    GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

The GT3 review in EXCELLENCE magazine brings up at least two issues for real-world street driving: 1) ground clearance and 2) wet roads.

    1) EXCELLENCE says that because of its low ride height and front spoiler the GT3 has trouble with driveways and one would assume with speedbumps too. For those of us who will drive the GT3 exclusively on the street, what are remedies for this? Can the front spoiler be removed? Is there an OEM or aftermarket skid plate that replace the front spoiler?

    2) EXCELLENCE says that the Cup tires on the GT3 make driving in the rain iffy. They say the car may have the tendency to hydroplane. Where I live it rains a lot. I will be driving frequently in rain--sometimes very heavy rain. Can different tires be ordered on the new car from the factory? If so, which should be specified for wet driving? Or do you think EXCELLENCE is overstating the problem the GT3 has on wet roads?

Thanks much. GT3 order on the way ....

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

I've got one that's only a few weeks old but I've had no trouble going over roung tracks or wet roads. Just slow it down when it's wet. The car is AWESOME.

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

Changing the tires could solve one of the problems but the ride height it's so hard to live with if your roads are not so good. Parking is a problem too. Just look at the people's face when hearing the scrath noises.

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

I think only having TC rather than PSM is a factor for when weather/road conditions are sub-optimal or if the driver has a tendency to over-estimate his/her driving ability...

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

The front spoiler is low, but it won't ground out in normal driving, only on speed humps or steep-ish inclines (check your drive!). It is made of flexible black plastic, you would not really notice minor scratches unless you bent down to look & it only costs Pounds60 here in the UK for a new one should you badly mark it.
As far as I am aware Porsche will only supply the car with the cup tyres, but there are now 4 types of N rated approved road tyres (or tires as you guys call them!) available when they need replacing. The cups are fine in the wet, but they only come with 5mm of tread so won't move as much water as a standard 8mm road tyre, hence the increased risk of aqua plaining. They only appear to last about 3-4000 miles per rear set & of course once they wear down a bit the wet weather performance gets worse!
I am running my cup tyres now & for the summer, but will replace them with an approved road tyre/tire ready for next winter!!

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

I think for real-world driving a C2S is a better choice than a GT3... for most people. With tires, semi-back seats, Bose sound, stability, better sound insulation, and not to mention the much flatter torque curve...
The GT3 is one sexy car in many ways, but it's certainly not for everyone.

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

My TT is low enough that it has issues in real world driving. I could not imagine any lower.

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

The GT3 is a lot lower than the normal 997 cars, as I have come to understand. PErformance Products offers a skid plate of ABS that you can bolt on to protect the bottom front. It is sacrificed instead of the nose piece. Check online at Rennlist (997) for "Skim Plate." I posted a couple of photos.

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

I'd be curious if lower lip removal would make sense? For every day type driving I doubt it makes any difference other than no scraping. It's not that easy to just take it off however. Every one I've seen has had the lower lip scraped up.

The car would look very funny with the front spoiler off. I drive the GT3 everyday and do run into issuses with ground clearance. But with anything, you learn how to best drive ur car. In addition, I bought two new spoilers and will replace the original once it starts to look really worn. It rained today. As long as your not doing 60-70 mph, I hadn't had a problem yet.

I couldn't find it. Would you mind giving a few more directions or a URL? Thanks. Sounds like a great idea.

I might have the opportunity to trade tires with a Turbo owner. Would his tires (tyres) work on the GT3 and be better in the rain?

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

I have a 997S with -20mm, I already have ground clearance issues WITHOUT the spoiler lip. I can imagine GT3 must be a challenge in certain places...

Re: GT3 Real-World Street Driving Issues

I heard from a 997gt3rs owner that the replacement of front spoiler lip is about $170 only, and its the only problem he's facing. painted lip spoiler will be a problem because you can't get away from scratches.
