    Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Hey everyone, I'm in the midst of determining the differences in the 997 and 997S, and have already covered the option bundles. However, 2 discreet areas are the brakes and the clutch. The brakes are a little larger on the 997S, but I'm unclear on the clutch - are they they the same, or are they different? Please advise, thanks.

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

I believe the "S" has the self-adjusted clutch

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

    That's correct.

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

What's the difference between the regular and self-adjusting clutch?

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

One adjusts its self and the other one doesnt...

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

    Any official reference for that?

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

I find it hard to believe that the 997, or for that matter any Porsche (Boxster, Cayman) do not have a self-adjusting clutch.
My guess is that this is one of those obvious features that sometimes get listed in spec sheets, and other times are omitted.
Has anyone seen "Adjust Clutch" as a service item on any service list, since the last century?

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Information found from different car-mag sources:

"Standard 911 Carrera models have a single-disc dry clutch while the 911 Carrera S gets a new self-adjusting clutch."

"On the 911 Carrera S, the gearbox is mated to a high-performance self-adjusting clutch. The result is a substantial reduction in the added release loads, which are normally encountered as the clutch begins to wear"

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Are you sure about that, Lukas? I had a chance to try both versions out at a recent tracking experience and I don't recall either one being different from the other. I can definitely say that the Turbo clutch requires less effort. I'll have to try again when I go back next month.

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Lukas is absolutely correct. It is in the product information guide (the one that's intended for dealers).

    Quote:
From the 2005 C2S Product Information Guide, page 29:
The clutch system in the two models is different.

    Quote:
From the 2005 C2S Product Information Guide, page 30:
    Clutch on the 911 Carrera:
The new 911 Carrera with 3.6 litre engine uses the familiar single-plate dry clutch with lead-free clutch lining.

Clutch on the 911 Carrera S:
The 911 Carrera S with 3.8 litre engine has been upgraded with a self-correcting X-Tend clutch. The X-Tend clutch constantly registers the decrease in pad thickness and compensates the difference in distance caused by pad wear by rotating an adjusting ring. This has the advantage of halving the growth in force that increases over the operating period until the limit for wear is reached in comparison with a conventional clutch.

I found the info using google so I can't be sure of course.. But several magazines and sources wrote the same thing. The clutch-feel maybe is the same, but the one on the 'S' last longer and feel like new after a lot of usage
There is for sure some technical difference, even though it is not noticable while driving.

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

So it sounds like a different, more sophisticated mechanism of adjustment.

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Spoke to porsche today and they said both 997-997s have the same clutch, both are hydraulic

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

No jamesdamanuk1. They do not have the same clutch. The 997S has a self-adjusting clutch with the "X-Tend" system. The standard 997 does not have this feature.

If you spoke to a dealer/salesperson or someone in PCGB (Reading) customer services, please note that they simply don't have a clue. They are not technical experts.

The information Lukas has found on google, and which The Groom has quoted, is from the 997 Product Information Guide which is written by Porsche AG in Stuttgart. This book is written to educate salespeople in dealerships who are selling the car. What it says is final. Sadly, very few salespeople actually seem to know its contents. In my experience, they give answers without checking the facts. When I was planning to buy my 997S, I read the books very carefully from cover to cover and found I usually knew far more about the car than the UK dealers who were trying to sell it to me!

I should add that the 911 sales brochure/book also states that the 997S has a self-adjusting clutch. Please see Page 67 (of the Edition: 05/06 Printed in Germany WVK 226 420 07 E/WW) which states that:-

"On the S and 4S models, the gearbox is mated to a high performance self-adjusting clutch. The result is a 50 % reduction in the added release loads which are normally encountered as the clutch begins to wear."

No offence intended to anyone but just a humble and polite request: to avoid unnecessary confusion for others, please be absolutely sure of the facts before you post

You were misinformed by your Porsche source .
easy rider911 is correct. The 997 S has a totally new designed self adjusting clutch .
The 997 has the old 996 type clutch
( hey, they do give us something for that extra $10k .Lol )

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

HaHa ok sorry guye, the guy at porsche said it so very "matter of fact" made me feel like abit of a twat LOL!

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Hey Easy, could you pls post this Product Information Guide or at least source the link where you got it from.

It's gonna be of much help to anyone here though it will definitely keep many disputes at low key.

    Thx

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Now I might be stupid but I thought that any hydraulic clutch is self adjusting as a result of the pressure in the hydraulic system. Nowhere has it been stated that the non-S clutch isnt self-adjusting, all I know from reading this thread is that the 997S clutch is new, and I assume better.
I cant say that the type of clutch would have influenced my choice of 997S over 997 in any way. Its not that important is it?

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

    Hi function_analysi,

Here is a rennteam page where you can download the 997 Product Information Guide:

    http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat...&PHPSESSID=

JohnHS, no offence mate but what you've written are just the speculations of a layman. Please read the Product Information Guide. It explains everything.

If cost is not an issue buy the 997S and be happy. This way you will never have to wonder what if. I bought a 997 Cab after looking at a 997S Coupe. To my type of driving there really wasn't any difference I could tell. But again this is based on my driving style. After owning a 997 for almost 2 years I have yet to think I should have bought a 997S. Really both are great cars.

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Easy, thanks for your response. However the link is actually broken because each time I click on it I get a msg reading "Not Found The requested URL /997C2S Product Info.pdf was not found on this server". Normally this appears when the doc has been removed from the storage disk.

I know you're probably going to thin I'm a pain for asking you this but could you pls post the file directly to me or just upload it in one of your next posts.

    Thx anyway

    Excellent! Very kind of you...

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Well, I've read the product information guide and it tells me nothing that hasnt already been posted in this thread as far as the clutch is concerned.

    Re: Carrera Clutch - 997 vs. 997S

Personally, I have driven at least 14 or 15 997's - base, S, 4's, cabs, and even Targa's. I prefer the feel of the regular clutch! Hate me but it just feels better to me!

In new cars, the difference is probably not very noticeable.

But for what it's worth ,
per the Porsche Technik manual, the benefits of the new clutch design for the 3.8 liter 997 S are :
    1. SUBSTANTIALLY prolonged service life
    2. The pedal pressure remains constant throughout the service life of the clutch .
