Navigation failure or is it just me?

Yesterday, while driving in the sticks, my navigation froze on a rural location, refusing to show the real location of the car. Ever since, if I use route guidance, it will give me directions by voice and on the small odometer display. The main screen shows only this frozen location, BUT the currently relevant directions will suddenly appear a few hundred meters before the necessary change of direction. Did I program this unusual feature by mistake yesterday, or do you think this is more like a system failure? How do I get it back to working "normal"?

Re: Navigation failure or is it just me?

Too simple, you'll be kicking yourself when you realise:

Hit the right wheel when in map mode and you'll notice a menu which has both Location and Destination listed. You should also notice that the dot is selected for Destination. Just click Location and it will show you your present position.

Didn't have time for the manual too eh?

I'm sure he isn't the only one who has done this.

Re: Navigation failure or is it just me?

Didn't go to the car to test your remedy yet, but I did suspect my wrong doing. Frankly, RTFM is always rule number one...
    Thanks!

Wow. You guys are good. Nice work in understanding the Nav system.

I gave up trying to figure it out because:

no need for it (familiar roads all the time)
not user friendly ("intuitive" isn't a big feature of it)
I'm too lazy (learn it; forget it from disuse; learn it again)

Nice to know it works for you guys.

Oh..., I use it in map mode for exploring roads I otherwise would have driven past.

Re: Navigation failure or is it just me?

Used my roadmate for 4 months because I didn't like the complexity of the Nav.
Now I finally have it down!

Re: Navigation failure or is it just me?

Actually, this happened to me one time and I had to do a hard reboot to get it corrected. I pulled the DVD out, pulled the fuse for hte PCM, waited awhile, then buttoned up everything again. After it went through 'wakeup' it finally corrected itself. It had nothing to to with what you (Popolou) suggested.

That was pretty extreme to correct a simple mistake. That is the way the Nav system works when it is showing destination. Don't blame me if the next version of the PCM is similar to the current system since I told Porsche I like the current system at the last focus group on it.

I've heard of problems like that but you really didnt have to go to all the trouble IIRC. If the unit seems to crash its likely because it happened at the same time the data is read from the (scratched) DVD.

When you swith the unit to Destination view it reads the data from the DVD to display that area of the map on-screen. It the DVD drive begins to skip or encounters too many read errors, it will not provide the data the PCM is requesting and therefore pause/crash.

The simple fix is to either power cycle the drive or pull the fuse to the PCM to eject the DVD. Works every time after a quick clean and blast of air in the slot.

Re: Navigation failure or is it just me?

I just bought a 2005 997S and find the NAV seems a bit 'flaky. The car was in Houston and transported to So Cal via a carrier. At first it still displayed the Houston area and then after removing/inserting the DVD it showed the correct location map. It's not showing the correct precise 'location' nor does the cursor move when location changes. The correct DVD screen is displayed per my phyical location but the cursor location is wrong. I also noticed in the 'Info Mode' that zero (0) satelites are found and no elevation. I tried everything but a reboot. Is the reboot process as simple as removing the NAV fuse?

    Thanks!

Re: Navigation failure or is it just me?

There are always going to be odd things going on inside that box. The other day mine insisted on telling me via voice to prepare to make a LEFT turn, while on the map it was clearly a right turn that I had to make. After I took the right turn it went back to normal. There are a lot of strange 0s and 1s going on in there...
