    Happy Birthday to Walter

    The "legend on wheels" turns 60 today
    Though I don't know him personally IMO he's one of the greatest champions of all times, not only because of his virtuosity behind the wheel but because he never changed his down to earth, straight on attitude - just like the nice guy from next door, not like a media product
    I wish him many many years to come (the start of his career as the chauffeur of a Bishop might have helped to connect him to a special Guardian Angel )

    Why is he one of the greatest drivers ever? Has he competed at higher racing levels or he is one because he is a Porsche factory driver? I know he was a rally driver and a good one but is that it?

    He gave some funny interviews to the German press due to his birthday.

    Walter is a slightly better drive than Nick , so he IS the greatest.
    BTW, on lazy sunny warm days , given a winding road with a commanding view of a sea or ocean in the background, I think Walter ( and I ) would much prefer driving that blue one he's sitting in .

    Nick, rally as far as I'm concerned IS a higher racing level. Once you see what some of these drivers are capable of, you really do gain an appreciation of their skill. Remember, at the time he competed, some of the cars had over 600 bhp - most of us wouldn't be able to handle that on a paved race track, let alone dirt roads with a rock face on one side and a 1000' cliff on the other.

    Good question, I never heard his name before seeing his highly unjustified elevated status on Rennteam.

    It's good though to see a man of his age still looking happy and healthy and still enjoy his driving.

    Walter Rörhl was named Rally Driver of the Millenium and All-Time Best Rally Driver by his peers. Niki Lauda calls him "the genius on wheels".

    His greatest achievement is undoubtedly his 2nd WRC title in 1982, in which he drove a hopelessly outpowered (270 HP vs 355 HP ) and outhandled (RWD vs AWD) Opel Ascona to victory over the fearsome Audi Quattro armada.
    And he almost did it again the following year, this time in an equally obsolete 2WD Lancia 037.


    I challenge anyone who doubts or minimizes Walter Röhrl's superior skills to win Le Mans in Nick's 430 or the WRC title in his Mini.

    Oh, and anyone who disagree the World Rally Championship is THE most demanding driving championship can return to watching NASCAR, thanks.

    He also had success in Trans Am and IMS GTO (part of the Camel GT series)........
