AFAIK, yes they are.
The engine does have its own serial number which is separate from the chassis no. When I first got my 997S, I was curious to discover the engine no. The German vehicle document said nothing and the EU Certificate of Conformity merely mentioned the generic engine details: M97/01.
However, by chance, I stumbled across this information. A Porsche Technician at my local dealer connected the PIWIS terminal to my car, and lo and behold, the individual engine number came up on screen!
So, if you want to find out your engine number, that's one way to do it.
So, I would presume that a replaced engine would therefore be a traceable event since the replacement engine would come with its own serial number.

With today's throw-away products the association of a particular engine to a body aren't as big a deal any longer.

scud, since you haven't even taken delivery yet, surely the purchase isn't even complete yet. You may have paid for it and they may have done the paperwork to register it in your name already BUT you haven't yet taken delivery.
Quote:i left a deposit in 04 when i picked up my 996 GT3 . there are a few in my club already , so i'm not the first , but probably in the first 10 cars delivered in brisbane . the factory has given the go ahead to pull the motor . there is a one way valve leading from the sump to the motor , i have been told this is the issue . car should be good on tuesday unless other things spring up
