    Turbo Break-in Tips

While some here will certainly think....Not Again....

Picking up my car tomorrow. Its got 17 kms on it now. Will take it for a 500 km drive and will keep it below 4200 rpms while varying engine speeds throughout the trip. Upon completion of the trip i am intending to drive it aggressively and do some accelleration runs from standstill and redlining it etc...

    All comments welcome.............

    Re: Turbo Break-in Tips

first congratulations, the terracota interior looks great...in the for what its worth dept...trying to avoid any future warranty/resale issues i broke mine in by the book for 2k miles, 4200 rpm with a series of engaging blu road trips and almost zero around town slogging...im pleased with the results, car uses no oil , runs like a rocket, readily engaging the overboost function..glad i waited to discover the complete tt experience

    thanks roadtrip,

actually i heard so many different versions, thats its hard to decide what to do.
my previous 997 CS i broke in exactly doing the same drive and then kicking it. the car was a lot of joy for the 8000 kms i kept it and never had any problems. added about 4 litres of oil in that period.

my current cayenne turbo was driven fairly hard after 200 kms and again no problem whatsoever. no start up smoke or anything. its now at 4000 kms and running strong. added about 1.5 litres of oil so far.

should turbo engines be broken in differently from NA engines ?

    Re: Turbo Break-in Tips

I'm specing a 997 TT in May and thinking about 2 tone terracotta interior with either Meteor or Arctic Silver exterior. Can you tell me where to find the photos of your terracotta interior? Would love to see them!

    Re: Turbo Break-in Tips

The first 2-300 miles are significant. Supposedly the piston rings are seating. It is very impt to vary engine speeds (that's what _BMW_ advises in their breakin "procedures." No mention of this in Porsches "hints.")

Anyway in my 997S I shifted literally every five minutes to keep that engine speed all over the map (and under 4200). I don't think you can shift too much at the beginning (unless you're insane and doing it every ten seconds).

    FWIW. Good Luck and CONGRATULATIONS!!

    Re: Turbo Break-in Tips

Remember the black box in the Porsche. They can tell exactly how you have been driving the car for the first 2000 miles.

Interesting concept but doubtful it will work against any of us because the manual has no breakin "requirements," it only has only breakin "hints." Not much of a legal terminology that would compliment the legalese of the warrenty or the voiding of a warrenty.

I've seen it voided first hand. A guy with a new 997 carrera the Tranny(manual) went out with 1200 miles on it Porsche refused to warranty it because it had been abused and the guy bought his own tranny. Thanks to the Black Box.

There's an enormous gap between "abused" and "didn't follow break-in guidelines". 2k rpm overrevs and 5k rpm clutch-drops are abuse far above exceeding the break-in guidelines. I doubt that normal driving at 5k rpms would be considered abuse, even during the break in period.

The point is they know how the car is driven.End of story.

    Re: Turbo Break-in Tips

abs rubbish , you could drive it like it had been stolen in the UK and UK law would give you full warranty without question and Porsche have no grounds to stand on.

Turbo engines are Dyno run at redline to power check before install into the chassis ABUSER !! oil is then drained and replaced and engine fitted into the car.Remember Porsche are the Only Car Co in the world ( as far as i know and am told ) that gurantee there BHP figures as quoted on all turbo and GT3 engines , how can they do that because the engines have been on the Dyno and tested for full power ( 6000RPM + ) and to check emissions for the same , Rings only bed in for the first 1-2 hours of running as do the races after that if you have not got them bedded in they will not bed anymore the fine hone marks and ring coatings will be gone so you have what you have , on a Race spec engine if you do not get rings etc bedded in in the first 40 mins you are screwed and will never get peak performance

Agreed. Nobody likes a court case but I'd say there's _lots_ of room for interpreting the "hints."
