    987 2.7 problems

I have a 05 2.7 and only did 3000 miles, but when the car in the process of warming up, the engine/ exhaust will emit a shutter like noice for a few times when the temperature is between 60-70 and at about 2000 rpm. Anyone encounter this problem? Also there are some squeaking noice from the roof on bumpy road. I am not happy

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

its the oil pressure relief valve vibrating - a well known 'characteristic' and one that should be changed under warranty without issue - the part is less than Pounds2, takes about 30 minutes to complete at your OPC

The roof will creek and rattle with time. It's a cabriolet!

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

Thanks a lot, I will certainly tell OPC this should be the problem as they did not fix it last time and kept the car for two days!!

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

Even with only 3000 miles? Can OPC do something? Thanks

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

It never ceases to amaze me how knowledgeable the guys here on Rennteam are. What a great site

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

Is that on the 2.7 as well? I thought it was a 3.2 only thing...? Same valve?

As has been said, it's the oil pressure relief valve. Exactly 2,000 rpm, usually on trailing throttle. Has to do with engine temperature, not outside air temperature. Simple warranty fix.

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

To further embellish on the above points.

The "shutter" noise you are hearing is due to a design flaw in the oil control piston a.k.a pressure regulating valve. The valve is what opens and closes to control the oil pressure. When the engine is cold and a 0W-40 oil (probably a good majority of you) is used the oil would be at a 0 weight. Now as the engine warms up the oil changes its viscosity to a 40 weight. During this warm up the pressure regulator will control the oil pressure from exceeding the maximum threshold. The threshol dwould often be exceeded during this time with the inrease in RPM's. This applies to all engines produced since December 5, 2005 in models M96.25 61604763 and M96.26 62603668. Porsche will replace the control piston at any local dealer. The replacement control piston part # is 997 107 125 01.

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

Thanks for the explanation, you are so knowledgable.

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

What's interesting to me is that I have this exact noise and my dealership says that it's some "air-injection valve". They've refused to fix it. Considering I got my car in May of 2005, I guess they've got some basis for saying that this doesn't apply to my car but it happens in the EXACT rev range that people have described here, and only on falling revs.

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

    mine happens around 2800rpm... ~.~

    Eric,

Tell them the part # that has to be replaced...I believe this problem does have service bulletin out on it...I don't have it on me, but you may want to check Rennlist.

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

All the problems were fixed by OPC under warranty, they took 4 days to fix and I was given a Cayman S tip to drive

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

I think JuanCarlos may have meant new engines from Dec 5, 2004, or up to Dec 5, 2005. The problem was with new 987 Porsches that used the M96 engine until about May of 2005. Mine was an April 2005 build (so probably about the same as yours since I picked mine up in May at the factory) and still had the problem. I suspect my new replacement engine also has the problem, unfortunately my dealer has been unable to find the build date on the new engine and hasn't been able to reproduce the problem. I've been able to about 2-3 times on the new engine but it's not as consistent as it was with the original one.

    Re: 987 2.7 problems

Genki, on my first motor it happened around 2800-3100rpm so you're not alone. On the new one I've heard it at the more conventional 2200-2400rpm range.
