the SL65.
It's very comfortable and almost as fast in a straight line.

And when the sun comes out it's a cab.

That's exactly what the problem is all about: DC builds too many models, which differ too less from each other, either concerning price or overall performance (or both).
For example: SL 600 and SL 55 AMG, SL 65 and SLR, that's far too much competition within the company instead of concentrating on their rivals from other car manufacturers.

wickeddeus, nobody said it was a bad lap time, but for a $400.000 so-called "supercar", the time is disastrous, especially since a mildly modified 911 Turbo will beat that time. And with the money left over I could still buy a house, a garage for the 911 and a dog to watch over it. Besides, the SLR looks goofy, far from being a looker. I think the consensus here is: while the SLR is certainly a very capable performer it doe nothing to justify the pricetag or the hype that has been created around it.

    1 SLR
    = $400-450k

    or

    1 SL55AMG
    1 Gallardo
    1 996TT
    = $400-450k

I hear that Manthey already has a 700 AWHP power upgrade for the 996TT, which sends it flying from 0 to 200 kph in well under 9 seconds (closer to 8 actually). How's THAT for a power upgrade? But, on the other hand, I hope Mercedes make some suspension and brake changes on the power-upgraded SLR's. Remember: "POWER is nothing without CONTROL".

    Re: SLR Supertest

Totally agree w/your points. SL55 is a phenomenally great high speed GT/commuter car w/convertible appeal (big advantage in sunny climes)....and a relative bargain at $130K. SL65 just adds some muscle for autobahn bursts from 100-155MPH (not sure if ROW relevant). SLR sounds like an expensive mongrel not particularly adept at supercar/GT/commuter duty. Given most SL55 enthusiasts have other toys in garage for fun driving, I doubt SLR makes the cut. Plus, end of day, brand is important, esp if car's technology and performance is sub-class, $400K for a DC???? SLR will likely have weak resale value.

    Re: SLR Supertest

C'mon guys, the SLR delivered some pretty impressive performance figures for such a heavy car. But I find especially the 0-125 mph acceleration time to be a huge disappointment.
And of course the time on the Hockenheim Ring.

I never understood why people are buying the SLR, the SL 65 AMG is a much better buy in my eyes for half the money.
Maybe it really is the perfect "poser" car.

Don't you think a power upgrade will annoy "I already have a SLR"-customers? Or will it be available for all customers as an aftermarket option?

    Re: SLR Supertest

Wouldn't that be funny if after paying $400k+ on this car you then had to pay even more to get the full HP that becomes available right after its launch

    Re: SLR Supertest

SLR customers are used to paying extra charges. For example Euro 9k for bigger 19" rims
