Were you going to buy a 911?

The popular wisdom is that if the cayman is TOO good, it will steal sales from the 911. It seems Porsche made the cayman pretty darned good, if not quite with the same grunt.

Was anyone here going to buy a 911, but instead decided on a cayman? Just curious.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

I went the other way around. I was intending to buy the Cayman but after test driving both extensively back to back decided that the big brother was the one for me.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

No, never even considered a 911....much less fun to drive than a Cayman IMO....

At least here in the US more than a few 911s are falling prey to the Cayman.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

    Fun is all relative.
I come from mid-engine setup. I think it's great and easy to go fast. But I have much more "FUN" with the 911...
    It's a matter of taste :-)

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

I was. I drove an 05 997 and drove the Cayman S for comparison. On the same turns, it made the 997 feel like a sedan rather than a sports car. I did notice quite a power difference but I can't realistically use the power here in the NYC area.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

I was going to get a 997 CS but after test driving the Cayman S I have to agree with MikeN, I found the Cayman a lot more fun and compact, almost go-kart like. And I don't need those rear seats.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

Not the 911, but was considering a GT3. But combination of mid-engine coupe and Porsche was too strong to pass up. Test drove another GT3 soon after taking delivery of my Cayman S and have not regretted my purchase. Cheers.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

    ME

I was going to get a 997S and decided it simply was not worth the extra money and was "too big" ... whereas a Mid-engined CS was much more a real sportscar in the traditional sense ...

BTW, I have owned a 911 so I'm not dissing them, just more fun driving a CS.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

Ive tried 997 and Cayman S, and driving Cayman S was more fun.. In CaymanS I already felt "like at home" after a few kilometers, so it was easy to drive it like a gokart from beggining. 997 feels much havier and bigger, and I couldnt drive it like Cayman - mybie I would need much more time to adapt..

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

I bought an '06 911 S but have just traded it in on an '07 Cayman S. Don't get me wrong, the 911 S was the best car I've ever owned, but the Cayman S is a blast in a different way. Very different cars. We'll see what I trade for next year...

    Need to change the avatar!

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

Sold a 911 to buy the Cayman, best car I've ever owned so far. (Until I get the 997GT3)

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

    .....needed those rear seats.....

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

i drove both, decided for the CaymanS. was basically more fun and more exclusive.

More exclusive than a 911? First time I heard that.
I'm waiting for a 300+ hp cayman with PDK. That's going to be the most fun Porsche.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

No, I always thought the 911 butt was ugly. The Cayman backside, on the stunning.

I'm waiting for a 3.8L Cayman before I buy a Porsche. If Porsche won't put the 911 engine in the Cayman, then I just won't buy a Porsche at all.

me too... i was looking at boxster s and cayman s...but finally got a c2s cab its the big brother

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

You're making something you know, or at least ought to know, will never happen into a precondition before you'll buy a Porsche. In which case, you'll either never experience what a pleasure any Porsche is to drive and own (and you should be disappointed at this) or you're knowingly using this unrealistic precondition as a way to justify not buying a Porsche. No other rational explanation fits your stance. If the latter possibility applies, then...well...I'd better not say what I think of that position.

well i see about 3 to 5 911 a day, but maybe 1 Cayman (S)/Week, this has partly to do with more people trying to get a 911 because its so iconic, and partly because its the 1.Generation of cayman, while the 911 is its 5th (or whatever). so in a way its more exclusive.

    Exactly the same here

Owned boxster, then 996 and just bought cayman s.

I only bought the boxster in the first place because a 996 was out of my price range at the time and there was no boxster coupe.

Now I have been there and done that by owning the 911, I thought a cayman would be great - and it is.

My wife also did tell me that I had a window of oppurtunity to buy a two seater before we have kids - once they arrive then I will be in a carrera 's' or turbo...

I agree. I see 911s all the time.

Caymans ... very rare. I think we should keep it this way so their prices skyrocket at Barret-Jackson. Let all the 911 Iconists keep their dime a dozen 911s and encourage more ppl to buy them.

Meanwhile, 10 years from now we can sell At BJ!!!

Good point! Here in the San Francisco bay area I see maybe 3-5 997s a week and perhaps 1 Cayman.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

So far, Porsche sold around 21,000 997 in North America whilst they "only" sold 7,286 Cayman....

Therefore the 3 to 1 ratio seems about right...

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

    man, i'm good!
    lol!

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

I was going to buy entry level Cayman. I himmed and hawed. I slept on it. Thought about it. Walked around the dealership on Sundays looking at the cars. I always wanted a 911, so I bought the 911. It was $20k more, but I think that I would have personally regretted not buying a 911. I never drove the Cayman, and I have read marvelous things about it, but I just had to get the 911. It was bait and switch kind of thing for me.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

I agree with the comment from David SF.

I bought a well specced Cayman 2.7 this week. One of my main criteria (and one which never gets any airtime on here) was that you dont see many Cayman on the roads. There are so many Boxsters around I didn't even test drive one.

Not everyone is pre-occupied with bhp, torque (whatever that is), s or not s!!! Its just a great car that looks great and gets noticed more than a boxster.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

I drove the whole Porsche lineup (except Cayenne) and then narrowed my choices to Cayman S or C2S. In the end, had to go with my childhood dream car, C2S. The Cayman handles beautifully. I'd say it corners better than the C2S, but not as much fun. The Cayman felt like it always wants to be pushed, but sometimes I just want to relax when I'm driving. But as far as I'm concerned, there isn't a wrong choice. It's all about how much fun you have.

Welcome to the forum. Be nice to see some pics of your new Cayman.

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

There wa a good quote in the Ausralian Wheels Car of the Year

"By the time you can afford a Cayman you will not be able to get in or out of it"

    (They are >$160k here)

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

Cheers - I'll post some later this week - pick it up on Wednesday!!

Black with Black and s wheels!!

    David

Re: Were you going to buy a 911?

the price difference of a caymanS to the carrera is almost the same as the carrera comparing to the carreraS. so if i'm going to spend money on a porsche, i'll definitely choose the middle option which is the base carrera. it's a 911 afterall. As for performance, the difference between the CS:C2 and C2:C2S will be similar. so it's a no brainer for me to get the 911. it's the same insurance rate for all porsche also
