    Copying MP3s - Help, please!!

Firstly I am the original IT dinosaur, so if you can help, the answer in simple-speak, please!

Right, I can copy from music CD's to Windows Media Player, where all the CD titles are recognised and then I can burn the tracks I want on to a CD-RW. The CD RW plays in the PCM fine, but doesn't show or recognise the track titles. How do I transfer the album / artist / track details so this info shows up in the PCM display

Your help much appreciated, guys, thanks!

Re: Copying MP3s - Help, please!!

I know this isn't what you're looking for but if there was only one advise I could offer you change WMP either to iTunes or RealPlayer would be it.

Think it again, totally hassle-free burning with all of your features required at the touch of some buttons.

Re: Copying MP3s - Help, please!!

Get a free download of iTunes. This information is for the iTunes version compatible with a Windows PC. In the "Edit" section, click on the "Advanced" tab. Then click on the "Importing" tab. Select MP# format and the speed for importing - the highest or custom speed is best but there is a tradeoff in the amount of songs one disc can hold. Once you have done that, click on the "Burning" tab, and select the MP3 format and select maximum speed.

That should do it. And you get pretty good MP3 discs, too. I have one, with about 8 and 3/4 hours of songs on it, although I didn't use the highest quality (I used "higher quality").

A program like MP3TAG should do what you want. I am not saying this is the best program on the market but it should be enough information to get you going. The URL to that program is: http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

One more observation, question. It is possible that you are burning the songs to the CD-RW as an AUDIO cd (one that would play in a CD player) and not as a MP3/WMV data cd (one that would NOT play in a regular CD player). An AUDIO cd will not have any track information associated with it as it is just a stream of zeros and ones that represent music. The data file MP3/WMV contains the bits for the music along with meta information that the PCM reads and displays on the screen.

Can you find the songs that you imported into your Windows Media Player on your computer's hard drive? If you can, are they .MP3 or .WMV extensions or are they something like .WAV or other?

Re: Copying MP3s - Help, please!!

I feel your pain dreamcar as I have experienced the SAME problem using Windows MediaPlayer. I have resisted switching to iTunes thus far because I've gotten so used to MediaPlayer over the years. Based on Jim48's post, I think I'll make the switch now. Good luck . . . to both of us.

Re: Copying MP3s - Help, please!!

iTunes is REALLY easy to use. Just download and install; when you pop a CD in the drive, Windows will probably try and start Windows Media; cancel that and start iTunes instead. It will look up the track names just like WM and then load the files into a database it keeps. After you've loaded up a bunch of songs, you can burn them as MP3s to a CD and play them all in your Porsche. On the PCM, each album will show as a 'folder', and all the titles will be there.

The only down side is that there's no real random feature on the PCM; it just has one alternate sequence which it always uses.

At standard compression, an MP3 is about 128kbps. That provides about a 10x reduction in file size. Thus you can fit approximately 10 (full, 72 minute) standard music CDs on one MP3 CD. You usually can do much better, since most CDs are not actually full.

As for the quality, try different qualities and see if you can hear it (blank disks are under a buck). You may not be able to, as a Porsche is not as quiet as your living room.

Speaking from Mac experience with iTunes I found NO way to have iTunes place folders on the MP3 CD. To do that I used the "finder" to create folders and placed the MP3 files in there. I then took all of the folders I wanted and burned them to a CD. I did find it helpful to rename the mp3 files with the track number as the prefix to keep the tracks in album order. Otherwise the songs get burned in alphabetical order.

For example a track that used to be called "Juicy.mp3" is now "03 Juicy.mp3", as it will display as the third track.

I can understand how this all may sound convoluted but give it a try, after a few disk burns you will realize what we all mean. The first test would be to see how many songs you can actually get on your CD. If it is somethine like 15-20 average pop songs then it appears your software is burning an audio cd. Check the program preferences to see if you can turn on "data cd" or "mp3 cd", or switch to something like iTunes, or browse your harddrive to find the actual MP3 files and then drag them to folders you create and then burn all of that. With that you will get the track informtion and the ability to store 100s of songs on each CD.

Re: Copying MP3s - Help, please!!

Many thanks for your advice, one and all, much appreciated. Yes, I'm burning audio CD as I'm only getting 20 tracks on a disc. That much I've learned. I'll try some of your tips and see how I get on.

Re: Copying MP3s - Help, please!!

Sussed it. Trying to burn discs on Windows Media Player 9.0, as installed when I bought my PC. Just downloaded (free) Media Player 11 from Microsoft and voila! Dead easy. Now happily recording MP3, all music info displaying on the PCM. As with most things, easy when you know how. Once again, many thanks guys!

Re: Copying MP3s - Help, please!!

Within the PCM settings, there is a random play function, not tested it on the MP3 disc myself as yet though.

Yes there is, but there is only one "random" sequence! It's not really random at all - each time you select random, you will get the same sequence of songs, starting at the beginning. Since computer scientists developed good randomization routines in the 1960s, this is really appalling engineering.
