Dave and Gnil @ Nürburgring Nordschleife

Gnil and I booked ourselves onto the Destination Nürburgring 2-day event 'DN18' on Monday and Tuesday this week. What a great couple of days! Our friend Andy also came along with his Datsun GTR.  Only Bluelines was missing, and I'll admit we struggled a bit without his tutelage.

The weather was great, and the event well organised and run.  The organiser is a British company, and most cars were UK-registered, but also a lot of Swedes (Ring Runners once more..).

As Gnil wrote, some interesting things going on, like Nico Hülkenberg driving the Manthey RS around one one day, and Motor Trend filming a slot with a Porsche press 911 GTS and an M4.  I was surprised they could see out of the M4 past all the cameras and lights attached to the windscreen.

Some pics (mostly me - I'll let Gnil post the pics of his):

3.8 makes it up the hill, even without a turbo:

Me and Andy got a bit of a fright on one lap when I was chasing him around - we turned into the Eiskurve to find it covered in coolant and slid off onto the grass - narrowly missing the car which had dropped it.  The incident must have happened only a few seconds before as there were no flags out yet.  PSM and the GTR's stability control to the rescue and we got past fine.  It turned into a 5-car mess and closed the track for some time though - so others weren't as lucky. Makes me glad that a) I have it, and b) I don't turn it off.

Déjà-vu. This exact scenario happened to me a few years ago. Same corner, also went over grass because of coolant, or oil, no flags yet.

Glad you got away with only a fright too.

    Nice photos btw Smiley

At what RPM did you keep the engine?

Sounds like a great event. Was it solely free driving or accompanying tuition as at zscuderia Hanseat? How where the changes on your RS (maybe you commented already and I overlooked it)?

Re: Dave and Gnil @ Nürburgring Nordschleife

There's a bit of free tuition on a first come, first served basis as I remember. Have to get in early though. We just treated it as an open-pitlane day. Was way cheaper than e.g. Hanseat though (my motivation laugh). £1200 for a 2-day event with reasonable people is a bit of a bargain in my book.

    Driving in first Smiley

That open pit lane event, as David mentioned, is just free driving . That also implies more people do not know how to drive the Ring , so you get more '' amateur drivers '' then on Scuderia for example . But still ok , as it was well organized and they were also some very fast drivers .

The changes on the RS gave the car more downforce . The back wing was set to the maximum . I could definitely feel the car more planted at the back, specially on the fast parts . Not sure how much the diffusor form the R added to this ???    The mesh in the front wings was also taken off .

I already had a chassis set up , more camber and toe and the car lower  . It was  redone in a better way for the Ring and for the car . Set again a bit higher in the front . The car felt very good like this , very very well balanced but can't seriously compare to what I had , as I would of needed to drive the Ring before with the old setting to have a reliable  comparison .  As mentioned by Manthey , the 911 needs to be at the same hight front and back. Very important .

Didn't the driver of the Porsche hit the other car (Skoda?) when he braked and then started spinning?

The Huracan driver seems to have saved the situation pretty well.

Why the heck did he turn the steering wheel when he braked? Smiley

Also, they (incl. the Huracan driver) saw the pileup of cars in the front, they should have (both) slowed down much earlier.  Smiley

Of course it is always easy to judge from a video but in this case, I'm afraid the GT3 RS driver made a driving mistake.

Not so sure about that oil or the claim that some coolant(?) pipe burst (GT3 RS) but in the end, it was a horrible experience for everyone involved.

One reason I love (and recommend) organized track runs only, not those stupid tourist runs. Smiley

This is when he should have hit the brakes latest...he waited over a second longer and probably had his ESP turned off completely as well (the Huracan driver didn't...I bet on that...you can see it from his rear and how it moved).

Driver was too eager to follow the Performante... This wasn't a race, this was a tourist day on the Nordschleife. No need to drive with a knife between the teeth.

Oh well, I learned only from the best. Smiley

On a more serious note: You should be real tough with the dealer and Porsche on this one, this is unacceptable if they messed up things. Just imagine the kid with you in the car...

I had a stabilizer bar screw braking at 260 kph in an Autobahn curve...without ESP, I would probably be dead by now. Porsche 996 Carrera 4 Powerkit. Got rid of it as soon as the 996 Turbo came out, didn't trust this car anymore.

Of course, I'm just waiting info from the dealer in Belgium what the actual reason is before turning to my dealer in Switzerland. It's enough that on both occasions the car might have crashed because of the errors, now I'm unable to use the car until they've done their expertise, etc...

Bit out of place here but didn't find a suitable Nordschleife topic. Have a look at this guy's lap in a 306 GTI. Brilliant driving and proof you don't need a supercar to be quick and/or have fun.
