    Poll: Sunroof use & design

I suspect many people only use the sunroof's tilt function (/position) and use it as a vent rather than opening it up.

If that's true, then Porsche (or someone) should make a small 'vent' the performs the same function as 'tilt' and weighs 1/10 of the normal sunroof's weight.

Then we can have our cake & eat it too.

It could be a bad assumption, but let's find out?!

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

The only sunroof worth mentioning comes in a bundle with pointy rear windows for a mere $6k.

    Never

Prefer a Cab to something half-assed like a sunroof. Never used it once on my previous coupes.

    Re: Never

I love a sunroof. I would never drive a cab.

    Re: Never

I have a cabriolet now,--my first REAL cabriolet. I'm spoiled. But years ago you got better cockpit venting from the rear quarter windows,--since deleted for security and wind noise.

    Re: Never

I love the sunroof for the atmosphere and openness and not for ventilation.

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

In the U.S. we have no choice, you have to take the sunroof if you get the coupe. I had reservations about the sunroof based upon a 944 I rented in February of 1989. It was difficult to get it to close properly.

But the 911's sunroof is well-done. Frankly, I find it hard to believe that folks would spend a load extra for the Targa when they can get almost the same result from the basic sunroof and probably have a car with lower weight (the Targa probably weighs more given the need to strengthen the chassis because of more glass).

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

I appreciate sunroofs a lot, sure it's not as good as a convertible or the Targa but better than nothing.

What made me wonder was the fact that the sunroof in the 997 causes a lot of wind noise, esp. beyond 200 kph. Do others experience this as well?

Haven't been as distracted by the 996's sunroof - or was I going slower?

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

I don't notice much of a difference between the noise resulting from having the sunroof open and having a window open. I wouldn't have the sunroof or a window open if I were going over 80 mph as stray bits of paper and light items might get sucked out.

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

The Targa truly shines when the sun does not. It's not a matter of getting fresh air into the cabin. It's all about getting light into it.

And there, the coupé's sunroof does not come anywhere close.

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

Totally respect where you're coming from Groom. Some people want that 'open to the sky' feeling with lots of natural light coming in.

I personally love the cosy, dark feeling I get in a coupe. Makes it feel very intimate

Whatever floats your boat I guess

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

It's okay on the Carrera. Not great because I've gotten used to quiet ride. Above 40 mph it's very noisy; I always have to close it.

My BMWs seem alot more quiet with sunroof fully open, even at highway speeds.

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

    Good point!!

    Jim

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

The real issue is that all these roof start to rattle eventually. This never was a problem with the 'old' style sunroof which only retracted and did not 'tilt'. I had my 996 in several times to have the rattle fixed - once the dealer returned the car with two large dents in the roof (from the inside out) after an attempt to stop the rattle.

I do not use the tilt feature anymore as I now feel (incorrectly, I am certain) that the tilting causes the mechanism to come loose and start to rattle. I am starting to hear a faint rattle in my 997!

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

    Did I mention that I have a sunroof-less top?

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

I open the sunroof fully on my cab whenever the weather is nice. Just tilting it causes severe buffeting and damage to the car above 30mph.

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

I use my sunroof regularly. I wouldn't own a car without one.

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

I also wouldnt own a car without one.
The only thing I dont understand is, why Porsche dont make sunroofs with glass. First, the sunroof of porsche is outdated. Second, if it is made out of glass, you enjoy even when its closed, since this changes the whole atmosphere.
Anyway, I would never buy a closed Porsche. Cabrio is the way to go.

They already do. You even get a hatchback for the price of the option.

Re: Poll: Sunroof use & design

When I USED to have a sunroof coupe 911 years ago I particularly enjoyed the part where I'm tearing along at some incredible speed, and simultaneously closing the sunroof,--and it literally is sucking the air of the cockpit! It's nearly like going through an explosive decompression at altitude!

    +1

    Re: Never

Actually, I'd like a fixed glass roof in the hard top for the cab. Wouldn't add that much weight, and would really light up the interior throughout the colder weather.
