VW may sell Bugatti & Lambo

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/223808/

Kind of an old news but now that Porsche is the major share holder what do you guys think?

Re: VW may sell Bugatti & Lambo

I guess it would make some economic sense.

If they re-badge their engineering efforts from say, a Lambo Gallardo to an Audi R8/R10 it would boost the image and sales of the entire Audi lineup. For a company the size of VW, Lambo sales are barely noticeable and Bugatti even less. So I surmise that they are trying reallocate their engineering resources more productively.

Re: VW may sell Bugatti & Lambo

I think selling Bugatti is a good idea. Doesn't make any sense to own them. As for Lamborghini, I think they will really suffer due to the amount of expertise VW/Audi gave them. But I do think its weird to have one company producing Porsches and Lamborghinis.

Re: VW may sell Bugatti & Lambo

Most Porsches are not direct competition for the Lambos, so why does that make sense. The turbo starts at 120K while the Gallardo starts at 160-170, thats a steep price differential from the top 911 to the base Lambo. I think performance wise they compete but in reality they don't due to the large difference in price

Just read the article, this is from January 11, and VW boss has already clarified what he meant by the statement "no toys anymore", which was a reference to the Phaeton apparently

Porsche lowers prices for you guys. The car costs at least 135.000 EURO in Europe, which is 180k and up. The difference between the GAllardo, 430 and the Turbo is truly marginal in the ROW.

Re: VW may sell Bugatti & Lambo

down here the 997TT starts at 190.000 Euros...GT3 is around 170.000 I think...Gallardo costs around 250k Euros, Murcielago 310k+, F430 200+, F599 300k+...our taxations sucks...to give you an example E46 M3 started at around 90k, the Merc E500 costs around 100k while I think I read somewhere that in the US it costs around $55k...and that's in $ not even Euros...

Wiedeking is also reportedly unhappy that Porsche is not the flagship brand in the group and has allegedly commissioned an ultra-high-performance Porsche supercar to break the top speed record set by the Bugatti Veyron.

I can not see this as being true, and I therefor allow myself to question the remainder of the article as well. What VW wants to do with Bugatti is anybody's guess, but Lambo is an improving brand. They also seem to have a good relation with Audi, and seeing how Porsche themselves has benefited from the sharing of development cost with VW it seems unlikely they will ditch the gains given to Audi and Lamborghini by their cooperation. There is no reason why Porsche and Lamborghini could not be owned by the same group, they target quite different markets. Even more now as Porsche is building car like the Cayenne, Boxster, Cayman and the upcoming Panamera. Plus, if Wiedeking is planning to sell off Bugatti, why would he be upset about them being the "flagship brand" in the group..

Re: VW may sell Bugatti & Lambo

MarcusRay, well. that sucks.. but here it's worse.
    A 911 2c starts here at about 150,000 - a 997TT is double!
The price i paid for my A3 2.0FSI (not turbo!) i could buy a brand new Boxster (Maybe even an S) in the United States and most of Europe..

I think we play this game every now and then on this forum

If I remember correctly Denmark was the last champion (maybe shared with Israel). Since then the Norwegian government has made an effort to close the gap

If you're prices are in EUR we are about even, if they are in USD we're worse..

I'm not talking about the price per se. The price is obviously relative to the country you buy it in and I totally understand your point that prices are steeper in Europe. However, as long as you are in the same country when shopping around the 'difference' in price is still essentially the same. As people have attested, the Gallardo's increase in Euros is relative to the Turbo's increase (about 50K Euro) That's about the same in difference in dollars here in the US between the two.
