Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Saw a white 997TT today and the protective film (on the sides of the car in front of the rear wheels) was very obviously yellowed. Car is only 2-3 months old... any white 997 owners have the same issue?

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Supposedly the clear coated 3M films do not yellow, while the unclearcoated ones and certain other manufacturers will yellow.

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Think this was the standard (Porsche applied) film...

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Sounds like someone needs to take the car back to the dealer.

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

The factory film does look slightly yellow against a white body.. I had mine replaced by a 'one piece' Venture Shield film, covering the rocker panels and the area normally protected by the factory piece... It is virtually invisible.

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

On my white cab it looked yellow from factory I should get them replaced with another brand)

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

    Mine are slightly yellow too

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

same here, yellow from factory on arctic silver, switched to 3m aerospace after delivery.

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

mine got slightly yellow, but replaced them as the car-wash guy hit them with some serious pressure water jet and ruined one of the decals... but don't mind them getting slightly yellow... nothing wrong with a machine aging gracefully! :-)

The 3M clear coat on my white GT2 looked like new after 4 years.

It's the way to go, many other products are cheaper and more profitable for the installers.

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

I've seen this on new white caymans too. It comes from the factory looking like that. It could be the film, but it could also be the adhesive they use. Either way it's fugly as it is in stock form.

I noticed a white 997 today with yellowing film.

Let's try that Carrera S photo again:

Here is Sam's solution, on the GT3:

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

I have just ordered a GT3 in white. Would you advise against it?? How long does it take to "yellow" ? How did you go about putting on this Venture Shield Film that you mention?

    Thanks Lou

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Just make sure you're installing at least the thickness of stock otherwise there's no sense in changing them. Most people overlook this part. The thickness for the side's can be/ should be thicker than the pieces installed on the bumper because they don't have to deal w/ being bent around sharp coners like the edge of a body panel.

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Question: Can clearbra applications be removed? What's the procedure to remove it? A body shop told someone that removing it could peel off the paint...

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

3m on my 1 year old 997S is still clear, while factory film applied in front of rear wheels is starting to yellow.

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Anyone try the Crest White Strips?

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Replaced the standard(yellow)film on my GT silver car with the Ventura and added at side skirts. 1/2 year now and the Ventura has the same yellow tone as the original.

Are going to make Ventura replace them.

Same here, OEM film on rear quarters yellowing slightly but Detailing Dynamics installed 3M film still clear 22 months later. 3M still clear on my suv too now 38 months later.

There were a couple of guys here that posted they were installing Ventura because the installer told them 3M was yellower. Not trying to stir a hornets nest because I don't have any experience w/ the Ventura product, all I can say is the 3M wears extremely well. After all you are dealing w/ the mother of all film company's.

Re: Yellowing film on white 997 ?

Mine is yellowing on my white TT after 4 months.....of Florida "winter" sun.....not very UV resistent.

Put quotes around "supposedly" because I had 3M's Scotchcal film on my 01 Turbo and it started yellowing. I've heard they've made improvements and when/if the OEM film on my Club Coupe starts yellowing, I'll replace it with some of the newer film. White will definitely show the yellowing faster than darker colors. No doubt about it.

It removes, and should not lift paint. I "unwrapped" my 01 Turbo prior to returning it at the end of my lease. It's quite a job because I had a lot of coverage--hood, front bumper, rockers, trailing edges of fenders, and mirror backs. I did it on a very hot day, so that the film is pliable. What I did was lift an edge using my finger nails, and carefully pulling it off--once you get an edge started, it helps to use a plastic bondo/body filler smoothing trowel to help lift the film while pulling on the loose end with the other hand.

The bad part is if the adheasive doesn't completely lift off. That stuff is hard to get off the paint. I had to heavily douse a towel with Oil Flow Safety Solvent (a water soluable, paint friendly adhesive remover), lay it on the affected areas and leave it sit to loosen the glue so I could gently scrape it off using the bondo trowel. The whole ordeal took me the better part of a Saturday.
