Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

It was so painful to see your pics. I'm so sorry to see what happened. I hope it all works out well for you soon and with the minimum hassle.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

John, often neck and back pain do not manifest themselves until a few days after the accident. Are you sure your neck and back don't hurt.

Also, did you have to pay a deductible given you were not at fault?

Shrink, once John's insurance company pays the claim for the collison damage they will have subrogation rights against the woman. The fact that she is not now financially able to pay does not matter. They probably will get a judgment against her. It is good for at least 10 years. Who knows, she may win a lottery.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

I feel your pain. Be it as you described, the truck behind you was probably too close - a real problem here in the Bay Area.

Nick, I know what subrogation is. I think you missed my point. Somebody that irresponsible to not have insurance is going to become responsible now and pay for the damages? I highly doubt John's insurace will ever see a dime from that woman. Also, do you really think the insurance is going to waste their time and resources when they're better spent on cases that they can easily and successfully subrogate? Think about it.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

Typically insurance carriers have agreements with collection attorneys paying them anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3 of the recovery. The attorneys do plenty of work for the carries. So even if there is no recovery in sight, the collection attorney will still take the case in order to preserve his continued working relationship with the carrier. In this case, after John's carrier pays him, they'll simply turn the matter over to their collection attorney. The most they will pay will be court expenses -filing fees, etc. The attorney will get a quick judgement against the our lovely driver. If California requires proof of financial responsibility in order to obtain driving privileges, our sweet miss will be walking until she satisfies the judgement. At least, that's how it works in NH.

As all are agreed, the good thing here is that John wasn't physically hurt. So John, my recommendation would be to get the car fixed properly, go for a long drive and put this right where it blongs, well behind you.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

Believe me. She will keep driving without insurance and/or license. That is just fact of life.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

There are some real crazy people out there

Good YOU did not get hurt.

Maybe you could now put the new back lights that are all read, without the white strip . That would at least give you one good thing about this sad event.

Dropped the car off at the body shop

First glance he said $10k and 2 weeks at least.

We pried open the engine cover and the bumper is so smashed forward that the clasp to hold the deck lid down has smashed against the airbox cracking it. I thought the exhaust sounded throatier.... anyway so at least a cracked airbox in the engine dept. They gave me a Jag to drive which is nice - but no place to put the mountain bike !

So all the insurance talk - My insurance co is going to pay out of my uninsured motorist coverage. If I try to claim agains the guy who was directly behind me, then they would just deny coverage and say it was the crackhead in the van's fault anyway. So I'm not going to bother.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

Sorry John, but the cops should have arrested you for cruelty to your Porsche. The paint is swirl city. If you are going to get a black car, then you need to learn how to maintain it. And the swirls are pretty apparent just from the flash of your camera. I can just imagine how bad it looks in direct sunlight. Hopefully, you take your car to a really good body shop who will buff out your car properly and get rid of the swirls.

Re: Dropped the car off at the body shop

John, which shop did you take your car to get it fix?

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

Dayyyaaam..You gotta move out of that place man. Really sucks. But glad you are ok. Car will get fixed, should be fine in the end (pun intended).

I saw that in the photos as well, hence my mention that after the repairs were done, the WHOLE CAR would need intensive paint attention...

John, driving's great and all, but a warrior takes pride in, and care of, his weapon. and the "I bought it to drive" line is always a convenient excuse for "I'm too lazy/indifferent to bother".....

Yes, I'm a neat-freak jerk-off, but what can I say, I was brought up to take care of everything I own, my tools, my cars, my everything, as if I could be broke tomorrow and my possessions were all I had left.... End of irritating and unsolicited preaching...

If you don't enjoy the upkeep, pay somebody good to do it for you. It won't get in the way of your driving enjoyment, it'll enhance it. Nothing wrong with that...

Actually some waxes will hide the defects. I am talking about how to wash the car without instilling swirls in the first place. It really does not take any more effort not to add swirls.

The other day I saw this guy in a fairly new Vanquish or DB9. It was black and the car was clean. Unfortunately, he car was swirl city and the car looked horrible in sunlight.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

I live in the city and don't even have a hose to wash the car myself... so I have to take it to the car wash... that's where the swirls come from I think.... I actually just had it hand waxed at a local place a week before the accident.. I think I'll take it to a professional detail place when the damage is all fixed.

I take care of my toys, but I think it's just a matter of degree. My car is always clean but I'm not a freak about it mostly becuase I'm not set up to be.... I think if I had a house and a driveway and hose and a nice garage I'd be more into it... And the local places just don't do such a great job....

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

Car washes are rough on paint, for sure... But I understand your limitations.

Finding a good detailer is like finding an honest A/C repairman....

Given the limitations of your location, I'd suggest a lighter color for your cars...

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

John, there's a detail shop in SF financial district (based in Howard St. garage...can't recall name off-hand) that does lots of P/F/MB in fin dt (while one is in-office...they do a lot of the cars in the high-rent office garage spots@1 Mkt, etc where pkg valets have keys to the cars)....they seem to handle blk P/F/MB very well ....suspect there are many guys in fin dt who value their time too much to clean own cars/houses, but would rather pay someone competent to do it....

Never been in collision....but part of why I choose to commute via <6 mo 997/CL is, when accident occurs, want maximal, latest/greatest-tech active/passive safety to protect self from any injury....any car is disposable/rapidly obsoleting anyway.....always amusing when some guys advocate driving a "beater" car; hopefully, one's safety/health is worth a few more dollars than any car ....and all my cars are $0 down leased, w/lease gap insurance...so total loss w/no injuries is best outcome for me, short of active safety (w/car's brakes/handling, etc) preventing any collision.....

Also have intra-SF <5mi daily commute....my near-misses aren't in City...they're typically on wkends in mtn twisties, where despite conservative driving, well within own lane, will suddenly find an oncoming SUV/Volvo/Audi (???) casually straddling middle of two-laner@45MPHish....they don't hand out cars like those to just anybody....

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

John, I really don't know -probably even you don't know right now- when the house of your dreams will come into your life that among others will let you personally take care of your P-car detailing.

By then this is a nice thread as to start reading about proper DIY washing/cleaning/polishing/waxing. IAC it will also help you become more knowledgeable on how to check the quality of the services the pros are offering to you and your beauty.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

My old 986 was rear ended about a year ago, much less damage than yours (cracked rear light lense, bumper cover ripped), cost $3000 which my insurance co. paid less the $500 deductable. They've been trying to collect from the van that hit me for the year, and are just getting nowhere.

I have an appointment at the body shop this afternoon. I can't open the engine compartment because the deck lid is bent.. but the car seems to be running fine. I'm not so worried about a perfect repair, just the hassle of having a rental and waiting etc etc... it's just a pain in the ass..... Also - It's a LEASE... I WAS thinking of buying the car at the end of the lease - but no more - Now I'll get a new one !!!

You're better off because it is a lease. If it was financed you would be the one hurt in the re-sale value.

The fact that it's leased won't help. Upon lease turn-in, the car will be inspected for all types of damage, especially evidence of accident repair, which they will find no matter how well the repair is done. They will most certainly devalue the car appropriately and he will have to pay for the loss of value out of his pocket (or buy the car). I've been through all this before.

    Re: Insurance said----

My 996 was rear ended twice & I rear ended someone in that car. So it had 2 new rear bumpers and a new front bumper - a lease inspector came to my garage and gave the car a 10 min once over. Then I turned the car in and walked away.....

    Re: Insurance said----

    Sorry for your loss.

Looks like you get rear ended alot in San Fran your 997 and twice in your 996, must be all those hills.

Seriously I can't imagine what you are going through, I just curbed my rear wheel and was depressed for 2 days and wanted to replace the whole wheel even though the scratch is repairable.

On top of all this the taxpayers are going to have to pay for her rehab, defense, and incarceration which will undoubtly be more than fixing your car. We should lock the crack ho up in a room with all the crack she needs to smoke herself to death. Because when she gets out she'll just do the same thing again and waste all our time and energy.

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

Sorry to hear, and see, that John. Hope it works out for you.

I've always wondered what happens to those who get hit by these idiots you see on Cops and other shows, who think they can outrun the police. I guess now we'll know

Re: My 911 Rear Ended and smashed..... PICS

So, my daughter pulls out of a parking lot in 2002 while driving my son's car. Dude comes up 57 St in Manhattan on a bike well in excess of the speed limit and hits her A4 hard enough to turn it 90 degrees. The expert witnesses differ on Dude's speed, it was either in the mid 40s (police), above 50 (defense) or in the 30s (plaintiff). He broke the frame on his bike, and left a skid mark more than 40 feet long. The speed limit is 25 mph. Slam on your brakes at 25mph and see how far you go on a bike; it won't be that far.

There's a U-Haul truck legally double parked (yes, it's legal while you're loading or unloading) while someone loads their stuff to move to California which the Dude had to pass on his way to crashing into my daughter.

After a trial in which he is found partially responsible for the accident, but where both U-Haul and my kids are also found responsible, he collects 10 big bucks from U-Haul (not the driver who rented the truck) and small bucks from my son's insurance company.

    It's really unbelievable.

The best part of the whole deal is my daughter wasn't injured, although her faith in the justice system was shattered.

Just a quick thanks for all the support

It's nice to hear all the kind words.

Latest is they are still working on tearing the car down to make an estimate. I'm guessing another 3 weeks before it's close to being done.

I'll report back then with before and after pics !

Re: Just a quick thanks for all the support

Hi John, this is your neighbor. I'm glad your ok and feel for you having to go through all of this BS because of an idiotic, irresponsible persons mistake. This is the first time I read this post and wondered why I havent seen you in a while. Business is slow for me this time of year with the rains. I'll have a chat next time we see each other. Let me know if you need anything. Hope the car repair goes smoothly and your back driving your black beauty soon! You brought it to the right place to be fixed. Take care.

Re: Just a quick thanks for all the support

Yikes, seems like it is taking a long time. Hope things progress smoothly and at a rapid pace.

My wife was just rear-ended Friday night on her way home from work. Stopped behind an 18-wheeler at a light on the interstate off-ramp and someone looked like they didn't even hit the brakes. She ended up with a sore neck which hopefully will not linger too long. For the car, it pushed her into the truck in front putting a hole in the front trunk and bumper. Rear bumper is pushed in, but the exhaust actually looks intact.
