    Leather conditioner...

I've tried Lexol, Meguiar's, Griot's Garage leather conditioners and was never happy, as they all leave a lot to be desired. They tend to leave a sticky/shiny feel and the leather surface does not feel natural.

To resolve an issue with some fine leather furniture, I came across Advanced Leather Solutions http://www.advleather.com, located in Hayward, CA. They are leather specialists recommended by high-line stores like Roche Bobois. They understand leather and they developed their own leather treatment chemistry.

I started using their leather conditioner-protector SG25 and love it. Very easy to apply (just a little dab applied with a slightly moist cotton rag) and the surfaces come to life, soft, smooth and sticky free. Highly recommended.

    Re: Leather conditioner...

Where do you get it? I've used Lexol conditioner sparingly and have not had problems with it.

    Re: Leather conditioner...

I bought it from their shop in Hayward. I guess they sell online or by phone.

    Re: Leather conditioner...

    Innovative approach, yet quite unorthodox.

What I'd suggest is you give a try to products originally designed for car leather treatment. Car leathers have to withstand considerably higer thermal loads compared to our home sofas, let alone the dustier and dirtier environment where thery are exposed to.

www.swisswax.com is a well-known, established since the 30s, car detailing brand with excellent results at least on the interior of my P-car.

    Re: Leather conditioner...

Be careful with what you use; do the research. There was a story a while back where well-meaning (not very experienced?) detail shop put the wrong conditioner on "painted" leather (the stock stuff we have) and turned it into a gooey mess.

Me personally? Unless your use is extreme, there's no _need_ for conditioner until a few more years pass on these cars. Just wipe with damp terry towel; turning frequently. Maybe use the leather cleaner sparingly if needed.

If my seats were hairy or furry I for sure would use 'SwissWax' as well.

My leather has been shaved so they don't need a waxing. LOL

    Oooops! Wrong url

Sorry for misleading you, it's my fault anyway. Pls click through the following

    Its' swissvax instead of swisswax!

    Re: Leather conditioner...

I continue to use Connolly Hide Food as well as some other special stuff out of England. So far no issues,--with natural brown leather.

    Re: Leather conditioner...

This may not apply to the "natural leather" options, but I believe that most all automotive dyed leathers are treated with an invisible polymer-coating, which means in basic terms, you're sitting on leather that's coated with a microscopic layer of plastic. Over time, this layer can break down, but it greatly extends the endurance and lifespan of the leather.

Leather used for fine furniture and/or fine clothing/accessories is typically prepared differently, and has differing care requirements...

I pulled this text off of the I.M. Kelly website:

To most people 'leather is leather'. However if you think about the different uses for leather you will realise that the leather used for a handbag would be very different from the leather used in a luxury car. Even the leather used on furniture is unlikely to have the intensive wear and environmental challenges required of automotive leather.

Automotive leather has to withstand the wear and tear of clothing plus the effects of skin oils, sweat and even hair preparations in addition to the different temperatures and climate conditions across the world.

The development and production of automotive leather is a specialisation, and different types of leather are required for each type of vehicle. Leather used for a sports model with a firm seat that grips the driver is different from a luxury limousine. Automotive leather requires a high degree of knowledge and craftsmanship to transform it from a natural product into a high quality interior.

You can gather by insinuation, that there's alot of preparation and treatment going on with automotive leather, meaning that any "conditioner" you may use needs to be aimed at bolstering the health of the top surface, not the leather trapped underneath.

Myself? I've had the best luck doing what MMD does. Slightly damp towel OFTEN... Do not allow bodily oils and salts to remain on the surface of your seats for extended periods, wipe your seats often, keep them clean. That's it... Then, as long as you treat your interior gently, and don't murder your bolster on ingress/egress, you're good. My car is over 2 years old now, the leather looks no different than the day I bought it, and it's never seen a single "conditioner". Similarly, I've never applied any CLEANER to it either, as most cleaners are aggressive and will prematurely eliminate your protective coating. Drives me crazy when people toss soaps and chemicals where simple water is adequate.

The less crap you rub and scrub into your seats, the longer they'll last in my experience. I have to use fine conditioners on my antique cars, as the leathers are not protected whatsoever. But on modern stuff, it's a different strategy. If you do have to use a cleaner (grease), use a very soft cleaner.

For the rest of the interior, which really only gets "dusty", again, juts a very slightly damp towel is all I ever do. Don't use a cleaner to "dust" forchrisake. I love it when people get in my car for the first time, and ask me if I just bought it....

    Re: Leather conditioner...

While we're at it: Watch your a** when getting into the car seat!!! For instance, it's amazing how many otherwise immaculate pre-owned Ferraris I've looked at that are ruined in this way:

    Re: Leather conditioner...

Good incentive to stay in shape, so you can still perform the gymnastic maneuver around the side bolster..

Speaking of that line of logic, I've always felt that keeping my car nicely detailed, and doing it often, is a great assist in keeping me thin.... A good inside-out detailing is a great workout when you approach it like you're racing the clock (as I usually am..)

    Re: Leather conditioner...

What's the color of your leather interior? Dark- or light-colored?

Although a slightly damp towel is a good option for frequently cleaning your leather interior, from time to time you'll notice that's not enough. In such (rare) cases use leather cleaners containing biodegradable active ingredients in pH neutral formula that's enriched with glycerine. This 'liquid leather soap' has the extra cleaning power for outperforming almost any of the hardest situations might come up.

Regardless you're using just a moisturized towel or a pH neutral cleaner you'll definitevely need the supportive action of a decent milk (conditioner) as to give your leather the moisture it requires.

These steps are quite enough. Your main effort should concentrate in maintaining your interior in 'as new' condition. In that sense try to stay away from leather dyes, glazes or correctors, unless your leather condition matches the Ferrari's one that MMD posted above.

    LOL.

What I do is put my left hand on the bolster (left hand drive) then back my a** into the seat without it touching my hand.

    Whatever works... .

    Re: Leather conditioner...

    I really like Zaino.
    Wipe it on , done.
And I love the "new leather" smell .

Did you say leather smell? Here ya go, it's NOT cr*p either. (I hate cheap stuff and all scents in personal and cleaning products of all kinds).
