Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep Down?

    Here's a puzzle for ya:

I have this gravel road in my driving routine and over the summer it gets rather dusty.

Just wondering if keeping the spoiler down or manually putting it up would change the turbulance and result in more or less dust getting directed into the engine.

These are low speeds, but dust behaves in specific ways, e.g. you'll notice when you stop in dusty conditions you're overcome with the dust cloud.

I wonder if the spoiler would make some sort of "micro-turbulence" difference back there, in terms of the amount of dust sucked in, under these dusty low-speed conditions.

Re: Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep Down?

I wouldn't worry as you do have an air filter on the car that take care of these type of things.

Re: Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep D

What you're asking could in no way be answered quick and easy. That's not a puzzle! It's a Ph.D. thesis in itself in the field of the airdynamics (I guess) that should study the effects on the engine wear due to the dust particles circulation around the rear wind spoiler of a 997 at low speed. (lol)

    Good luck!

Looks like we need Dr. Phil!

Re: Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep D

Would nice to have the Mythbusters attach a camera to the car. Problem is the engine gets really dusty and that's no fun to see.

Re: Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep D

How many miles on that filter mate??

Get drunk and steal a paving machine in the wee hours of the morning....

Wow! Makes me wanna go check my filter -- I don't think I'll be able to sleep well until I do. Thanks!

Re: Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep D

Hey does checking your own filter void the warranty Just kidding....

Re: Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep D

umm.. that reminds me..have to clean the car!

Re: Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep D

You maybe are onto something. With the spoiler raised you have created a low pressure area back there beneath the spoiler and additional dust may be attracted in around the sides of said spoiler and entering the engine compartment. With the air intake from the top of the spoiler the air is generally cleaner than that attracted to the low pressure area,--I would say generally it is a 'wash' but you will be pulling in more dust into the top of the engine area,--but not necessarily into the intake and through the filter.

Yeah, DanL, excellent reasoning. To paraphrase, if the spoiler is down the airflow is clean and uniform over the air intake. The air intake would be taking clean air from over the top of the car.

If the spoiler is up, that airflow is messed up and might have a better chance of mixing with the dusty air before drawing it in.

BUT: What we say makes complete sense at, say, 40+mph; who knows what happens at 15-20 mph?

BTW the engine oil should be changed more frequently in dusty conditions, which means (to me) the airfilter isn't doing a 100 percent filtering job. Therefore the less dust drawn into the engine bay the better. Consider also that the alternator has zero protection.

    I recognise my airfilter.
At that point it had more or less 27K km.
Next time i'll change it at 20k km

Yay Beltar! I'll change the file name and put yours with it.

Re: Dusty Roads: Put Spoiler Manually Up or Keep D

As others have said, I imagine spoiler being up will create vacuum behind engine bay, BUT:

    a) when spoiler is up, engine intake is now higher taking it further from ground
    b) if you're only doing 20-30 I imagine difference in airflow likely to be small

So actually having spoiler up (air intakes further away from dust) may be best!

I like the Boss' suggestion best - steal a paver overnight.

    SoS.
