Another 997 Turbo has found its home

Took delivery on Monday, about two weeks earlier than expected. The car is configured as follows: Blk/Blk, Tip, Adaptive Sport Seats/heated, Sport Chrono Package.

Went for a nice drive yesterday. Here are some initial observations:

Coming from a 2004 SL500, I can really feel and appreciate the weight difference - approximately 600lbs less! It makes the car feel much more responsive during braking and cornering. IMO MB needs to work on weight reduction rather than monsterous power.

The second thing that struck me was how effortless the car accelerates. With all its low end torque, you can slightly press the accelerator at highway speed and the Turbo will pick-up speed very quickly without even downshifting. IMO, while the break-in restriction of 4,200rpms will nevertheless be painful, the Turbo's low end power characteristics make it less so than a NA vehicle which needs more revs before anything meaningful begins to happen.

The front lip is low! Immediately touched it while exiting the dealership. Yes, they look cool lowered but beware.

After driving the SL500 for 3 years, I find the exhaust note just fine. In fact, I like hearing the turbo whine.

Tiptronic - it shifts faster than the MB and can be manually overridden even when in AUTO mode. After 8 seconds it goes back to AUTO mode. The car starts in second gear (not good) but again, you can override it by shifting down to first gear. The Tip will hold gears well under 2,000rpm, even 5th while going uphill. I find this surprising. Maybe it can do so with all its torque? I also find the downshifts smoother than the SL500, which could induce rear wheel lock-up.

The suspension/side is definitely stiffer than the SL500. While not a problem on good roads, it is very noticeable on poor road surfaces, where it also makes considerable tire/road noise.

The steering is quick/direct & precise with good weight. Caution will be needed at high speeds, however.

On a final note, I found the Adaptive Sport Seats much better than the SL500's, making up for the stiffer ride.

    Pictures to follow.

Re: Another 997 Turbo has found its home

Congrats, all us new TT guys in NY have to get together for a group rennteam pic one day!

Re: Another 997 Turbo has found its home

No doubt 997TT Tip/PCCB is one of world's 5 best cars today...esp its steering, PCCB and wet weather trac...congrats

Prob don't want to compare 5yo SL500 tech to 997TT; different tech era/different buyer base

OTOH, you may be quite surprised by relative abilities of 4000lb 599 or 4900lb CL600 (and esp by 4600lb CL63 upon US launch in next 1-2mos ) when doing back-to-back drives vs 3600lb 997TT on both urban fwys and mtn twisties.....where turbo lag; high-speed stability vs bumpy US fwys (and cross-winds); chassis damping/balance vs bumpy twisties; paddleshifter trannies; exhaust note charisma, etc are closely compared....the subjective results may surprise, esp given the varying wts involved, despite similar buyer bases of >30yo, elder statesmen, who need a car that's presentable at the office pkg garage....

Know several jaded guys who marveled 5 yrs ago re: amazingly comparable/complementary abilities of 4400lb SL55 vs 3200lb 360 in twisties.....today, those same guys are eager to compare their 4000lb 599 vs 4600lb CL63 in twisties......aren't tech advances in today's P/F/MB great fun to compare/contrast?

Re: Another 997 Turbo has found its home

Thanks for a nice informative post, mp. Very helpful as I get ready to spec my 997 TT. My local MB dealer is trying to woo me away, I took an E 63 for a drive last week and tomorrow I'm taking a CLK 63 for a LONG test. Nice cars but no cigar I'm thinking. Maybe in 10 years time when I am an old(er) f*rt? Congrats on your new baby, hope you enjoy to the max.

Re: Another 997 Turbo has found its home

Congrats - I especially like the 2 weeks earlier part!

Yes, this is a geat time to be a car enthusiast!

In regards to a vehicle's weight, I believe Mr.Gordon Murray (McLaren F1 fame - 1137kg) is a big believer of the "less weight" theory. Ring times prove him right. Best times are those of lighter cars - found an SL55AMG posting 8'08" time (not that good).

However, you are correct, generally speaking even 4,000+lb cars can now be made to handle very well. Probably as well as anyone of us can use on public roads. I just think MB isn't trying hard enought to keep weight down.

In addition, I believe you have repeatedly mentioned the frustration with MB's lack of traction, which is another issue of theirs.

Hope you're still enjoying the 599?

Re: Another 997 Turbo has found its home

    MP,

Congrats. Keep us informed as to your impressions with the tip. I'm particularly interested in post breakin impressions. BTW, w/o dropping the hammer, how is the power from a stoplight ? When you hit the sport button is it a much better driver ? How is the passing power when entering freeway (ie. LIE from service road, etc.). Good luck with it and lets see some pictures.

I find it absolutely effortless to enter freeway in a 997TT tip as you can just hammer without worrying about traction, unlike a powerful rear wheel drive car. You don't need to even watch the tach as the car will shift for you.

It's really a lot of fun as one downshifts a gear or two, check traffic and then go at warp speed.

Haven't yet opened her up but I can assure you that even half throttle at ANY rpm will be sufficient to drop most anyone. Yes, there is turbo lag below 3,000 rpm but it's no more than other turbos. The car has so much torque, it just makes power effortlessly. Makes the break-in less painful.

As for the acceleration from a dead stop, not good as the car starts in 2nd gear (lame!) but you can override it without having to place the TIP in manual mode - just press the gear selector.

To activate Sport Mode you must first reach 3,300+rpm, then the fun begins: faster shifts, car starts in 1st gear, throttle response becomes MUCH MORE immediate etc.

IMO the whole TIP thing has gotten a bit of a bad rap and that's O.K. - we all have our opinions, needs and preferences. Some say it's Not sporty, not for real enthusiasts etc. Well, most Ferrari's, Lambo's, M5/M6's on the road don't have 6-sp manuals either. Yes, the TIP is not a sequential transmission, still shifting-up too slow, but you can't ignore its advantages - smooth in traffic, downshifts automatically.

Will provide more detail once the car is broken-in. Hope you will like it as well?
