C&D pitted it against a 997S while Motor Trend pitted it against a 997 C4 Neither used the C4S which would have been a better comparison price wise
Road and track this month does... and the 911 wins.

I don't see the point of comparing apples and oranges. They can both taste good, but so what?

You are so right with your words, Silver Bullet (well chosen)!
The "Porsche 911" is the oldest sportscar in the world, "there is no substitude"!
I like the design of the R8 as well, but when I see that the R8 with 400 hp is not much faster than a 911 4S with 355 hp or 380 hp. And beside all of this the R8 needs more "gas".
Greetings

The real rival is the 997 turbo, the flagship of the range. I know it is more expensive but so are all Porsches compared to their rivals model by model. Buying an R8 on price alone (i.e. because it has a price advantage which is not huge anyway) is like spending Pounds1,000 to buy a suit from Marks & Spencer (is there M&S in the USA?) because you want to save money.

I agree, the magazines thrive on creating drama, and there's NOTHING that sells magazines better, than a good rivalry. You wanna have an issue that jumps off the newsstands, and makes a ton of dough?? Plop a 911 and a Corvette on the cover, and watch 'em fly. Pony car rivalries, sports car rivalries, sport sedan rivalries, those are what make the car nuts salivate. For the past year, I've been watching all of the magazines BLATENTLY trying to construct a rivalry-out-of-thin-air between the 911 and R8. Myself? I don't see it sticking, the R8 is just a cheap competitor to Lambo and Ferrari and the now defunct Ford GT.
The magazines have forever attempted to create the rivalry drama, even if the manufacturers weren't even targeting the other car in question. Sometimes they stick, and many times they don't...
One thing's for certain, the rivalry comparison tests are NOT COMPELLING when one car blows the other into the weeds. That's why you don't see the R8 playing chase to the 997TT. It wouldn't be a good fight. It's like boxing matches. That's also why watching a standard 997 play with a Z06 would be a snore, as they are priced almost identical, but the fight would be a mis-match, as boxers don't score points for being best-dressed and highest-educated.
Anyhow, I find the R8 vs 911 articles about as mind-numbing as Corvette vs. Shelby GT500 Mustang. Apples/oranges.
