    C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

Recent article pitting R8 vs C4S. Didn't realize the car would be so expensive (100-120K) for the V-8. Performance numbers are equal/or not much faster than C4S. Nowhere near the GT3 numbers but for probaly the same price. The car does look impressive, and also comes with there clutchless transmission. In addition, noise cancelling B&O factory stereo with 465 watts. I heard that the V-10 will use the Gallardos engine and probaly be a premium over the base R8. I'm not too thrilled with the 4 wheel drive.

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

C&D pitted it against a 997S while Motor Trend pitted it against a 997 C4 Neither used the C4S which would have been a better comparison price wise

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

I don't see the point of comparing apples and oranges. They can both taste good, but so what?

Road and track this month does... and the 911 wins.

I'll have to check that out, thanks bud

It sort of compares the two. Road and Track compared a few performance stats (0 to 60, 60 to 0 braking, lateral acceleration, slalom speed) and general vehicle specs between the R8, C4S and Aston Martin V8 Vantage in a small table on the last page of the R8 article. The C4S was better in 0 to 60, 60 to 0 and slalom speed. Road and track hinted at testing the V10 R8 against a GT3. I just can't get past the two tone side panel on the R8. It looks wrong.

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

For the projected price of the R8, you'd be darn close to the price of admission for a 997 turbo. No comparison then, just a rude spanking!

You are so right with your words, Silver Bullet (well chosen)!
The "Porsche 911" is the oldest sportscar in the world, "there is no substitude"!

I like the design of the R8 as well, but when I see that the R8 with 400 hp is not much faster than a 911 4S with 355 hp or 380 hp. And beside all of this the R8 needs more "gas".

    Greetings

Ha! I think I screwed up.

I misinterpretted and thought that the Audi in question was the S8.

I actually think the R8 is worthy of comparison to the 997 . . .

If one were to search "911" plus the name of any car mag in the world, one would fine hundreds of camparisons of all kinds of cars to Porsche 911's. It is the "gold standard", and this really is the best form of flattery . . . That the 911 usually wins year after year is just the icing on the cake.

My 997S is now out of winter storage! Woohoo!

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

I saw in a different magazine, 977C2 VS. Audi and the 997C2 was faster all around

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

The 911 is the oldest sports car in the world??? Hmmm, I didn't know that the 911 dates back prior to 1953, which is where it would have to be to out-old the Corvette...

I'm also one who finds the R8's styling to be hot and cold. From certain angles, it's dynamite, from other angles, it's awful. And all those grilles up front. I haven't seen a more obnoxious over-use of ribbing since the Ferrari Testarossa. And the interior is a dated-looking snore, and so-on... It may be a swell performer, but... Who wants to be married to a homely and expensive wife just because she's decent in the sack??

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

lets see..imo the r8 is ugly and the c4s is classic

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

    I will say C4S with X51.

R8 may be a good car but it seems like it has some spot lights above the car.

Too many leds , lights bla bla.... It like a dowdy woman. Seems not natural

In both the comparisons with the 997S and the 997C4 the R8 came out on top brother. Those were the C&D and MotorTrend issues this month. Just got the new R&T and the C4S on the other hand does put out better numbers in certain categories.

What does this prove? That it was silly to compare the R8 to the 997S or base C4 in the first place (not even close to the price tag of the R8). All of the tests this month were unofficial quick tests by each of the magazines where they obviously scrambled to find a 911 to compare the R8 to. I love reading about the R8 but these "tests" were just filler before they do real comparos in future issues.

What you might find interesting is MotorTrend (which pitted R8 vs. C4) later stated that even though they used the C4, they looked up C4S times from an earlier issue and the R8 was still slightly better. HOWEVER, R&T (which pitted R8 vs. C4S) came up with results that showed the C4S with better numbers.

As soon as the mags get a US spec R8, and the proper time with the car, I bet we will see a true comparo

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

The real rival is the 997 turbo, the flagship of the range. I know it is more expensive but so are all Porsches compared to their rivals model by model. Buying an R8 on price alone (i.e. because it has a price advantage which is not huge anyway) is like spending Pounds1,000 to buy a suit from Marks & Spencer (is there M&S in the USA?) because you want to save money.

No Marks & Spencer here, but I think we all get what you're saying. I think there have been no comparos to the Turbo because it would blow it out of the water. Except on rare occasions, the mags almost always take the latest and greatest car and compare it to a lesser competitor to get people excited. Its not until much later do they actually roll the dice and compare it to something that might whip it.

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

M&S used to own Brooks Brothers in NYC...

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

    Bondmid003,

    Exactly! Well said.

Magazines have to sell magazines. Eventually the real scoop comes out, but that's usually a year or two later.

    Re: C&D Audi R8 vs 911C4S

I agree, the magazines thrive on creating drama, and there's NOTHING that sells magazines better, than a good rivalry. You wanna have an issue that jumps off the newsstands, and makes a ton of dough?? Plop a 911 and a Corvette on the cover, and watch 'em fly. Pony car rivalries, sports car rivalries, sport sedan rivalries, those are what make the car nuts salivate. For the past year, I've been watching all of the magazines BLATENTLY trying to construct a rivalry-out-of-thin-air between the 911 and R8. Myself? I don't see it sticking, the R8 is just a cheap competitor to Lambo and Ferrari and the now defunct Ford GT.

The magazines have forever attempted to create the rivalry drama, even if the manufacturers weren't even targeting the other car in question. Sometimes they stick, and many times they don't...

One thing's for certain, the rivalry comparison tests are NOT COMPELLING when one car blows the other into the weeds. That's why you don't see the R8 playing chase to the 997TT. It wouldn't be a good fight. It's like boxing matches. That's also why watching a standard 997 play with a Z06 would be a snore, as they are priced almost identical, but the fight would be a mis-match, as boxers don't score points for being best-dressed and highest-educated.

Anyhow, I find the R8 vs 911 articles about as mind-numbing as Corvette vs. Shelby GT500 Mustang. Apples/oranges.

I think they're trying to create a rival for the R8 since none exists. They don't want to lose advertising dollars with Audi by insinuating that the Gallardo is a rival and it wouldn't be any fun to watch the Z06, Ford GT or TT whip it. Maybe we can get some Viper vs R8 stuff going
