    Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

A friend found the last available 997 turbo with manual transmission and NO sport chrono. The dealer doesn't have anything else until August 2007.

Should my friend abort the sale and wait for a manual with sport chrono? Should he go ahead and get it without SC?

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

    Man that's so subjective...
I would get it sans SC but I do understand that when you are paying this much for a car you should absolutely get exactly what you want.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

    Deal breaker, definitely.

NO, NO, NO, did I say No??? For one, you're losing out on the opportunity for an additional 45 lb/ft of torque, not to mention that your future resale will be terrible.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

No sport chrono means no overboost. No way would I get a TT without it....

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

IMO the two must-have options for the 997tt with manual transmission are sport-chrono and axel differential lock. Even if you hate the very idea of sport chrono, the 997tt needs it for overboost.

Of course Sports Chrono at the turbo is a very easy way for Porsche earning some nice extra money, but OTOH you won't have that many chances to get a welcome extra power for such few money. So I would never order a tt without Sports Chrono.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

Not for me, I hate the wart and if the standard boost available with this car is not enough for you then you need to get an F18!!
It will be interesting to see the longevity or lack thereof, of engines utilizing this feature regularly.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

One final question: can SC be retrofitted without the wart?

    Thank you guys

So you are absolutely satisfied with the power of the 997tt and promise you will never upgrade to a more powerful car?

Also I think Porsche wouldn't offer an option, which will result in severe engine damage if used often.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

Sport chrono is USELESS if you place a modified ECU...

If I remember correctly, As far as the 997/S (non-turbo) is concerned, SC is NOT retrofittable. It's not impossible, rather Porsche just won't allow it.

As an option the wart must come with it BTW, but you can unsnap the wart, remove the bezel and hide the still-connected stopwatch in the dash.

If your buddy is a car guy he'd be crazy to get the TT without the SC.

It's like saying no to significantly more HP and Tq for almost zero money!

Leave that SC-less car for a guy who just wants a fancy car.

Sport chrono is not about overboost only, there are a lot of other benefits that come with it, like better throttle response and the suspension management.
Also, regarding tuning, the result in a non SC car will not be the same as in a SC car. the difference between sport mode on and off is felt to a greater degree.
i.e.: ecu tuned car with sport mode off, is faster than stock car with sport mode on. and ecu tuned car with sport mode on, is way faster than stock car with sport mode on.
My advise: wait for a SC car.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

It was a deal breaker for me. I rejected the first available turbo because it didn't have Sport Chrono.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

I wonder why Porsche make 997tt without SC !! it's a must for a stock car.

... because with SC as an option they can earn some extra money?!

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

    He should definitely wait

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

Big time deal breaker, plus he could even specs it as he wants. I would wait w/out any hesitation.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

Given your feedback my friend decided to wait another 6 months until he can secure a sport chrono.

Thank you for your invaluable support.

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

If you can get a good discount, I'd get it. I think the sc is just a money grabbing gimmick anyway. Of course I got it too!

    Re: Is sport-chrono a deal-breaker?

definitely the right decision, the sc really does add another dimension to things ...plus at sale time it wont be like selling a paper weight

Yeah, good question. Is it evidence of a tight-assed, overly controlling, wired-up marketing department? I mean how much hairsplitting do they think they can do to attract various types of buyers?

Do they figure a non-car-enthusiast won't care about SC boost (won't understand) and just wants the TT because it's best and "fanciest" car Porsche offers?
