    Re: really?

"BMW's reputation in Germany is pretty good"

I think there are good products in BMW, but after the new 7 series which IMO was a design failure Dealer in US are giving out big discount on it. These mistake will cost BMW not only the money but image. At first I thought the Cayenne was ugly, but eventually it grew on me. But the new 7series is just plain Ugly no matter how many time I see the car.

We used to think BMW built attractive cars, but now seem like Mercedes doing a better job. But the quality of the Mercedes wasm't like it used to be either.

I assume the most sucessful model range is the 3series and the X series.

Re: The cayenne look more aggressive

the color I assume (steal gray) looks very good with the Cayenne Turbo.

Well, I just have to wait and see. I am quite happy with my X5 4.6... actually I am starting to love it.

Re: The cayenne look more aggressive

My favorite would be a met. black Cayenne with black painted wheel crests.

Regarding BMW: the new 7series is an interesting product but also a very controversial one. I agree. I'm a bit disappointed with the engines on the 7series. Look at facelifted new S-class...500 HP...WOW.

Yes, the 3series and the X5 sell very well over here.
But Mercedes got a lot of success with the new C-class ("little S-class") and I think that BMW should start thinking about the future...NOW.

I'm actually a Mercedes fan, even if I don't think that they can build sports cars. But Mercedes gives the customers what they desire and I highly appreciate it.
Customers wanted a high power SUV, they got it.
Customers wanted a high power SLK, they got it (no Boxster Turbo, shame on you Porsche ).
Customers wanted a Roadster with lots of power and a retractable steel roof, they got it.
Customers wanted more power on the E, S and CL...they got it. Mercedes listens to customers, Porsche listens too but seems to forget what they said pretty soon.

    Re: not to mention

AMG can customize the 'type' of engine you want.. which is of course not official.

two years ago, I know a guy who bought a EV12 from AMG, but look exactly like a E320 even come with a E320 badge. The only way you can see the difference is the lower ride height and slightly larger wheels. I wish I could find that picture.... :P

    AMG

AMG doesn't customize, unless you're willing to pay a few millions and build your own car with your own certification.
I know that the Sultan of Brunei got some cars this way but he paid BIG money.

You can do the same at Porsche BTW, no kidding.

Don't believe all those stories, William.
I personally know several people who claim they got a substantial power upgrade on their Porsche or Mercedes at the factory. A few months ago I met a guy with 500 HP on his Turbo and he claimed this was a special order car from Porsche Motorsport (which is pure BS because Porsche Motorsport doesn't have anything to do with the 996 Turbo).

Mercedes customers are not different: a guy at my Mercedes dealer claimed his S-class got tuned by Mercedes. It looked like a Brabus to me and I just asked my mechanic. He confirmed to me that they got the parts from Brabus and installed them at the dealership. And this is what this guy calls "Original Mercedes Tuning". Oh boy.
Same as a german company named AMG Kicherer did over here (until AMG wanted to sue them : they sold tuned AMG engines and other modified AMG stuff and claimed that it was AMG.

There are other examples too (a well known german Porsche Tuner too who's on Porsche's "black list") but I don't want to offend people too much.

    Re: King of Brunei

Actually the King of Brunei has many customized Porsche aslo, one of which was a clutchless 964 RS which I saw it with my own eyes, as far as I heard, Porsche agree to build cars for Sultan 'only' if he is willing to buy 3 exactly the same vehicle he requested. Porsche will not build one car but three, Why is that??
So the prime minister of Brunei was forced to keep one of the Clutchless 964 RS even though he doesn't drive sport cars.

    Re: King of Brunei

Well, I think the Sultan of Brunei doesn't have to care too much about money, right?

Although I heard a story last year that he started to reduce his car collection of several thousands of cars. I envy him for being able to buy any car on this world. Does somebody know where do I have to apply for a Sultan job?

    Do you really?

Do you really envy him RC?

I would think it could get pretty tedious having whatever you want whenever you want it. Where would be the excitement in unwrapping your gifts? Everything would become drab and boring. Nothing ever to look forward to.

Yes, I'm quite sure that I could be very happy with a simple collection of 100 cars and a few airplanes and a helicopter and ....

    S.

    Re: Do you really?

The only thing I wouldn't like about being that rich is the body guards, the fear, the beggars...etc.
I love to be on my own from time to time, just me, my wife and my little daughter. I couldn't imagine to be surrounded by body guards, servants and other strangers and I guess I should be happy for the "luxury" of being pretty anonymous.

And yes, I think 100 cars and two yachts would satisfy me completely.

    Re: Do you really?

I do I do, can apply too please

Re: What I concern the most,

well i suppose this guy thinks that 6 cylinders are maximum for engines anyway, IMHO the X5 is not subtle looking at all -- it's a very mighty, aggressive looking vehicle. in comparison the cayenne looks (at least on pictures) quite soft. but what BMW is planning engine-wise is an interesting question. with merc going ahead with very torquey supercharged- (AMG 55) or twinturbo-powered (V12) machines, i would bet that the next ML is gonna get at least one of these engines. and than BMW has react. in sports cars i love high-revs and pure engines without tricks like supercharging, but in a SUV, IMHO torque rules above all. quite exciting what the future is going to bring us, but for the meantime the 4.6is would be my SUV of choice as well.

    Re: i can't agree more

    with this comment...

"in sports cars i love high-revs and pure engines without tricks like supercharging"

for me, any cars I wish it is pure engine. Unfortunely car business have to deal with cost of production.... not many people who care about the advantage of N.A. engine.. I think Mercedes is heading toward BMW's marketing road. IMHO, Mercedes have much higher potential than BMW when it come to Enginerring..

    Re: i can't agree more

agreed! it's all about horsepower, torque and marketing on the client side and all about controlling on the company side. the beauty of a pure engine concept is not rewarded by most customers. what i like with BMW is that they keep the straight 6 and not build V6 engines like merc and all the others (merc's V6 and V8 actually base on the same engine concept and because of this, the V angle is not at all perfect for the V8, but the controlling dept. rules and the ordinary merc client is not intersted anyway ). what i like with BMW as well is the M3 CSL -- not because of the car, but because the topic leightweight got some media attention.
    cheers; zzboba
