Gas mileage on a manual 997

According to specs, 997s should get somewhere around 19 mpg city and 26 mpg hwy. Mine is getting somewhere around 12 mpg city and 22 mpg hwy. Should I be concerned about engine tuning or is this just normal?

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Your right foot is normal, that's all.
If you are getting 26+ then you just are not having fun!
Given your reporting of 12 you may be in danger of losing your licence.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

12/22 suggests a hypertrophic right foot.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Well, sometimes is hard to resist, but seriously, with "normal" driving conditions, should I be concerned about this or not?

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

The car gets better fuel consumption when it is broken in. How many miles do you have on your car?

As a point of reference, my car, which is a 2005 with 25,000Km (~15,500miles) averages about 12l/100km (~19.5mpg). This is a combination of city and highway. On a long highway cruise at 135km/hr(~80mph) i see about 9.2L/100 (25.5mpg).

With the sport button on in the twisty mountain roads, with heavy acceleration and braking, well the milage drops dramatically to about 16l/100(~15mpg). But this is what the car is for!

One thing I have noticed with friends, is that cars that burn little or no oil burn less fuel than the cars that burn oil. In my case, after the first 6000km my oil consumption has droppped to almost zero.

    Does your car consume oil?

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

If this is of any use as a guide line, I am getting 19-21 on a 50-50 mix of city highway driving. However with only 700 mi. on the clock I am still faithfully observing the usual break-in tips.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Your mpg is all dependent on your driving style. The stated mpg are in ideal driving conditions and I'm sure with a driver trained to get the most mpg. Yours does seem a little low but I would guess you drive it hard.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Mine has almost 8000 miles on it. It doesn't burn oil. I don't drive it hard (sometimes one can't resist to push it a little) and my daily drive is about 60 miles hwy and 10 miles city.

I admit to driving my 911S a bit easier, and if I am doing driving on a freeway (I do mostly highway driving), I average 20-21 mpg. If I am doing some spirited driving in the country (few stops, if any), I get about 18 mpg, sometimes less. I regularly use Shell V-Power 93 octane premium, and I have a bit less than 7,000 miles on my car. Are you using a good brand of gasoline? I was getting lower mileage with other brands of premium.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Unless you suspect engine trouble, why bother thinking about MPG? We all spent around us$100K on a _car_; a car that is not sold by virtue of it's fuel efficiency.

My point? As long as gas is _available_ for purchase things are good.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

I get 18-21. My very best has been 22, which involved mostly highway driving. This is a regular Carrera and there are very few roads where I live that can be driven fast.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

I'm not really concerned about gas consumption. Just wanted to know if my car was OK or if some tuning was needed. This is my first Porsche and I didn't know if getting 65% from specs was "normal" or not. From what I'm gathering here, I think it's just fine. I do use mostly good quality gasoline like Shell or BP.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Oh, the other thing you guys should consider:

The car has very high torque and HP. This means you can cruise at a much lower RPM (compared to what you may be used to in a "normal" car). Lower RPM means better gas economy.

My bet is you "gas guzzlers" are doing stuff like 55mph on a level surface at too-high rpms (i.e. in the wrong gear).

If you can get the car to move at 55mph at 2000 rpms do it (just guessing, never paid explicit attention).

How do I know this? Here's one clue, my o4 M3 with SMG on "automatic" is going 60 mph at some "incredibly" low RPM (like 1900). So a similar HP/tq engine's computer is doing very low RPMs.

Would be nice to know what Tiptronic's computer likes to cruise at... , anybody with a Tip listening?

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

The EPA ratings which say 19-26 are notoriously overstated - there's no way to actually achieve what these tests claim in the real world. The best you can do is use them to compare different cars. A car with EPA 19-26 will probably get better milage than one wtih 15-22, but neither will get what is listed.

This year the EPA has revamped their scale in an attempt to make the published numbers closer to reality, but we'll all have to see.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Tire inflation may have some bearing, albeit minor.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

My 997s has about 1800 mi on it I was getting 16mpg on the intial couple of fill ups( combined city and highway) more recently I am getting about 17.5 to 18 mpg, on strict highway I can average 24-25mpg. I had to put about 1/4 liter of oil so far.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Just reset the computer when you get on the highway and see what you get. Cruising at 60 (without still accelerating) in 6th will get you 25-27 mpg especially in FL...I've done it. I averaged 15-16 for the first month but rarely used 5th or 6th gear. Now with 34,000 miles I average 18-20 on my 30 mile (ea. way) commute which is mostly 40-70 mph big curve fun backroads with few stops and one section where I sometimes do 100 and once did 135.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

I get 14 or so with city driving and short trips(4 miles) to work. The worst possible combination.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

My worse case mileage is about 14 when I'm hard accelerating at every opportunity. My best is about 25 mpg when on the freeways and doing a cruise-controlled 70 mph for long stretches.

When in Europe for 3200 miles (breaking in the engine) I wound up averaging 19.5 mpg,--and that included some times in the upper end of the engine's capabilities (i.e., 180 mph). If you don't see some improvement by 10,000 ask your dealer what might be the problem.

    Dan

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

On pure highway, I can get about 26 mpg.
City / short trip is about 14mpg.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

    Nat:
I don't drive a 997, but let me just tell you that you should never pay much attention to the specs/EPA ratings. These numbers aren't realistic, they are only for the purpose of comparison. In Europe, and I assume in the US too, these figures are achieved by putting the cars through a driving cycle with little acceleration in a laboratory environment, not in the real world with real drivers.

There is nothing wrong with your car if you can't achieve the same or close to the EPA rating (none of my cars ever have), even after completed break in. But when the car is fully broken in you are going to see a slight improvement in both gas milage and performance.

Sure, I understand that. I was concerned only because it was way below specs, much lower than other cars I currently have (but not comparable with a P.). I guess as someone said before, my right foot is quite normal.

I'd be more worried if it wasn't

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Watch your RPMs. If they go over 4K then all the horses in your engine need to be feed and they get thirsty.

I can get 32 mpg. I don't like it because I have to use the cruise control. Normally I get 19 to 20 mpg.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

The best I've done on a real trip was about 24 mpg on a 420 mile round trip, about 60% interstate highway, the rest 2 lane state roads. Cruise control on the interstate, smooth driving on the state roads.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

I'll admit it; I'm a tight SOB (but have to balance that with having fun), so on long journeys on the Continent where the Polis are particularly active such as France or - worse - Belgium, I go around 80 or so in 6th. On those journeys I can get 27+MPG. If I'm feeling *really* tight, then I turn the aircon off and that seems to give a couple more mpg or so.

On the other hand on the German Autobahns, I don't even bother to check!

In town MPG performance is rubbish - driving in low gear kills this area of performance so I get 19-21 or so.

Nat, as MMD says even if your right foot is "normal" it seems like you might be in too low a gear for your long runs, as your urban driving MPG seems standard.

From what you say I'm pretty sure your car's fine - anyway MPG is not a particluarly great indicator of technical troubles, smoke in the rear view mirror is!

    Cheers.

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

My old BMW had a fuel consumption rate guage in the instrument cluster. It was a great way for "novices" to learn how to drive economically; I wonder why BMW dropped the ball and stopped putting them in cars?

Anyway, I should be used to it by now but I'm still amazed how low my current M3's engine computer will allow the RPMs to go then the SMG is in auto.

What about you Carrera __Tip__ owners? Anybody out there? Would be great to know how low Porsche lets the RPMs drop for these engines... .

Re: Gas mileage on a manual 997

Yeah, I reckon you can take the engine even in 6th to as low as 12-1300RPM or so befor it starts lugging - on the flat anyway. Also I seem to have read somewhere that at cruising speeds the X51 upgrade gives much better MPG, perhaps because of the better low end HP / Torque performance - anyone have any experience of this?

I was thinking the same question the other day, as none of my current vehicles has this. I think that the so-called instantanious reading is so inaccurate that it's an embarrassment, so that may be why they dropped it.
