First of all the V8 is 15kg lighter than the previous straight six in the E46 M3, and secondly it still ends up being cheap compared to a 911.

In the UK a an E92 M3 with the right options will be Pounds55k, a 997 C2S will cost Pounds67k + cPounds7k for options, resulting in a price of Pounds74k. Nearly Pounds20k difference still sounds like a bargain to me.

What do you consider 'the right options'...?

The RS4 was specced standard as such that you only had to add the tech pack really. I haven't studied the new M3 spec list but at first glance the must have seems to be 19s...and what else?

You are absolutely right and to be honest the E36 is my prefered M3 design. Very subtle,everything is in the details. In addition after 11 years of ownership the car is still a fantastic drive. I feel much more connected to the road in my E36 than in my E46 (despite the competition package) and this is definitely a key parameter in the driving pleasure. Lets see how the E92 feels... from a design standpoint I am not totally convinced (but other brands are not better, I think car design is currently going through a crisis )

Hmm... Not sure about that prices...

Here are the prices from Germany(incl. 19% Mwst), all cars with allmost the same specs:

Audi S5 66.500Euro
Audi RS4 Saloon 84.400Euro
BMW 335i Coupe(manual) 58495Euro
BMW M3 Coupe 85450Euro
Porsche 997 Carrera Coupe 101.100Euro
Porsche 997 Carrera S Coupe 107.200Euro

Explanation-335i is with all normal options available except BMW Individual
-M3/RS4 you should add around 2000Euro for official factory delimiting
-997 models-here is the catch-this is the real difference in price with THE SAME options...

BTW, I did not include Cayman S but, its price is around 91000Euro is same specs...

mercedes prices have gone mad in the past few years. Bmw seems to have increased it's prices a lot lately too. Audis are still cheaper but cars are getting more and more expensive.

The worst is that no one seems to complain anymore. If the M3's price is 66K, it's 10k more than it used too. 10k/56k (old M3), that's a 17% increase.

Thanks. So I guess I can expect the M3 to be priced somewhere between a Cayman S and RS4. Guess I can accept that seeing that the M3 will already come with sat nav, tv, bi-xenons etc. The more I am getting used to the looks the more I am thinking of getting one! Anyone heard anything about its Ring time yet??? Surely it would be as quick as a 997C2?

Car is a BMW which unfortunately means having to use a BMW dealer. So on the basis of my last apalling experience, which left my BMW broken down 24 hours after a minor service (brake fluid change) in the middle of nowhere with my wife on her own means I won't be going for one. Or any other BMW.

1655 kg (with 75 kg driver) means 3470 lbs if that's with all fluids then not bad RELATIVE to E46

I agree, however, those are the Euro specs, US cars may weigh a bit more (as they usually do)...

The new M3 is much cooler and rawer than the old M3 E46. M3 E46 still has an elegant design but nowhere as cool or raw as the new M3..

Only a fool would buy a M3 E46 over a M3 V8 if money wasnt an object.

It has been on BMWs for years now. It's just a sensor that relays the how heavily the driver brakes to the way the brake lights come on. So a gentle braking illuminates them in a normal fashion, whereas a heavy braking episode brightens them even further.
