    Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

Recently received my dealers license and will be scouting the auctions. I will be in the market for a "2002 911 Cabriolet or a 2005 Boxster S. The reason for my dilema is that both used models come in close to the same price...give or take a few dollars. Does anyone have an opinion on which model and what to keep an eye out for in the way of problem areas? Love this site-Thanks

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

    boxster

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

    Got both a 986S and a 997S.

Boxster is more fun to drive. You solve "problems" by crushing the throttle on the 997S.

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

I posted this in reply to your other thread but this is a more appropriate board to post this thread on...

I would prefer the Boxster S anyday! The Boxster S was designed from scratch as a mid-engined roadster. It's perfect for that purpose. Top down driving in twisty roads is all about fun [the Miata/Mazda MX5 proved that you don't need big bhp to have fun]. The 911 coupe is the iconic shape and IMHO, it's roofline is utterly ruined when the top was sliced off to make the 'humpback' 911 cabriolet.

The 911 coupe is better for track use than a Boxster S due to, amongst other things, greater stiffness and more power.

The only disadvantages IMO with the Boxster S are 1) poor legroom for taller drivers (since the seats can't go back as far as they do in a 911) and 2) no rear seats.

    Just my view...

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

Boxster S all the way Decision is even easier as you compare a 987 S with a 996 cab
I only woud vote for the 996 cab if you're looking for a "mile eater" for the Highway - 996 cab is a more comfy Autobahn tool, 987 S is an agile go-kart in comparison

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

I responded to a similar question on another board. Here is a cut and paste of that post:

First off, drive both. When it comes to choosing I say select the car that "speaks" to you. As for me, I prefer the 987S. With my budget I could have purchased a lightly used 996. But while the 911 has more power, I prefer the chassis dynamics of the Boxster. I absolutely love my 987S and don't have any desire to switch to a 911, even to gain the extra power. That said would I like to see a little more go-go juice in the Boxster line, of course.
The other issue that comes up for some is the need for back seats. While I would hate to have to sit in them, the 911 does have rear seats. I know some need that flexibility. For me 2 seats are more than enough. The upside to only 2 seats is 2 trunks that hold quite a bit of gear.
Either way, you really can't go wrong. But really the best advice I can give is to buy the car you enjoy the most. After all it's your money.

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

I forgot to emphasize: my 986S has got nearly zero HP/Tq compared to my 997S.

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

    Hmm... 987 Boxster S!

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

I have not seen anyone mention the headlights in the 996 vs. the 987. The styling of the front end is much better on the 987. I would tend to always go newer unless I was looking at collecting cars. Go with the 987, better looks, better handling dynamics due to mid-engine, you will not be disappointed. I agree with Addict, drive both and see which one speaks to you.

I'm with you on this one. To me the 911 looks right as a coupe, but the cab 911 looks like an afterthought. The boxster looks right the way it is, but turn it into a coupe, cayman, or whatever you want to call it and looks like an afterthought. I agree that the boxster does need some more room in the cockpit for us taller drivers..

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

    BOXSTER BY FAR!

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

If you had 50% more in your pocket would you choose a Carrera Cab over the Boxster S for a given model year, or use the cash for something else? If the latter, choose the late model Boxster S, as it has presumably benefited by intervening technological and engineering experience, is balanced, is a work of art, and is a fantastic ride. For longer commutes the larger Carrera - being a GT-class sports car - might be more comfortable. That's how I rationalized my choice of a Boxster S over a Targa. Only time with the Boxster and how wisely I use the money will tell if that was the better choice. I'm looking forward to the experiment.

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

If I was in the market for a 911 I'd have the coupe without hesitation over the cabrio. It looks an afterthought and is nothing like as well integrated in the styling as the Boxster. That's because the iconic shape is a coupe. Similarly the bulbous roof of the Cayman doesn't look quite right, as the basic shape is designed as a convertible.

    .....not that I don't 100% agree

He never misses the chance to have a dig at the Cayman

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

I actually agree 100% on this issue with dreamcar from a purely styling perspective.

I hope you can appreciate that people can have an opinion different to yours which is sincerely held even though the implications of that opinion may be negative towards to the Cayman.

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

I think the Cayman looks better in dark colours (hides the bulbousness), whereas the Boxster looks better in light colours (highlights the roof).... to my eyes anyway!

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

Used to own a 986, now own a 997 Cab. Agree that the 986 with the roof up looks better than the 997 with the roof up, but I think they both look great with the roof down.

Yeah no problems with that, just wonder why it's even on mentioned on this thread. I think it's got more to do with Dream car's longstanding and well known vitriol for all things Cayman.

    Btw, I' don't own a Cayman

Re: Boxster S or 911 Cabriolet

Boxster definitely, 911 definitely in coupe form...

Welcome to the Boxster Board, toplad Don't tell me you've seen sense at last and traded your Cayman for a Boxster. You'll be having a sex change next...
