    BMW are taking their F1 car to Nordschleife!

    Anyone want to try and guess the time???


    An F1.07 on the real Nurburgring...

    Nick Heidfeld will later this year become the first Formula One driver in more than three decades to power his Grand Prix machine around the legendary 'Nordschleife' circuit at the Nurburgring.

    For a BMW event, the German will tackle the famous 22km layout in late April.

    "This is our way of saying thank you to the fans for their support," said BMW Sauber Team Principal and BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen.

    BMW is a longstanding partner of the Nurburgring.


    Theissen added: "Nick's demonstration will not be about setting records, but a tribute to a unique race track."

    Not about setting a record my ass

    It's going to be interesting to see how many other F1 teams wants to pay a "tribute" to the Nurburgring if BMW sets a new record....

    For the record, the lap record is 6:11 set during qualifying for a 1000 km race at NBR by Stefan Bellof (in a Porsche 956 if I remember correctly). His fastest lap during the race was 6:25.

    Now this will be interesting!!!

    And your right Temm there is no way on earth they are not going to push for a record... Most car companies now use the ring in there testing and they all make sure we know how fast their car whent round...

    If BMW set a new record they can stick that all over their advertising...

    Will be interesting to see how a modern F1 puts up with the track though, not the smoothest thing out there is it!

    I think its great, I'm very very curious about the lap time, and setting up the car for the Nurburgring is going to be an imposible task due to the many turns, varying conditions and surfaces, ect.

    The problem is that the track has changed over these years, so older lap times are not comparable, in fact the record of Bellof was done the year they were remodeling the track and part of the track was bypassed due to reform so the 6:11 lap is not a full lap.

    I am honestly not sure what else BMW intends with this apart from offering a nice event. It would take a lot of time to adapt a F1 car to the Nordschleife topography. I do not expect BMW to have time and capacity to do so, in the middle of this years racing season.

    It will be a memorable thing anyway, something I had loved to see for such a long time already.

    You're right, but actually I'm not sure whether there has been a significant remodelling since the famous Bellof lap -at least the distance (20,8 km) has been exactly the same compared to today's NS Bellof has been the only driver ever who managed an average speed > 200 km/h Brings back some sad memories (I'll never forget his incredible race in Monaco, which caused the Commendatore to offer him a Ferrari cockpit). I'm sure he would have become one of the greatest champions ever if he'd survived that terrible accident in Spa
    Back on topic: it's a nice marketing event and not a sporty challenge - still nice to honour the Green Hell with a F1 car again

    Sub-6 minutes would be a great achievement. Especially with a 2.4L normally aspirated motor...

    I think the time will be much less that 5:35-50. Im guessing something around 4-4:30.

    A 5 min lap time would require an average speed of 250km/h thoughout the 20km course which is ridiculous IMO. Its so hard to guess but I would guess somewere near the 6 min mark

    the track is so bumpy and the road surface so different in various of its parts that it'll be really difficult to set up the suspension right...plus no prior testing data exist, I mean for a modern F1 car, so I'm not expecting that much...but I'm curious...I really am

    I think you are right, the set-up will be such a compromise that I would not expect a large drop in time.

    Here are the official records of the 20.8 km (not 22km) NBR:
    Formula 1:
    Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari)
    7:06.4 (192.8 km/h) in the GP of Germany 1975

    Sports car:
    Derek Bell / Stefan Bellof (Porsche 956)
    6:25.91 (194.33 km/h) in the 1000-km race 1983

    Motorcycles:
    Marco Lucchinelli (Suzuki 500 ccm)
    8:22.2 (163.6 km/h) beim in the GP of Germany 1980


    My guess is Heidfeld will clock in around 5.25 - 5.45.
    Unless the tarmac is too bumpy or filled with potholes, the F1 will stick to the road like velcro and have no problem averaging 200+ km/h.

    just a reminder guys...the Radical SR8 lapped the track at 6:55 back in 2005 I mean...technology has really advanced throughout these years and nowadays you can easily have a car that's faster than a 70's F1 car!!!
