Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

I was wondering what you all think of the PCM option on the GT3.
Its $3070. Will I use it at the track to view track times, or am I kidding myself
to think I't will be useful for that? NAV?

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

    Track times? haha.

Have you ever been on the track?

Any proper sanctioning body requires third party timers to be installed. The PCM timer is pathetically inaccurate due to the interface.

The only thing it does is add weight. Then again, the "shift" in the market is probably why it has the sunroof anyway.

If you need NAV, get a Garmin Nuvi unit for about 1000$

But if you are still unsure, go for it... sigh.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

I would get it for the nav. Nice to have.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

You shouldn't. Not on a GT3 at least.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

I say get it. You never know when you might find it useful. I think that having a windshield mounted GPS is a bit "tacky."

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

You can play MP3 CDs if you get the PCM! And for the "cost" of 1 kg extra weight you get a nice interface with a full navigation system.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

    Resale value will require it.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

    Thanks for the opinions!
I have to finalize this soon.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

For a GT3 I would even try to delete the standard radio - you have the sweetest sound behind you. (I know it can't be done but I am making a point.)

As for NAV... if you own a GT3 you clearly have a keen sense of direction and anyway - you are in heaven while driving it - no further direction needed.

As for resale - it's going to be hard to pry the wheel out of my cold, dead hands!

    Lap timer? Don't bother.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

PCM itself does not itself does not give laptime capability, only in conjunction with the Chrono Pkg (Wart).
The interface for the timing function is not too user friendly, besides which when your on track, driving requires all of your concentration. I tried to make it work many times with my Carrera S, never being successful.

I got PCM in my GT3, for the Nav and I like the expanded Trip functions, since I do Road Trips and go to unfamilier places.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

it adds now weight, looks better then the CD interface and helps you get there. I am a happy user in mine...

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

    Once again
    Great comments
    Thanks

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

Purists are dying off these days eh?

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

No, the PCM with Nav is not "Excellent," therefore detracts from pride in ownership.

It looks odd and fugly with too many buttons that never get used. Visually speaking, the plain old radio and CD would be muuuuch preferred in _my_ car at least.

Nav is fun but there are _better_ and portable units out there that you can take from car to car.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

Personally, I would not get it, and if I were looking for a used GT3, I would look for one without it.

IMO, a real sportscar, which is what a GT3 is supposed to be, has no business having a TV screen in it and 50 buttons including ones for your cell phone.

I think it looks MUCH better without all that crap in it.

If you're after that dumb chrono option, then you don't know what a real track driving is all about. If you want to use your cell phone, and have a map to tell you where to go, and park assist, and a coffee maker, and a vibrator for your wife, then the GT3 is not the right car for you. PCM is, IMO, along those very lines.

While I'm at it, I'd just add that while the 996 interior materials were subpar, the more spartan (and less "Lexus") interior was definitely more to my liking for a 911.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

    definitely you should.

The 996 door handles were pure sex. If one ordered full leather all the exclusive leather/carbon stuff it was pretty good after all. In base boxster form it was indeed quite crap.

Full leather helps quite a bit.

To the original poster, have you driven compared a GT3/turbo?

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

agreed. doorhandles were nicest in the business

What Porsche option code is this? I may finally be able to get permission to buy the GT3.

Tell her she'll really loooove the heated seats. Tell her they ONLY come with the GT3.

P.S. Oh..., after getting her approval, try not to forget to order the heated seats.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

Have not compared the 2 cars. I own an F430 and have tracking experience.
I'ts not all about speed and power. The gt3 is the whole package. I own a 993 C4S also. What I like about the Ferrari is that its pure sports car fun.
I barely listen to the radio. I think I'll probably pass on the PCM.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

Contrary to what some might say, many aftermarket nav units, such as ones from garmin/etc are far superior to OEM options, with a proper wire job it can look pretty flush -

it won't be as good as OEM in terms of install, but porsche screwed us over with the MOST bus and the lack of option to integrate aftermarket head units.

the great thing is you can take it from car to car, and the functionality is amazing- you can upgrade every few months or years without tearing the car apart.

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

get it, and cut the aircon. That'll save weight

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

Works for me.. I love tracing the squiggly lines it draws!

Re: Should I order the PCM on my Gt3

..Of course, this is less expensive:
