    Is Porsche testing Diesel engines ??

    Just studied the German car register statistic (new cars, registered for the first time) and observed an oddity:
    in the column "miscellaneous" Porsches (others than 997/987/Cayenne-variants) the statistic shows exactly 1 Diesel car - could be either a typo/mistake or PAG must be testing a car with a Diesel engine (Cayenne ?)
    Note: the Kraftfahrtbundesamt (kba.de) just amended their statistics, now showing AWD and Diesel cars in separate columns, so maybe PAG wasn't aware of this and thought the Diesel car would just disappear in the "miscellaneous" column
    Also interesting to know, that almost 50% of all 997 variants sold in Germany are AWD.

    Very interesting indeed....

    Don't you think it can be an hybrid engine that has been classified under diesel by "mistake"?

    Otherwise, I'm pretty sure they test from time to time diesel engines just in case it would make economical sense to offer one.

    50% of 997 variants are AWD. So:

    C4 coupe
    C4S coupe
    C4 cab
    C4S cab
    T4
    T4S
    TT

    vs

    C2 coupe
    C2S coupe
    C2 cab
    C2S cab
    GT3
    GT3 RS

    Seems about right to me!

    Maybe the Panamera will have the V12 diesel.

    Wiedeking himself has repetitively denied, twice this very past 2006, the posibility of a diesel engine in any of the models. He states that diesel technology has its days counted in favor of hybrids, and that it doesn't fit the Porsche philosophy either.

    I think it's crazy for Porsche to rule out diesel engines. Go drive a BMW 335D then imagine what Porsche could do if they put their mind to it.

    Diesel is the way to go for the Cayenne. The fuel consumption on the Petrol V8's is pathetic.

    I believe Porsche will avoid diesel for the reasons Carlos mentioned. But honestly, a Cayenne with that 6L TT TDI that's going into the Q7 would be very appealing to me. If Porsche can build an SUV at all, it's not out of character (IMO) for them to build a disel SUV. I think a large displacement turbo diesel is much more psychologically agressive than ANY kind of hybrid, no matter what WW thinks.

    Even if they did use a Diesel, my bet is it would be an Audi engine. So whats the point?

    You have to wonder. Diesal is not a popular option in the US, which I believe is a major marketplace for Porsche. But then again more Americans are buying hybrids than anyone would have expected a few years ago. And Porsche sells a lot of cars besides the US.

    On the next generation of Cayenne, Porsche will offer an hybrid engine developped in cooperation with Audi and Volkswagen.

    Therefore there will be little need for a diesel version.

    Wolfgang Dürheimer said (according to the German newspaper Handelsblatt) that Porsche is considering to develop a V8 Diesel engine. He also said that Audi's V12 is not an option for the Cayenne, as the engine is too heavy, hence negatively affecting the Cayenne's superior handling. Dürheimer also said that the actual discussion about CO2 emissions is playing a role in PAG's considerations.

    If the Audi W12 is too big, why don't they fit the V8?

    AFAIK VW offers V6 and V10 Diesel engines, AUDI offers V6 and V12

    Seems I'm not up to date with all the Diesel engine variants
    Hope we don't need the Diesel specialists in the Sports Car Boards in the future
