    Trip to Swiss, Italy

At last the convenient time for this trip has come.

Although I've been there over four times in the last two years and countless others in my whole life, I now plan the most appropriate approach with the right woman and the right car; my wife and my newly acquired lapis blue C2S.

The route so far includes the northern part of Italy across the Swiss boarders, Simplon Pass, Montreux/Lausanne, possibly Geneve and then straight forward to Zurich. As for the return I'd see the A2 from Zurich to A9 Milan and A1 through A14 to Ancona.

I've allocated 4/5 days between April the 5 and the 9th.

What would you advise in terms of remarkable back roads, POI, hotels, restos and shopping?

Apart from your suggestions which are always valuable and welcomed most of all I'd be excited to meet you all guys living in those areas.

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

Don't bother with the Simplon, go through Nuefenen/Furka...

Unless you have something special to do in Geneva, if you are in Montreux, going to Geneva is opposite direction to your next stop (Zurich)
PM if you need more info.

They will still be closed in april..
So the only way is the Simplon, which is not as impressive but it still is a nice road. ( I do it about 5 times a year)

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

duh, sure of course still closed :-( crazy given there was hardly any snow this year.
I find the Simplon boring. Too many trucks. It's like a highway going up...

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

I agree with the trucks and the constant road work at the moment. But when there is no traffic that road is diabolically fast !!
The way down ( preferable up south to north , including all the bit in Italy is challenging, specially in Italy , as I take it like a ' rally road'
I do know it like the back of my pocket , having done it since I was a kid.. so , maybe, I just like it more because of that..
    Sorry to have gone OT

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

You're right. However, last time I took it was in December 05 with heavy snowfall, no clue of a rally road as the everyday drivers were standing aside trying desperately to dress their tyres with snowchains.

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

    function..
I know a few nice little back roads around Montreux/Lausanne and then in the direction of Zurich, but they would take you lots of time.
I don't know the time you counted in your trip between Montreux and Zurich ??
If you do have a GPS I could always give you the name of some villages you could programm in the GPS, which would take you on nice roads like this one :

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

or of the weather is better:

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

and the same road a bit further

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

going up the simplon, just after the Italien /swiss border

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

that's near the summit of the Simplon, you would be comming up

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

Ohhh, what a beauty Gnil Both your car and definitely the landscape!

You Swiss guys should be nominated good will ambassodors of your homeland. No best way for a country to have people invited from around the world.

I've seen some of those photos in one of your previous post but I always tend to explore their details each time I come across them.

As for the GPS coordinates/villages go ahead and send them at your conveniency. As I said to Jeannot this trip has neither a sort of a typical destination nor is being regulated by a firm itinerary, so I take no care of how much time will be spent on any of the legs.

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

do you have the second from last in a high resolution format??? I'd like to use it as my wallpaper

Sorry, I do not have the original anymore

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

I agree that the Simplon isn't that special. I think with the widening of all these roads much of the thrill is gone. Gnil can tell you which will be open and when,--and which will be more fun!

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

    Thanks guys for your input

I share with you that Simplon isn't as thrilling as other passes, yet it seems the shortest option en route from Ancona to Lake Le Man.

As for the itinerary I've got some valuable tips from Jeannot, hope I'll be able to have sth in place quite soon and then I'll call for your 'retouches' on the roadmap.

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

can you kindly post some of those tips, thanks.

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

hey guys ...me a lot of years ago ....before cayenne ...

I love the Simplonpass because many years ago I liked model trains ( Maerklin/Hag) and I collcted only swiss locos /trains . The Simplontunnel was the longest in Europe for a lot of years . I remember that you could put your car on the train and going from Chiavenna to Brig in 1/2 hour .

OT Gnil o U know the "diavolezza" downhill from Hospitio Bernina to Italy ? Immagine gong there on a car with summer tyres with -19 C and the street with ice ! Theese were my easter holidays many years ago !

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

    Shame on u Serginio -:))

    What r u doing up there w/o a Cayenne or at least a previous 911 C4 model?

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

    better Gt3 with sportcup !

    Re: Trip to Swiss, Italy

Sergini, a little question if u know, is it still available the service Chiavena-Brig by train. I would consider taking my 911 C2S on the train for just 1/2 hrs. Any idea how to book tickets, find itinerearies etc?

I know the place, but have not been there in years. That must have been realy scary ..and that's why you drive now so well on slippery tracks
