Porsche no longer ruling out diesel!!!

    Very interesting the next article:

GERMANY: Porsche no longer ruling out diesel
    19 March 2007 | Source: just-auto.com editorial team

Porsche's head of research, Wolfgang Dürheimer, has said that Porsche is not ruling diesel out completely.

Earlier this year he told Automobilwoche that Porsche would not consider offering a diesel engine as a means of complying with future CO2 emissions limits.

Back then, Dürheimer said that diesel is not an alternative for the company because in the segments in which Porsche competes CO2 emissions would still be well above the required level.

He was quoted by Automobilwoche as saying: "In general diesel cars emit much less CO2 than their gasoline counterparts - however the diesel engine emits more NOx and particulates so, on balance, its environmental impact is no better than that of a gasoline engine. This fact is often overlooked."

In his latest interview with Automobilwoche, Dürheimer did say that Porsche was not currently developing a diesel engine because it does not make sense to have the technology just for one market - namely for Europe. It would also be most suitable for just one Porsche model - namely the Cayenne.

However he would not rule diesel out completely and said that Porsche is keeping a close on the technology.

Dürheimer also commented on the pressure on vehicle manufacturers to produce more small cars as a means of reducing average CO2 emissions.

"If we produced a small car like the Smart we would become a different manufacturer - we would be compelled to be a higher volume manufacturer," he said.

Re: Porsche no longer ruling out diesel!!!

And talking about emissions here is another article from the same website:

Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking has hit back at accusations that his heavy luxury cars are 'climate killers' and suggested that, if the brand had to achieve an average of 130g/km of CO2 emissions, it would have to close its plants.

In a forthright interview with a German newspaper at the weekend he said those that those who portray Porsche as a 'climate killer' are looking for a prominent target.

He said that Porsche would soon launch a hybrid Cayenne and that this would bring petrol consumption down to less than nine litres per kilometre. To achieve 130g/km CO2 emissions, petrol consumption would need to be six litres per kilometre. Wiedeking added that the new Panamera, due to be launched in 2009, would also be available as a hybrid.

Referring to the 130g/km limit proposed by the European Commission, Wiedeking said that Porsche would never reach this level, and nor would other luxury manufacturers. He said that if the limit were mandatory for all brands and manufacturers, Porsche would have to close its doors. German manufacturers would then only be able to produce small cars, added Wiedeking.

Diesels are " cool " among younger drivers . Things like Audi's Q7 V12 TDI with 750 lb ft of torque gets ones attention. Read any car board /blog and it's the older drivers who associate diesels with belching ,wheezing MBZs and VWs from the 70s. . Hybrids appeal mainly to empty nester aging baby boomers atoning for being responsible for the proliferation 15 years ago of giant SUVs and Porsche knows it. Gotta keep reading the tea leaves to stay in this biz.

This seems like an overly cynical statement. None of the hybrid owners I know are aging empty nesters. But then I can't claim to know a statistically significant portion of the hybrid population.

Was this comment based on some research, or off the cuff flippancy?

Very interesting bit about a hybrid cayenne. First I have heard of it.

Re: Porsche no longer ruling out diesel!!!

It would be really cool if they did one. I just hope its a true Porsche design and not something from Audi that's been lightly modified.

Early adapters to the Prius ( 100% of my Palo Alto neighbors , it seems ) were greying baby boomers who dumped their SUVs once the kids graduated . Now that they all have their cars, Toyota has shifted marketing the car to 20-somethings with incentives and dorky short attention span ad campaigns :" Prius --YES ! "

Re: Porsche no longer ruling out diesel!!!

To develop and engine from scratch is more costly than to develop a car. Costs can run up to Euro 1.0bn.

For Porsche it wouldn't make any economical sense to develop a diesel engine from scratch for the Cayenne and sell only 20-25,000 units per year.

If they are to offer one, it will certainly be derived from an existing one. Audi is making great diesel engines so why trying to recreate the wheel?

Audi is licensing the use of MBZ's BlueTec on some of it's US bound diesels. Even auto juggernaut Toyota had to bite the bullet and buy a chunk of Isuzu to get acceess to the latter's diesel engine expertise.

Re: Porsche no longer ruling out diesel!!!

This is absolutely correct, Audi and VW are using MB's Bluetec technology.

So may be at some point Porsche will use it as well.

Re: Porsche no longer ruling out diesel!!!

Given time cars will be buring water by converting it from h20 to hho.

We can burn water.... so why using anything else.....
